    I grew up going to Zion. The correct pronumciation is "Zi-un". If you want to impress locals don't say "Zi-on". Sorry, us in Utah have that pet peeve.
    Zions was what I grew up with. It is my favorite Utah national park now because it is accessible for us seniors, especially in the winter with no buses. And it makes a great day trip. I agree that it is magical.

    • @theparkjunkie
      @theparkjunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, most of the “old school Mormon” locals call it “Zions”…
      I’ve never understood this… but, I’m not always “in the loop”… 🤷‍♂️

    • @virginiaallen4723

      I call it by the park service name Zion National Park. The historical usage was because one church leader said "it is not Zion," in the Biblical sense It is just heaven to me. Someone recently drowned in the Narrows so your cautions are needed.

    Oh, another comment that I wanted to make: Although I'm very jealous and impressed that you've done The Narrows 10 times, I met an 81 year-old hiker on the Angels Landing trail who had made it to the top 47 times! His name was Battista Locatelli, the original owner of Batista's Hole In The Wall in Vegas. From what I understand he eventually racked up 70 climbs to the summit. One of the most interesting people I've ever met.

    • @theparkjunkie
      @theparkjunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, I know that Guy! He was always hiking that thing. I worked as a bartender in Springdale for years & he was a regular at the Spotted Dog, which was my home during those years. Cool that you met that guy! He would jump up & start singing in the dining room while he was dining… Helluva voice on that guy! Hope he’s still out there!

      The Narrows are really cool, no doubt! In fact, there are slot canyons all over Zion, & southern Utah that are just as fascinating, but most are not quite as big. Many of these canyons empty into the Narrows too. Simply amazing terrain! Thanks for joining us!

    • @theparkjunkie
      @theparkjunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No doubt! The thing about Zion is, you can only access an extremely small section of the park with ease... most of it is pretty much off limits to all but the most abled of explorers. That said, the easily accessible area of Zion Canyon is quite simply incredible! Thanks for your thoughts...

  • @Yawndave
    @Yawndave 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thanks for the top-down Narrows virtual experience!. Wow, it must have been neat to have that part of Zion all to yourself that day. I've only done the "bottom up" section up to Orderville Canyon. I have done Paria Canyon and Buckskin Gulch and I'd love to thru-hike The Narrows someday.

    • @theparkjunkie
      @theparkjunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s worth the effort! I think it’s the coolest hike around these parts, & the top down route assures that you won’t see any crowds till late in the hike. I rarely see anyone upstream of the camps. Paria & Buckskin are cool too! I’ve never been in Buck yet, but it’s on the list. Long hike there… 😳

      Yeah man, there is actually no end to the wild adventure possible in this park. If you get into canyoneering with ropes, there are unknown worlds that human kind had never entered prior to the 1980s… Massive slot canyons that are all the themselves! So cool!

    Great video! Almost didn't watch it as I've seen several videos about Zion Narrows - so glad I did because it was such a different perspective. • @jrsidebo
      @jrsidebo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@theparkjunkie It's part of the Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina. Most of it is in Burke County, but some in Avery as well. There's a big waterfall at the beginning - Linville Falls, and an impressive rock wall at the end - Shortoff. There's a gravel road, the Kistler highway, which runs along beside it, but it can get impassible at times. Definitely not a highway! Lots of trails. Some beautiful overlooks like Sitting Bear, Hawksbill, Table Rock, and Wiseman's View. That's where you can look for the Brown Mountain Lights - mysterious lights that have been seen for over 100 years that no one can explain. You can get into some rugged terrain or just walk along the sidewalk to see the falls.

      Well, January is a great time to visit. There are very few visitors in the canyon, which is a welcome scene following the crush of summer. The shuttles cease operations in Nov, although I believe they resume for a week or two around the holidays. So, aside from that time, you can drive up into Zion Canyon, which is cool!
      You won’t be hiking the Narrows in Jan, unless you’re a superhuman. It’s cold… 🥶
      That said, it could snow at that point, but if it does, consider yourselves lucky! There a few sights more amazing than Zion’s red cliffs covered by a blanket of white!
      If that happens, take a trip up to Bryce Canyon NP, because it is one of those few sights whose beauty may surpass Zion in such winter conditions… Enjoy!

I was afraid the water would be waaaay too cold, but the photos that are in that canyon are calling me. We will have to plan a summer trip. I really like the top-down approach, makes for an even more immersive experience.

      @theparkjunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the original name was Mukuntaweap National Monument, in 1909.
      The name was a term used by the Paiute Indians which meant something to the effect of “straight canyon”.
      However, once the move came to popularize it & make it a national park, local Mormon politicians lobbied to call it Zion, which it became a year or so prior to being named a National Park in 1919.

      I cannot recall the exact times, but I generally complete this hike in sub 12 hours at full gait. Everyone hikes at their own pace, the rocks are slippery & many people will move at a snail’s pace in this type of terrain, so judge accordingly. This is an extremely remote area, so don’t overestimate your or your crew’s ability. It may be worth checking your pace in the narrows on a dayhike from the bottom prior to jumping in the deep end. Have fun!

    • @theparkjunkie
      @theparkjunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are not boots, but La Sportiva Trail Runners. Comfy, with a thick sole that can absorb all the beating about on the rocks. Any good hiker will work, but hiking boots become heavy when wet, & those babies will be wet the entire day…

      No, they're not keeping the feet dry. I don't know of anything short of waders that would keep ya dry in there... those may fail too.
      The shoes are LaSportiva, Gortex trail runners, but the gortex does nothing in there. There are canyoneering shoes that many choose to wear, however I find that any good thick soled hiking shoe works well too.

      Those are a LaSportiva Trail Runners, Gortex, although that wouldn't matter in the narrows. They have a nice full sole and feel cozy on the rock with pretty good traction. I'm not sure of the exact model, but you'll find a variety. Most hiking shoes will work. I'd just avoid the super light ones for this hike. just make sure they have a fairly thick sole for this terrain, in my opinion.

    You say you like zion. Have you been to Bryce? It puts zion to shame. Lol

    • @theparkjunkie
      @theparkjunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, I'd hardly be the Park Junkie if I'd lived in Zion for 20 years and never visited Bryce huh?
      Of course I've been to Bryce, I've hiked every single mile of trail in that park at least twice.
      Zion and Bryce share a layer of sandstone, but aside from that, they are completely different worlds. Bryce has some spectac hiking and some of the most gorgeous terrain in all of Utah, which puts it high in the running for most gorgeous terrain worldwide...
      But as far as adventure is concerned, there is simply no comparison. Bryce has no canyoneering, no rock climbing and no mountains to climb. & there is hardly any water at all.
      Zion has all of that, & more...
      I'm headed to Bryce again in the next few days, but for now, here's my last journey in Bryce, a three day hike on the Under the Rim Trail, Bryce's longest, and least traveled trail. Cheers
