    I was stationed in Kodiak in the early 1980’s. I remember a Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen and the square where the bars, shops, and other stores were. Nothing much more than that. Thank you for showing Kodiak in its greatness. I also climbed Barometer Mountain and the end of the runway. Kodiak is truly a beautiful place..

      We will definitely take you up on that Hana! We used to be there quite a bit because we worked with the Head Start up on the hill. The summer is looking pretty booked for us, so we probably won't be making it down this year. Thanks again for the offer That is really sweet of you guys!

    I was Alaskan born and raised, but my dad got a new job, so now we move every couple of years. We can’t go back to Kodiak yet, but I’m defiantly going to go back! If anybody is thinking about moving to Kodiak, here are some pros, 1) There is only one stop light! It doesn’t even have you stop for long, 2) It’s a great community and you know everybody there, 3) there is a farmers market that you can get fresh goat milk ice cream (I suggest the Salted Caramel, it’s so salty and creamy!). There are a couple of Cons as well, 1) It gets cold, so if you don’t like the cold than this wouldn’t be the best choice for you (One time during summer we had a heatwave and it was in the 40-50’s, 2) There are bears, Big.Bears. If you don’t like bears and you are scared of them, do not move there!
    (And a plus, if you move there around the time of Summer you get Fourth of July cookies, (Snicker-doodle, chocolate chip, and so on) I hope this helped!

      Thanks for sharing all this KJ! Your are very blessed to have grown up in such a beautiful place. Sounds like your dad works with the Coast Guard huh? I bet it is tough moving around so often, but once you get older I'm guessing you may appreciate all the different places and people you were able to encounter. Again, thanks for sharing.

    "It even has a Walmart"
    "They have a Taco Bell"
    As someone who lives on this beautiful island im glad some of our greatest notability is these two places. PS. we also have Subway, McDonald's, and guess what a Safeway

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry Naomi. Didn't mean to offend you in any way. We found them as things of interest because you wouldn't typically picture franchise chains on such a beautiful remote island. It's like finding a Pizza hut in front of the Pyramids of Giza. As crazy as that sounds that is actually a real thing. Again sorry Naomi. We have always been so jealous of your beautiful community!

      Glad you had the opportunity to see the Emerald Island. Not a lot of folks get that opportunity unless they are from Alaska or are enlisted in the Coast Guard. Did you rent a car when you were there or did you do more of the hunting lodge/fishing experience?

    I spent 29 years of my life in Kodiak. Great in the summer (on days like the one shown at the beginning at Monashka Bay), but the rest of the year the weather is terrible most of the time, and even in the summer days like that are rare. This said, it's one of the most beautiful places in the U.S. and a fisherman's paradise. If you plan to spend a few days there, however, be prepared for cold, rain and fog, and have enough money to spend on a motel room if flights off the island are canceled even for two or three days in a row because of the weather. And be aware that the cost of living in Kodiak is from 40 to 50% higher than in most other places in the U.S.

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I am not sure if we mentioned it in this video or the other video about Kodiak. But this was an unusual nice week on the island. We are there quite a bit throughout the year and we can verify that it is rarely, if ever what folks would consider nice weather :)

    Hey guys, We are in the early stages of planning a trip to Kodiak and your video came up. It's great to find fellow Alaskan TH-camrs. We are taking a break from the road at our home in Seward, hit us up some time.

      That is so cool to see you guys on here! We actually watch your videos quite often. Kodiak is definitely one of our favorite destinations. you guys are going to love it and there's so much content to film. We've been down to Seward a few times this year and May is wearing down a bit with the driving. We will definitely get in contact with you. We would love to meet up with you in Seward sometime later in the summer or early fall. Will you guys still be around then?

      Of course you can share it on the Discover Kodiak page Pancho! Maybe we can meet up next summer in Kodiak for a photo journey around the island with you. May is really getting into the photo side of things. She has a Canon full frame camera that she has really fallen in love with.

      This summer or 2020 summer? I’ll be moving to LA by fall. Anyways, there are a lot of photographers here mostly Canon and Nikon shooters. I shoot with a Sony a7ii which is a full frame. I’ve posted 3 videos of Aurora time lapses but if you guys have Instagram. Add me, I’m always taking photos. :) IG: snappingwith_pancho

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We will definitely find you on Instagram. Sony is a little closer to our style of video centric cameras. We use a Panasonic GH5 for video and love the image stabilization.

    • @snappingwith_pancho
      @snappingwith_pancho 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I heard the GH5 had better image stabilization. I haven’t used my camera for any videos. I bought a gimbal back in March but haven’t used it. Anyways, yes add me and I’ll add you guys. I’m down to meet up with people for photos but my strengths is astrophotography. I made an event with the photo club to go photograph the Milky Way. It was amazing and got to see a huge shooting star. :)
