1:42 Tom Scott: I am at a university somewhere in the USA, where Owl City also known as Adam Young is filming for the music video of his song "Metropolis". As I am strolling through the library you may noticed that I may be looking 20 years younger, that's because as I met Young and pat him on his shoulder, I turned 20 years younger.
If you, Adam, decide to quit, don’t. If someone reading this is thinking about quitting or giving up on a dream, don’t. That dream is waiting for you, don’t abandon it. That dream loves you, more than ever. Love it back. You can.
This video actually explains society ok. So many kids stand by each day wanting to do something when they see bullying happen but they too afraid of what will happen if they do do something. But when it comes to someone they know and love they snap. They're not being rude or selfish. They're being human.
Moral of the story: Never tolerate the bullying of bullies. ... wait. No... Moral of the story: Never write secret journal entries in public. There we go.
It might of been 8 years ago but I still listen to this a few times a week in my car play list on the way to work etc. I might be older now but this will always make me feel like the first time I heard this 8 years ago.

Fun Fact: This song was listed on IMDB as Zootopia's main theme, until it was changed to Try Everything by Shakira. Yea if you compare the story, there're actually some similarities. Nick seems to be uncaring about others, but one scene he stood up for Judy from being distorted by Chief Bogo.

having been bullied my whole life, from early elementary to currently in college, this is a very unrealistic situation. Most of the bullying isn't physical, as it's showed on TV, most of what I've experienced is verbal and emotional bulling, that hard to catch sometimes, your not sure if they were bullying you or not, but you still feel bad, it's the way they say words to you, that's subtle but probably the most harmful in the long run, messing you up emotionally.
Timothy Robert Yeah, it's a cute video but naively unrealistic. This is a Disney Channel version of middle school. If it ever does get physical, it mostly happens in the bathroom. I never once saw a bully hold a kid against a locker. Also, why were there so many children in the library and why was the bully there? When I was in middle school and high school, the library was my sanctuary away from my bullies, and it was mostly empty save for a few people scattered at different tables. Also, I saw the girl writing in a diary. Girls do not keep diaries anymore. With social media, they have an entire platform to express their thoughts. Either that, or they have a blog.
***** No offence, but girls do keep diaries still. How do you know, out of the seven billion + people on this earth, that they don't have diaries? I mean, you're not god, you don't know everything, I've seen people being shoved into lockers, I've seen people bully people in libraries (Sure it's rare, but it happens.) and I've seen MANY girls write in diaries. Sometimes the internet isn't the way to do everything and writing in a diary, is a personal and PRIVATE way of hiding your feelings. I'm tired so if this doesn't make sense I'm sorry, I'm not trying to start a fight or anything, Just simply putting my opinion across.
Ritsu Shima Dude, it's okay. You don't have to get so angry. It was a generalization. Some girls do still write in diaries, but from what I've seen, and from the people I have asked, teenage girls don't really keep diaries anymore. In the age of the internet, it's not as prevalent anymore.
***** Hey, I'm not angry yo, I was just simply stating my opinion with MY evidence as you did with yours, I wasn't trying to start anything or even seem angry xD Sorry about that.
Plot Twist: The bully was the good guy all along and decided to get the girl so the kid takes action being confident and saving her. What a good guy! (In all seriousness Adam Young is legit the best.)
Moral of the story: Don't bother if your classmates get beaten up by the bully, but if he steals your crush's diary, that's when you need to fight him.
Hello, I'm from Brazil and I just wanted to comment that this song is really good, it brings that good feeling of nostalgia, of our childhood fantasies, of the heroes we saw on TV and that we wanted to be, of something that has already happened or that can happen with you, something good of course, how happy and innocent we were, I will always remember this wonderful song.
kinds actually encourage other kids to fight in school cause it makes them look tough or whatever and usually when someone is bullied ,a fight usually arises, because most of the time kids just act like silly kids, but i love this video, really inspiring, and shows how things can be handled better! props
I dont undestand People Who say they see bad things in this vidéo... I only see hope courage and message like défend yourself and dont let thé bullies win... and Share love and happiness
Bas Kollen " i left my heart in metropolis" being the main line, kinda showed that he really only stood up when it was someone he truly knew and cared for that was getting attacked, and actually... that's actually sort of how the call of a superhero to take action begins in most comics, when a loved one gets attacked by a bad guy... so it kind of makes sense in way, he was only thinking about doing something until he saw someone he cared for alot getting attacked.
subata45 He didn't knew her, he just thought she was hot. They didn't actually talk. And to not care when some boys get attacked but only when a girl he thinks is hot is just being a dick. Hope we never have to rely on that super hero or else I'm fucked.
I remember listening to this song when I was in the back of a yellow bus going home from elementary school. Now I’m to be a senior in High school...time sure does fly. Edit: I’m a senior in college, still listening to Owl City. Thank you dearly, Adam.
first of all: That kids spine is popping out of his neck. Second of all: that moment when the guy grabs the girls hand and walks away, the girls expression is just like "what the truck?" Third of all, the bully's face when the boy and girl walk away is just like "Hashtag duckface selfie! :D"
Dagnes Negron That's not racism, if anything it's sexism. Sexism is when you think the other gender is inferior, but we can see here that he helped the girl (i.e. the other gender).

