  • In this video I will go through my entire turbo 1HZ setup, and discuss how it is performing today, how I maintain and look after a journal bearing turbo, and answer any questions you guys have thrown at me regarding the turbo conversion!
    More specifically, I will cover:
    - Why I turbocharged my 1HZ in the first place
    - The cost of the complete conversion
    - Everything you need for a 1HZ turbo conversion
    - My gauge setup
    - How to maintain a turbocharged diesel (journal bearing)
    - 0-100kph test
    - Blowby inspection
    Thanks to everyone who posed a question around my turbo setup- YOU'RE the reason this video exists. So thank you, and if anyone has further questions, find me in the comments below! Or on Instagram and Facebook :)

    Finally did this to my 1HZ after contemplating for around a year, didn't want to lose the reliability but needed a bit more berries. I went with the DTS Turbo, HPD front mount, 3 inch exhaust, catch can, redarc gauges and dyno'd, went from 79hp to 128hp running at around 14psi. I did a drive in drive out costing just under $10k, after having her for 14 years and costing me nothing, thought this wasn't too bad. Absolutely stoked with it and glad I made the decision to do so, she only has 225,000k's on the clock so should be good for another few 100k's as you said with kept up maintenance and regular oil changes. Great Vid Mate 👍

    G’day Will, had my 1HZ 105 turbo’d at about 130k ish by Berrima Diesel around 18yrs ago. Ran around 8-10 lb boost. Loved it after driving it N/A. Did a head gasket at about 360k ish (long story) but when the head came off we found micro cracks in the piston crowns. Decided on a full rebuild cause I love the old girl and I own it. Went with a turbo upgrade kit which is basically from the 1HZ-T that was in the coasters in Japan (so I’ve been told). It consists of pistons with thicker crowns, bigger gudgeon pins and thicker conrods. I had the pistons ceramic coated for good measure. Along with a new oil pump, water pump, new head, alternator, 3inch exhaust, catch can, and a few other sundry items it’s purring like a kitten. Runs about 13-14 lb boost. Looking at fitting the cross country large intercooler with a 79 series style bonnet scoop from CT custom repairs in Charters Towers. Had an upgraded gearbox from 360 gearboxes in Melbourne fitted a few years ago along with a heavy duty clutch, the box is an exchange item designed for towing.
    Yours is a nice rig, keep it simple and it’ll las t forever. 😎👍

    Great video . I’ve done the same to my 1HZ but still concerned about cracking cylinder heads albeit have all the mods and EGT gauge . Thinking of doing a 1HDFT conversion and not the FTE because of electronic fuel injectors
    Wanted to know whether you’d considered this ?

    • @WillsLandcruiser
      @WillsLandcruiser  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as the EGTs stay pretty cool and it’s not pushed too hard, damage shouldn’t really be present- and cracked cylinder heads are pretty rare in these things. You’re more likely to crack a piston. It’s all risks for sure but if you get a safe tune you can minimise those risks. Funny you mention the FT, as I am currently building an FTM (mechanical FTE) and I’ll have videos on this conversion as soon as my back comes good and I can start funding it again!

    With a conservative boost, say 7 psi, and not flogging the landcruiser when driving, do you reckon it will still get 700k plus kms out of an engine, like a unmodified 1HZ engine?

    Hello, my name is Ariel, I am from Argentina, I have a Toyota Coaster made into a motorhome, I travel a lot to Patagonia and I have many climbs and the torque is not enough. I bought a turbo and I am starting to modify it. Is it necessary to put a TPS on the diesel pump? Or just giving it more diesel is it okay?
    I only think give it 0.5kg of pressure, does this compromise the reliability of the motor a lot? Thank you

  • @joseph8852
    @joseph8852 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For 5k do you really think it’s worth it will?
    Or would you maybe hold off save up another 5k ( give or take a few k) and buy a 1hdt or 1HDFTE and drop it in

    • @WillsLandcruiser
      @WillsLandcruiser  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I guess it depends how far you wanna go. For 5k you can have a lot of fun and I know you can tune them to make a lot more power than I’m making but 5k and a conservative tune will last you and you’ll enjoy it. If you’re power hungry or want something that’s really going to make reliable torque, an FTE is definitely a good idea. However you’re looking at closer to 15k for an FTE once you take into account accelerator pedal, ECU and loom. And then to make more power from an FTE you’ve got mods to do to that as well. So it’s just a matter of how far you wanna go

      Yes so it’s about 5% out which means at 100, I’m actually doing 105, at 50, I’m actually doing 52.5, etc. so I possibly was a little late on that call. On 31s, I could get to 100 in 15 seconds. Definitely an impressive improvement from NA! :)

    How much power and torque? Is there any shift in phase of the peak torque?

    • @WillsLandcruiser
      @WillsLandcruiser  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peak torque pretty consistent before/after the tune at about 2100 revs. Now making 325nm and 85kw at all 4 wheels. Very conservative tune for reliability and longevity, obviously it is possible to get more out of a 1HZ than this

  • @lakhjitbirdi4500
    @lakhjitbirdi4500 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Mate. I had question with the turbo. Its designed to run at 12psi. When you set it at 10psi initially did it run ok? I intend to set it at 10psi. I do have the intercooler with the kit was just wondering how it ran at 10.

    • @WillsLandcruiser
      @WillsLandcruiser  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there, yes so I was running it initially at about 8/9psi. It was obviously better than stock, but no real power increase before the tune obviously. Fuel is what will give you more power, and the turbo is just a tool to safely add more fuel by keeping the mix right. JB Turbo recommend you run it at 14psi, and I would recommend that too, but there didn’t seem to be much of an issue running it at 10. You’ll likely see slightly higher EGTs and won’t be able to tune it quite the same
