This song relates back to the relationship between NF and his parents. NF ended up living with his dad because his mom’s boyfriend would physically abuse him. In the end, she wound up dying of a drug overdose while he was in high school.
Remember on the song "why" one line he said was "let you down is the only song you have heard well then you're behind" its because it was on the radio and people only heard that one song of him

This song has 2 theories.
The first theory is the one that you guys thought in the beginning, that it is about him and his father.
But actually, this is his future self talking to his old self. He is sorry that he let himself down.
The "father figure" is Nate himself, looking at his old self drown/burn/die.
That's why in the end someone calls out Nathan and he looks back. That's probably his wife in the future. They also show his arm tattoo in the end. Confirming that it is actually Nate himself, only much older.
P.S. - And yeah that Child's voice in the Hook is NF himself, the producers made his voice high pitched for it.

This video is amazing, there are 2 theories to this video, NF in the past has claimed that he had a troubled relationship with his father as they were separated at a young age. But in this video the older man is Nathan at an later age or down the road in which he feels the need to apologize on letting his younger self filled with disappointment and paranoia making him feel as if he loses a part of himself (the casket).
Himself drowning seems to be a representation of his depression/the inability to escape and feeling helpless.
Himself In a burning car shows his anger and fury as he is trapped in a fiery blaze.
Nathan in a coffin shows a closed chapter the realization that he lost a part of himself that he will no longer get back.
A lot of people when they’re young feel like they are out of control and need help but the parents don’t know how to help because of fear of enabling, but to the person they feel like the parent is just watching them drown???
NF is singing to himself, disappointed of the things he's done, going back in time watching himself drown and burn in his doubts, and burdens. For everybody that is saying that NF is talking to his old self, I think your right, but I think that he is also talking to his dad because even though the music video shows that it’s Nate, the actual lyrics of the song still show that he’s talking to his dad
We need to complain to TH-cam about taking off those 4 videos that pop up at the end. They ruin the videos like here. Like you go on TH-cam to watch a whole video then they make you miss part of it.
