I have great memories of this magnificent Welsh soprano. Best Nozze Countess I ever heard and a stunning Desdemona and a charming recitalist. Surprisingly effective in Spanish song.
Margaret Price sang internationally at places like the Met. She was underused in England especially at Covent Garden. She was a glorious Fiordiligi and Countess and a heart stopping Desdemona with Domingo at Covent Garden in 1981.
A glorious soprano who frankly worked at the language AND managed to still keep things in style, round and grand. Her Mozart ladies were all effective. Her work in Verdi gorgeous.
My late mother loved Margaret Price, and after seeing this video I understand why. Her voice has a richness and an appeal. I wish there were more recordings of her available.
A wonderful singer who must not be forgotten. It is sad to think that if she was trying for a career in opera these days she might struggle despite that wonderful voice because so many operatic producers want skinny sopranos. Many of the ladies with a more ample body have taken to singing in concert halls or gone into singing teaching on the early side because of this attitude. Some have slimmed down , but with varied results for their voices. We would have been much poorer without having some of the larger ladies on the operatic stage, Margaret Price, Caballe, Dimitrova, etc. Opera is theatre, but the first medium for that drama is the voice. Producers ignore that at their peril and of course a soprano who looks great , but can't be heard can lessen the dramatic impact. The great Italian repertoire requires great voices - the singers who specialize in it are rarely small framed. Let's hope that there will always be a place for singers such as Margaret Price in the world's opera houses.
This is superb! A full-bodied and warm voice with a radiant upper register, tender piano tones (unfortunately, not at the final A) and a dramatic crescendo in the middle part.
It's difficult to say why this magnificent singer remains relatively unkown. She didn't like to travel and tended to sing in Britain and Western Europe. She also refused to sing certain composers, whom she felt were hard on her voice. I saw her as Desdemona with the Paris Opera. She's now 67 years old and retired, but what a great voice.
She was more known in the 70’s & 80’s where she was booked literally every month. She recorded Fiordiligi, La Contessa, Pamina, Konstanze, Donna Anna Aida, Amelia, Liu, ISOLDE ….about 80 pieces.
_What a radiantly-voiced singer._ _With so many singers w / unique voices, you always wish they had performed more "standard" works._ _I think Price's voice would have given 'Leonora' ( "IL Trovatore" ) sounds of such great beauty that we never heard ; but as one commentator wrote :: "She refused to sing certain composers". Maybe that was one of those roles ; however, she did sing 'Isolde' AND those roles are so different but what a great loss of the former character !_
This is amazing!!!- how unfortunate that she was one of the most under-rate sopranos of her generation. She was truly great in Mozart, Verdi and Strauss.
Immediately the diction, the tone, the spin, the dynamics, the musicality. She was everything. I actually like her more than Caballe. She was more in tune in the middle voice. Caballe went flat.
Margaret Price died on Jan 28, 2011 of heart failure ... what a fantastic voice, one of the great sopranos of our time! R I P !!

Those consonants are just like pearls. ❤️

Efortless total masterclass. And I've known people who worked with Margaret Price. She was apparently a very nice and sweet Lady

Holy cow! what an incredible performance! I can only compare it to Caballe which is my favorite. Magnificent voice and extraordinary musicality.

I love her Ravel's Sheherazade as well. Somehow my parents had it on tape.
oooo.. very nice!
Tastefully done!

She is indeed a wonderful singer, but I think this aria could do with a few more portamenti.
I agree..
Lovely and wonderful
