  • Bach “12 Short Preludes” or “12 Little Preludes” are ideal study pieces for intermediary pianists.
Download sheet music (free) from IMSLP Music Library.
    tinyurl.com/y3...
The order of “12 Short Preludes” differs between editions. In this video series, the 12 Preludes are ordered in the way they are traditionally performed and recorded.
*Please note: The edition I used in this recording is the “Universal Edition” edited by Julius Rontgen. In the preface it states: “The short preludes and fugues are here given exactly according to the edition of the Bach society of 1886. Bach’s text contains no marks for tempo, expression or fingering. The few exceptions are noted where they occur”.
The American edition of Theodore Presser Co. featured above the keyboard in this video, was edited by Preston Ware Orem and is public domain, a necessary requirement for an online video such as this. Occasionally notes vary in this edition from my own edition, especially ornamentation.

I am addicted to Johann Sebastian Bach.
I think his compositions are the beginning and the end of music.
I want to master some of these "12 kleine Präludien".
I never get tired even if I repeat some two bars of J.S. Bach for several minutes.

@@davidroux7987 I adore Bach too, but always found this a strange thing to say. Chopin, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, etc certainly had more to say. They were the natural evolution of piano.

I was interested in finding out who taught Paul, and he is an artist. He studied at the Royal Academy of Arts and is an award winning painter. He was a gifted piano player, but didn't want to go down the concert pianist route, and became a teacher and a You Tube interpreter. And we are all the better for it.

I thought my subscribers might like a piece of Chopin with a tutorial, so have started practicing the Scherzo 2, as it's been occasionally requested in the past. Haven't played it for a very long time. After that, Beethoven's Pathetique and Moonlight sonatas. If I can, also with tutorials. Also, finish the Debussy Preludes book 2 and an extra-slow tempo recording of Schumann's Papillons for a blind pianist in USA that learns classical pieces by ear this way. We are in the mountains with the elephants this week, it's our daughter Emilie's 5th birthday, so big party tonight :) Take care and greetings to you from all of us over here in Thailand.

Excellent performances and interpretations! These are some of my favorite pieces. They have some unusual, spicy, harmonies and really clever thematic development. I have the publication of these in this order. I've played them all my life. But, since my copy is so worn out and missing pages, I attempted to buy an updated printing. I couldn't find the exact one, but I found one that I thought was the same. This new one has 11 of your preludes but has the addition of a few pieces (931, 943, 902a and 902,) and is missing BWV 929, 947, and some that I can't find BWV numbers for.

Paul, thanks for doing this. I was inspired to learn two of these songs because of your video. I have a question about one anomaly. In #9 (at 9:15), the 8th note on the bass clef (of the measure that’s in the center of the screen) is written as a B and your left hand is also playing that B, but we hear a D in the audio. Are we hearing a harmonic, did that area get incorrectly overdubbed, or something else happened?

This advice not only go with no. 1 but also the rest of Bach's keyboard pieces (ex. Invention, Well tempered Clavier)
Be familiar the ornaments first. I suggest you start with trills and mordent. Then, analyze the chord progressions of the piece. Bach is known as using "simple" chords to construct and deliver the piece. Last but not least, Be familiar with the modulation of the piece. This tremendously help with how each pieces were constructed. Good luck!!
