I just completed an off frame restoration on my j10 Your truck is coming along real nice 👍🏼 May I ask what tire and wheel combo you have it has a nice aggressive look
Thanks Prime. Appreciate you watching. Hope to see your J10 on TH-cam soon! I am running a 4" lift from Hell Creek and Rancho RS5000X shocks for suspension. Tires are 35"x12.50" Pro Comp's with black steel wheels. Not sure on brand, but Rough Country makes something that looks similar. This being a '68, it has the post mount leaf springs, so this specific kit won't work on your truck. That's probably a good thing though, as the price tag is pretty high in comparison for lifts for the J10's!
I have to rebuild my tailgate on my j10 i noticed they are just tubes wraped in sheet metal. My lower half is completetly gone. But i figured i could just get a peice of metal tubing and weld a wrap around if sheet metal over it. Grind it down and paint. But after watching yo7r video it seems the tube jist goes like 7 inchs in
Yeah. It's just the rollers. The rest of the tailgate is hollow. I thought about getting a piece of like 2" tube steel and welding the tailgate sheet metal directly to either side, completely replacing the prone to rust rolled section of sheet metal. Another idea would be like you stated and wrap a piece of sheet metal around the tube steel. I don't think either one would be bad.
Please God do not fix rust with bondo! Cut the rust out and replace with new metal. Bjs offroad has complete bedside panels for fairly cheap! Why did you not clean up those nasty welds along the wheel flare before paint 😂
LOL. I started down this rabbit hole when at the beginning of this project. The floor pans were replaced, along with that fender flare and the tail caps (basically the back of the bed where you see the body seam) If I were to have cut out all of the rust I wouldn't have a truck left! I used Bondo as a short term 1-2 year fix until I get my own shop and have the space and machinery to roll metal and make patch panels. As for the fender flare weld. I couldn't get my die grinder into the weld without eating at the bed side, the gap was too narrow. I probobly could have used a bur bit on a dremel in hind sight. Really though, I didn't want to make the truck so nice that I would be afraid to use it and take it offroad. Thanks for watching!
@@Harry_Dawg. should have welded from the underside. Since you did it the water you did a combination of inline cutoff tool with 4 inch disk and a 90 degree die grinder with 3 inch disk will cut those weld down. Sorry if I seem aggressive with my statements. I have over 33 years experience doing both hotrods/restorations/kustoms, and collision repair. I have had my ICAR platinum certification for over 15 years. As for that tailgate bottom, you don't need to be able to roll metal. Could have used a mild steel tube of proper inside diameter. Cut the skin in a straight line, removing the bottom half. Weld the tube to the cut line. Then if you really want to get detailed weld a replacement panel to both the skin and tube. Roll that panel around the tube with the weight of the tailgate and a rubber mallet. Spot weld it to the tube as needed. Then grind and finish off with a thin film of body filler. Again for the bedside panel you should have just bought a replacement from bjs and replaced the whole panel with new metal.
