Song still stands up after over 50 years. The Hawkins Family Will Always "The Royal Family of Gospel Music." "Whether You Black...White...Rich Poor..Jesus care for You."
I have to listen to this song every day lol. I love Walter's voice and Tramaine still sounds the same. Love them both. For the longest I thought she and Edwin were married. It's wasn't until the late 90's I found she was married to Walter and very recently that they had kids and grandchildren together which made me even more curious about them but they rarely have spoken about there marriage. I know that they have known each other for a long time. In a video here on TH-cam where he sings the song "Thank You Lord For All You Done For Me", he thanked Tramaine for their friendship and for their children. It was there the said that they have known each other since she was 7 and he was 10. They grew up together in the same church.
edwin was a true pioneer. this was the beginning of contemporary gospel. to this day no one has been able to precisely duplicate the hawkins sound. but that era was stuffed full of new and exciting christian music.
My uncle was a huge baseball fan and went to Oakland to see the A’s play and he talked about this Soul Food spot called Lois’s in Oakland and the owner had a daughter named Tramaine who could sing like “nobody’s business”. He knew what he was talking about...
Yes, Lois the Pie Queen. Legend has it that she too was a singer and sang right up to labor. Tramaine came out singing! Been singing for the Lord ever since.
Classic ... Walter & Tramaine are my FAVORITE singers! I thought i was a Hawkins Afficianado and Historian ... you have me beat, Trevon! Thanks for posting of all these wonderful videos.
Thank you for sharing this video. I'm not familiar with this song but I love and miss this anointed man of God. I still can't listen to "Marvelous" without tearing up.
“If there ever was a moment where I dreaded throwing something away from the edit-the song that Tramaine and Walter did together was probably the showstopper, but “Oh Happy Day” was the hit. Sometimes, the best performance wasn’t the big hit, it was the song you didn’t know. So, to see Tramaine Hawkins dueting with her husband would’ve been magic to see. I knew gospel experts, especially of my age, would’ve eaten that up tremendously, but that’s one of the many sacrifices I had to make.” - Questlove on cutting “Ain’t It Like Him” from the Academy Award winning documentary “Summer of Soul”
Oh yes! Before the naysayers in church touch you with their ever so cold remarks about your talent and force you to give up. I should know I'm a preacher's daughter and Walter Hawkins God given gift helped me in those days. I left church but when I listen to his music and also Tramaine Hawkins it reminds me of where I need to really be. Not with church. With God in the heavens.
Tramaine was and still is gorgeous! She looks like the perfect candidate and winner of a pageant from this era!
This song should be featured in a Broadway show, along with many other Edwin and Walter songs.

Amen!! I was there when it all happened! Haven't found a similar sound. Truly God's gift!!
God morning, I am experiencing this song for the first time, and I'm loving the "Afro-centric" look on a very young Tramaine and Walter Hawkins.
