For the sake of music this better wins, because honestly it doesn't get better than this in Eurovision, probably not ever again. My number 1 this year and the 35 years before that. This is something, it makes me feel alive.
The guitar throw was definetly according to plan. Having seen them live a bunch of times, I can tell you that that throw is basically a signature move for him
He didn't throw the guitar in the air and lose control. He threw it around his body. As said earlier; a signature movement. Maybe you should watch the movie again...
I saw Gåte play live in Dødens dal ( Death valley in english) in a re-union concert after 10 000 people put their signature on a list to make them play again. When I saw this gig the guitarplayer would climb towers of speakers and things, and would be 10 meters above stage rocking out... I was seriously concerned for his safety. But I have learned later that this is just who he is, he does this all the time. So if someone think a simple guitar throw is out of control, just imagine how it is to watch him on a stack of 7 Marshalls with his eyes closed and headbanging. He has done this since 1999.
Oh, and the lyrics are an adaptation of a classic Nordic folktale, other bands have also done it (Garmarna did a song Vedegällningen which has the same story). The very short version is, there's a jealous evil stepmother that puts a curse on our heroine, which turns her into a wolf, and she can only be freed from the curse if she drinks the blood of her brother. I believe that's where this version of the song leaves the story. The long/album version of the song also has the happy ending, where the girl (in wolf form) attacks her stepmother and bites into her, and it turns out the stepmother is pregnant with the girls unborn brother, so the stepmothers blood is also her brothers blood and thus the curse is broken. Nice and bloody, like a proper 1000 year old folktale should be 😄
Actually, towards the end, you can hear in backing vocals (the screaming, creepy sounding ones) the lines about blood running loose after the wolf bites the stepmother. It's not easy to hear, but it's there. I think they just ran out of time to include it fully in the song. (The full song is almost 6 minutes long, so I don't blame them for having to cut it out. It must've been really hard figuring out what to keep and what to get rid of.)
This band have played together for 20 years. Gunnhild started to sing in the band when she was 14 years old. The lyrics his is based on a 1000 year old fairytale and the song is from a "kulokk" witch was used to bring in the cows. Look up Norwegian kulokk. These high notes are important because they should reach far away so the cows would hear the song. This is Norwegian culture, and we are very proud of it in Norway. It has nothing to do with global warming, but Norway is very consered about global warming. We do a lot to the climate changes in Norway. Just google and learn.
@MarkTBird what he says in the end is wrong, and that is why he should google and learn before he speaks about a country that he dont know much about. This is my country, and I will tell people if they are wrong.
This song is definitely growing on me, I definitely appreciate Norway sending it to Eurovision. I'd say it's in the top tier of songs we have atm. Also, worth noting that while MGP allows live autotune, Gåte were one of the bands that didn't use it, so that vocal will be just as great in May
I knew MGP allows autotune (which I hate in a song contest), but I didn't know she chose not to use it. That was the ONE concern I had about this song. Now I don't have to worry about it. Thank you for mentioning that.
It reminds me of everything, it reminds me of being alive ! This is really something ... I honestly believe Eurovision doesn't get any better than this.
No matter how many times I listen to the song (and it's been A LOT till now) - I always get goosebumps. This is why I love Eurovision. I get to know bands like Gate. Bands, that will stay on my playlist forever with all their music.
Gåte’s music is a dark, mesmerizing and stunningly beautiful take on Nordic folk. Where they flirt with elements from traditional Norse and pagan music as well as from more modern genres like rock and industrial. The chorus is a socalled KULOKK, - the maiden calling the cattle in from the the mountains. The roots of this song is a thousand years old.
I very much enjoyed your reaction. I have been a Gåte fan for years, no, decades. This song is not my favorite from them, but they bring that darkness that I yearn for. Bonus points to the woman that both knew the instrument and pronounced nyckelharpa correctly! Subscribed.

The corresponding shift to a bear is björnsärk (or berserk as you call it in english), more well known maybe. Wearing a ulveham will also make you a werewolf, which are not knewn to be very nice. Actually the song is based on a more than 1000 year old saga in old norse (can be described in very good and accurate detail in th-cam.com/video/THYYDiJczOM/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=EurovisionHistories ). That saga was picked up by the Grimm brother's which started the saga of Snowwhite which is an offspring of this saga, but far less bloody and more symbolic ....And! Rebekah, your pronounciation of nyckelharpa is far to good to not have nordic heritage
It's called a ring (bet that surprised you) and it isn't actually considered a diacritic, but part of the letter itself, which is considered different from the letter it appears over, usually an A or U (Å å Ů ů). It's used in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and the Belgian Romance language called Walloon.
