Brother, everything that you have said in your video was right on the money! Hopefully those younger folks who are learning about percussion and how to solo will be able to take some vital information in regards to how to effectively construct a percussion solo and have enough maturity to know when to apply different techniques in their approach. We often lose sight of that concept due to our thirst to naturally want to emulate our modern percussion heroes who have honed their craft at developing ridiculous chops, speeds and agility. And even the virtuosos will most like say the same thing that you have stated in your video in reference to effectively approach constructing solos.
You know what, E? We all can find all kind of TH-cam video's showing the best, showing the fastest, the most everthing... so at a certain you might get num for seeing all those extreme performances and still you might be hungry and looking for that crazy one person that is able deliver an even more crazy performance.... With the above in mind i can say that your video give me a bit of goose bumbs as you showed that a clean play is also an art. You translated your expression in a colorfull and melodic fashion with the right amount of suspense. Respect..... and thx for putting so much quality in your work. Paz.
Eric! Wow, thank you for your insights, especially about tone and space. I am fairly new to your videos, and glad I found you. Having excepted that after starting to play congas at a later age (52, now 65), I will never be a monster soloist, it dawned on me that tone and phrasing had to be my main "weapons". This video clarified and gave a voice to what I felt. With your help, I let go of feeling inadequate of my shortcomings, and you have renewed my focus and dedication to this incredible art. Thank you so much!
Thank you for posting this! people are constantly trying to get me to just do a lot of tricks and not say anything with a solo, just making noise instead of saying something with it.
Right on, right on my brother! The best explanation on percussion soloing on YT yet. Love the philosophy behind it, how you described it, and took your time in breaking it down--very rich indeed. Yes, pay attention to who your audience is, best advice. Keep on my friend, love this channel.
Eric, thank you. What a great explanation of what a solo should be. I'm just moving into that arena and somehow I knew it was not just show boating skill, precision, speed. The story!! Man you gave me what I needed. Thank you again for all your help in 2018. Let's make 2019 a great year. Health and happiness. PS - loving those skins - very sweet.
Your solo explanation is money bro, especially in expressing your self and spacing out your notes. One thing Ruben Blades bongo player told me, you have to lock and groove.'' thanks again bro.''
Great video, Eric. This session really brought it home for me...just what i needed. For sometime i was lacking in the soloing area, but now, I think that all will finally fall in place for me. Your solo is exquisite, and your instructions is too. Hope you can have a follow-up of some kind. Look forward to it if you choose to do one. Thanks and god bless.
This video is a godsend! Literally today I was going to try and get in touch with you to request some help with solo-ing because in a couple of weeks I'm going to be at a Jazz festival where I'm probably gonna get the chance to solo. Keep up the great work and know that, as a person transitioning from the drum kit to the congas, its really helpful having someone like you break down not just the physical aspects to playing, but also the philosophy behind this music as well.
Woooooo! That's is some great knowledge. As a kit drummer originally. I would take the audience on a little journeys. Start out with like a home groove, then take them around the block., and then back home, then take them around the city, then back home etc. Thank you, and thanks for sharing your talent!
Tremendously helpful! You couldn't give us a better video for starting new year! Don't impress just express I remember it from a Raul Rekow's interview! Happy new year !
Mis más sinceras felicitaciones por tu trabajo, yo lo recomiendo mucho porque tienes una manera de enseńar muy especial , con énfasis en los detalles y paso a paso. The sonic signature of the new heads is finally revealed . A much warmer tone . The stock heads seem to project a bit better . It's hard to say which ones i prefer . I could live comfortably with either one . Many thanks . All the best for the new year .
Yea I personally loved both... I think the stock heads since they were thinner had more overtone (which I loved on the lower drums)... But we'll see once these really break in how they can get... Thanks bro!
Eric, excellently performed and like Domique Noel said below you right on the money Bro! The melodic tones to me is you telling the "story" within the context of the music/melody is been played to conveying it to the audience. Keep the great work Bro, this new year seems to just got HOT all of the sudden! SABOR!!!
