The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the largest charity that saves lives at sea around the coasts of the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man, as well as on some inland waterways. It is one of several lifeboat services operating in the same area.

1892 Punch cartoon celebrating the RNLI "on the occasion of Queen Victoria conveying her appreciation in saving the crew and passengers of the steamship Eider, 1892"
Founded in 1824 as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, soon afterwards becoming the Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, under the patronage of King George IV. On 5 October 1854, the institution’s name was changed to its current name (RNLI), and in 1860 was granted a royal charter.
The RNLI is a charity in the UK and in the Republic of Ireland and has enjoyed royal patronage since its foundation, the most recent being Queen Elizabeth II until her death on 8 September 2022. The RNLI is principally funded by legacies (65%) and donations (28%), with the remainder from merchandising and investment. Most of the members of its lifeboat crews are unpaid volunteers.
The RNLI is based in Poole, Dorset. It has 238 lifeboat stations and operates 444 lifeboats. RNLI lifeguards operate on more than 200 beaches: the lifeguards are paid by local authorities, but the RNLI provides equipment and training. The institution also operates flood rescue teams nationally and internationally, the latter prepared to travel to emergencies overseas at short notice.
Considerable effort is put into training and education by the institution, particularly for young people; in 2013, more than 6,000 children a week were spoken to by education volunteers about sea and beach safety, and over 800 children a week received training. Crews rescued on average 22 people a day in 2015. The institution has saved some 140,000 lives since its foundation, at a cost of more than 600 lives lost in service.

This is me in the video , I’m so thankful to everyone who was there to help the coastguards and to the people who called the coastguards. One minute I could touch the floor and the next I was being pulled back , I’m a generally good swimmer but I couldn’t swim back to shore, my only option was to swim with the same way as the currant but the only way to do that would be to go closer to the pier , my legs had gone dead due to being tired and cold. I was waving to the people on the pier to try and get their attention as I could see I was going out further and there was no flashing lights. I was out there for 25 minutes before I heard any sirens , my friend (in the video) tried to get 3 different people with their phones in their hands to call before anyone listened. I’m okay now , and home. I’m just very tired and shaken up from it all.

Happened to me once on Bondi beach. Didn't matter how hard a swam back to the shore, I got further and further away. A surfer came over to me and asked if I was alright, said i should pick a side, left or right and swim in that direction, and about 10 minutes later I was back on the beach. Lay down to recover where my towel was, looked up and there was a big bloody sign warning people of the currents right in front of me, doh! Glad you're OK.

@@user-ip4io3sz9m I'm an extremely good swimmer with well over 1000 hours however the sea and lakes are different. I am way too paranoid as I've seen the horror stories with cramp and tides. The best swimmer in the world could get into life and death trouble in the same circumstances. Stay safe, do not think you're invincible and do not start out with the expectation you will be saved if something were to go wrong.

It is a travesty that the RNLI (and Air Ambulance for that matter) have to rely on public donations. Any organisations that directly puts the safety and wellbeing of the UK public as their sole concern (like other "emergency services") should be funded from the public purse, especially when the lives are put at risk from saving others. It beggars belief that money from taxation is not channelled to such places. All Governments over the years are complicit in leaving these vital services off the payout list and I would prefer some of my taxes were earmarked for these organistaions rather than some other places I could mention (foreign aid for example).

As an ex cop in the 1970` when we were real cops (Glasgow, Scotland) those two tosser police in Blackpool need to change jobs and go stack shelves somewhere. Their job, " The preservation of life and protection of property" Probably had to go find a safe place after.

Usually i wouldn't say anything to the police about a mistake, or not knowing every little law when talking to youtubers etc. But im for emailing these clowns. Imagine the priority in all that, being gemder and pronouns

There wasn’t a single person there willing to swim out with a float? All those people could have gotten together and formed a human chain in about 5 minutes. I don’t get it. Wow.