This is easily the best song this year, fantastic vocalist. Obviously won't win though, because that's not how the competition works 😂 I've been listening to Gåte since their beginning essentially (early 2000's), and I love to see them in the competition... especially since unlike so many others, they've really compromised on nothing to be there. This is exactly their style and sound, there's nothing gimmicky about it. So many "folk influenced" artists in Eurovision do it in a very superficial way, but with Gåte the influences go all the way to the core. I also love that this is "just" a track from their new album ("Vandrar", it's good, go listen to it), it's probably not made with Eurovision in mind.
This is my favourite so far this year, and I definitely prefer it to the entry last year which felt overhyped to me. I'm not sure if it can win, but I would like it to be a contender anyway. Much more interesting rock than Maneskin. Ukraine of course won with a hard hitting folk style around a decade ago or so, but that also had politics involved.
Not gonna win Eurovision i think, but this is top 10 material. This feels so Norway though.. Now that all the songs are out, Its still one of my favorites this year.
In Norwegian we have three extra letters in our alphabet: Æ, Ø and Å. So you see the å in "Gåte" which means riddle and the title "Ulveham" means wolfs skin
The song is based on a thousand years old Norwegian tale. No global warming as it was much warmer a thousand years ago. Gåte plays folk music that are a few hundred years old. This is new though. Ulveham means wolf clothes or wolf disguise. -Or something like that. That instrument is NØKKELHARPE - KEY HARP,, -an old folk string instrument used in Norway and Sweden.
@@zarolikse2372 Kind of, but likewise "Enigma" is more arbitrary than "Gåte" "Gåte" is in between "riddle" and "enigma", if we look at meaningful usage Just as "mysterie" is slightly more "enigmatic" than the English "mystery". I hope that makes sense. It's subject to my perception, obviously, although I've become quite an adult, I have OCPD, and I think in both English and Norwegian etc.
Nice reaction👍 I love this song and performance🤩 It’s an approximately 1000 year old folklore. The diacritic mark isn't really a diacritic mark. lol There's a letter a in Norwegian & also å. Å comes at the very end of the alphabet in Norwegian: it goes a-z like English, then æ, ø & finally å. The circle is known as a ring or bolle, & it is derived from Old Norse, & is pronounced like a long o, such as the word or (ɔrː]). It's common in most North Germanic languages, with the exception of Icelandic & Faroese. We saw å back in Eurovision in 2021, when Måneskin won. Their bass player, Victoria De Angelis, has a Danish mother & Italian father, so they used a Danish word as their band name. Måneskin means moonlight in Danish.
fun fact, å is not a diacritic, it's a separate character. ÆØÅ are amalgamations of other characters. å is a double a, ø is oe, æ is, unsurprisingly ae.
The instrument is pronounced *Nøkkelharpe* in Norwegian (Ø is pronounced uh) or *Nyckelharpa* in Swedish but since it's the Swedish national instrument I'll give you a pass, despite it being inconclusive whether it's of Norwegian or Swedish origin. Always good to see you again every year, you have such a reflected vibe to your reactions.
you wonder about the dott ower the A, In norway we have 3 more letters then you,it is Æ.Ø AND Å...And yes we use them a lot..You says to drive,we says kjøre,you say teacher and we say lærer, and it is not gat, gate it is gåte..And they sing in old norwegian, loike vikings
I should like this a lot more than I currently do because it really ticks a lot of boxes for me. I don’t dislike it but I just can’t seem to find any excitement for it for some reason. Maybe there’s just a tad too much rock in this particular mix for me? Not sure. Perhaps it will all have come together for me by the time of the actual contest though, it’s possible. We will see.
You may like the original version better (it is 6 minutes long), they had to shorten the song for this competition (they did not make the song to this competition). You can find the full version on TH-cam.
@@zarolikse2372 I have not heard that version yet and also I have not heard it all that many times at this point to be honest… I am kind of trying to not get tired of the chosen songs before they are all out, so I can better appreciate them at the contest. It was actually the televoting that made it win the Norwegian final, which also surprised me. And yeah who understands teh Italy hype every single year? Not me that's for sure...

I found this one kind of frustrating. It's beautiful and atmospheric, but I struggled to find a distinct melody. So although the band seems super talented, I didn't love the actual song.
It's hard for me to get hooked on this proposal because it doesn't have a melody that catches you from the beginning, it's like a succession of screams, very well done, yes, and a lot of noise. Still, I think it's among the best so far.
The screams, which are actually a singing technique, are based on the very old singing tradition of luring cows, which can be found in different variations in many countries. Since the sound has to travel a long way, you have to make a lot of noise in a high pitch. There are even words in the lure, although you have to know the lore to recognize them. At the very beginning of the song, you can hear a 70-year-old recording of a Norwegian woman luring. The recording is the inspiration for the chorus.
