In defence of the crowd, this performance is literally a parody of the wild live act Restless once were. Can't blame 'em for getting older but it's time some young bands carried the mantle if rockabilly's going to be more than a museum exhibit.

      +Herbert That's a new one............ we're now a museum exhibit! Jesus.

+jess j As I say, can't blame you for getting older - it happens to the best of us. Mark vocally saunters through 'It's a Scam' like Bing Crosby, which is his prerogative and not necessarily a bad thing per se, but I remember that song being the aural equivalent of a rather enjoyable kick in the nuts. Which, personally speaking, I find preferable to Bing Crosby.
*Rockabilly* - as in 'the scene' (such as it is) - being a museum exhibit ... if there is no dissident youth movement reinventing the music and adopting it as an expression of "fuck off, mother and father."
"And you can stick those fairycakes up your arse, grandma."
Venerable artistes who have already disembarked from that voyage of discovery have every right to put their feet up on the chaise longue, spark up a big cigar and strum along to session gigs while gallantly indulging grandma's confectionary psychosis.

you are so much SPOT ON- Rockabilly has become "old timers" circuit now. Not that many YOUNG people joins the scene. WHY - because looking at old people trying to be "18 again" aint that flattering. I used to be a rockabilly guy and simply stopped when I had had it". I enjoyed watching Restless in Sweden some years ago, which was my first time with them, but the audience reacted exactly the same way as here. TAME. All the young people just stood there and did not know "what to do" - the old timers, 50 ish in age, shouted and hollered.
If Rockabilly wants to survive a new or younger scene, it has to reinvent itself which likely wont happen. Some of it has become a fashioin with no balls and the other half is the old timers.
When Neo-Rockabilly emerged it was young, energetic and fresh and so was the bands AND audience. Now we are all "old", typical 50+ . have a look into the future 10 years ahead !! how much is left then ?

A few more decades left in your dancing feet yet, Per, I'm sure.
I was at the 1984 gig which was recorded for the first Klub Foot album. 2,000+ crowd (at an estimate - correct me if I'm wrong, anyone) of mostly under-twenty-year-olds - pissed, shagging, dancing, going mental - and Restless played a farquharing blinding set. A-fucking-mazing. They always were a great live band, I saw them quite a few times, they fully deserve their continued success over the years. It's testament to their talent that they were a big draw on the psychobilly scene yet they never were a psychobilly band. They went through a phase of softening their studio sound which wasn't to mine and I know a lot of other rockabillies' liking but they were always worth seeing live.
If today's teenagers want to go along and pay their respects to any of the venerable uncles of modern rockabilly, there's nothing wrong in that. But for there to be a genuine, living, organic scene - as per the emergence of neo-rockabilly - the kids need to claim it for themselves and put something of their own into it.
I went to a Quakes gig in London a few years ago. They played an excellent set, I'm glad I went. Celtic Bones (ex-King Kurt, Klingonz etc.) were also well received that night, can't knock 'em. Nor would I want to.
The only teenage band on the card that night (I don't recall the name) played first and to an empty venue while the punters smoked and chatted outside. Literally - I was the only punter who went down into the venue to watch them, and one or two of the other musicians, to their credit, would pop out from backstage from time to time and show an interest.
They played what seemed to me to be some sort of strange mix of ska and psychobilly which wasn't to my taste but, by fucking Jingo, I respected those crazy, mixed-up kids for conceiving that strange cacophony of their own and for playing it balls-out to a combined audience of one old bastard and a disinterested barmaid.
The thing is, they didn't even have a modest posse of friends or girlfriends. Back in the day, the day of scene, even the most local, botched-together combo with half the talent of these skachobilly kids would have had the odd girlfriend, a misguidedly loyal mate and maybe a stray, emaciated mongrel following them around from gig to occasional gig.
I have to add that, of the few teenagers I saw at that show, one or two had clearly decided to recreate the haute couture of a 1980 rockabilly and I was impressed with the accuracy they achieved in that look. Took me right back to my school days. I had to fight the urge to walk up to them and demand they hand over their dinner money.