@@ahkkariq7406 Is that sound you hear at the beginning of the song really human? 😯 I even thought it could be some synth effect or something like that, I love it!! Eh, what is Tyler's @s because he's is a huge piece of prime cut beef that I need more of in my life.
It is not about global warming 😂
You know you've got good taste in music when the song you like scores low in the clown fest that is eurovision.
This song gets most of the jury votes but it won't win because the televoting favours Italy.
It was actually the televoting that made it win the Norwegian final, which also surprised me. And yeah who understands teh Italy hype every single year? Not me that's for sure...
If Norway gets more points than Italy in the final, I will drink one of the worst cocktail ever created, which is called Bullfrog.😤 Otherwise I have Paper Plane in my Nick@Nora glass.🥳@@ThaGamingMisfit
å, is a letter in the alpabeth.
I found this one kind of frustrating. It's beautiful and atmospheric, but I struggled to find a distinct melody. So although the band seems super talented, I didn't love the actual song.
Guys, I really don't think Deadpool is saving the MCU. If anything the what will save the MCU is the pivot to more character driven narratives.
😉
⭐ This one understood the assignment
It's not an A with an added umlat or something. Its a completely different letter åÅ
Globwar wanring? is that you'd like to critic our song about?
Everything you tell me is very interesting. That reminded me of the Canary Island of La Gomera, in which a kind of whistled language was used to communicate between the mountains. Norway has become one of my favorite Eurovision countries since "A Monster like me". 🙂 🙏🏻
@@katodyka3153 So nice to hear that you like Norway's contribution to Eurovision.
Yes, it is human. It is interesting with such old traditions, and great fun that artists bring them into our own time.
I don't know if Gåte has done anything with the sound on the old recording, but here you can hear the original. You can even hear cows mooing when they hear the call. th-cam.com/video/O16BTgVmuOI/w-d-xo.html
@@katodyka3153 The sound in the beginning is a 70 year old recording of the voice of a herder, they each had their own unique style or melody. That's the sound Gunhild took inspiration from.
Is the guy very nervous or something?
Sorry it just threw me off.
Constant interrupting, laughing at everything, tight body language, drinking alcohol.
Edit: Sorry in advance. I don't know the guy and I also have OCPD. So I may misinterpret.
You dont in (un)derstand european languages
Gåte means riddle!
Great video, but Norway not affected by global warming ??? Wake up
It's a like not love for me. I'm a rock lady at heart and I'm sure it will do well it just well didn't have the E-factor for me.
You should do at least 5 minutes of research about the songs/ bands before you start listening so that you know the context
Youre all funny - so climate british, but what could I expect......hehehehe so funny hehheehhe, maybe next time use some energy on the tradition here - hva er det med ehhenes sminke, hvorfor synger hun ikke bedre??????
Jizez. Kan det BLI verre?? Vet ikke hva som er verst..låta eller vokalisten.
3 minutes of increasingly annoying banshee wailing.
Not for me.
Thank goodness, I was starting to think I was the only one who felt that way! 😂
Who are you people, robots or just trolls?
@@ThaGamingMisfit neither. Eurovision fans with opinions of one entry that you obviously disagree with. Having a different opinion from you does not making someone a robot or a troll.
@@ThaGamingMisfit No. Just someone who gives their opinion of each song as these folks review them. (Is that allowed by you?)
Mh no boring, repetitive.
Nice voice but not more.
Sorry sir but if you call this repetitive, what about 90% of the rest of Eurovision? I know music is different for all of us, but someone calling this boring is just being a troll or is literally a robot that can not experience feelings.
@@ThaGamingMisfit I currently think the only good song Is the italian one 🤷🏼🤷🏼
This year os not the worst One...but...flat.
Nice songs but...top common ones.
I'm all for sending a traditional song but I didn't like this at all. I would prefer Keiino or even the other song with the robot to win the Norwegian final
I literally can not understand people liking generic pop above a musical masterpiece. I guess this is why good music never wins Eurovision, because of all the 15 year olds listening to diggidam style music on repeat 24/7 until every brains cell turned numb. I know music is taste, but not sending this song to Eurovision would have been the biggest crime in Eurovision history.
The most overhyped song of the year.
No,
The most exaggerated comment of the year.
It's not even hyped. It's liked, but not hyped.
*Ukraine
It's the biggest masterpiece ever sent to Eurovision. I literally believe people like you do not have any feelings or are just trolling. Either way I rather not meet you IRL.
If you ever come to Sweden I would gladly offer you all a GT 🍸. Hm… I might have to clarify that this offer does not include all the viewers out there 🫣😂
GROUP MEETUP IN SWEDEN! COCKTAILS FOR EVERYONE!!
Oh, no… what have I done! 🤯🤣
No one threw the guitar up in the air. He spinned it around his body and catched it. You should take a look at it again.