A rare case of a video that actually made me like the song even more. Usually videos make me like the song less! I mean I already liked this song, but after seeing the video I love it!
I just noticed the colour theme. Throughout the whole video, the prominent colour is purple-blue and grey-white (Look at everyone's clothing). The main character however is red. In the classroom sequence, he stands out. In the hallway sequence, he stands out among the people, the decorations and the lockers. In the library sequence, he again stands out. This matches the comic book strips in which the bad guys are purple and blue and the mighty hero is red. Even at the end, the circle around the girl being bullied is mainly purple-blue. And when the hero comes out, he's no longer just red. He's got his blue jacket. He's embraced the need to fight in order to help others. Embracing the concept of Yin and Yang. Edit: Yo, why's the bully white but his evil, comic book persona is black?

i honestly think owl city should get more credit than what he really gets. most of his songs should at least me on billboard top 100, not low in level like this.
This lyrical composition exudes a feeling of nostalgia and heartache as the protagonist, metaphorically alluding to the iconic Lois Lane, mourns the love she has left behind in the bustling metropolis of her lover, the celebrated Superman. The lyrics start with her acknowledging that she's left her heart in Metropolis, the city where Superman resides, symbolizing her emotional attachment to him. She feels a deep longing when they're apart, comparing herself to a postcard from a distant place wishing he was there with her. She travels through the city, taking various modes of transportation-subway, carriage, taxi-and it doesn't matter what she does, because all she wants is to be with Superman. She sees him as the only one who can truly reach her, and her love for him is unstoppable, like a hijacked plane, a runaway train, or a speeding bullet, all metaphors that relate to Superman's abilities. Her longing intensifies with the distance, with a thousand miles feeling like a million years. She sends hundreds of postcards, each expressing her wish for his presence. Whether she's on an airplane, a greyhound, a dirt bike, or a sailboat, her ultimate goal is to return home to him. In short, the song evokes a sense that Lois Lane is expressing her sentiments regarding the Man of Steel and how she has left a part of herself in the city of Metropolis.
What the hell is wrong with people who hate TMS? It's one of the best records ever, especially Dementia. It's different from Of June, Maybe I'm Dreaming, Ocean Eyes, ATBAB, Beautiful Times, etc. but still cool!
I imagine most people's frustration is due to the relatively radical change in direction. I'm listening to this album for the first time, after listening to all of his other songs and I have to say it's very different. Much more dance/house - personally I like it, it's hard to say if I prefer it.. but I can definitely understand if people don't like it compared to his other stuff.
I love TMS, but it took a long time for me to get warmed up to it. When I first heard Shooting Star (the EP), I was thinking, "This isn't the Owl City I know..." and didn't buy it. Then when TMS came out, the only songs I heard from it were Shooting Star and Good Time (neither of which I was a huge fan of). I thought Owl City had sold out and starting making cheap megapop for a quick buck, and I didn't give any of the album a chance at the time. Two years later though, I've heard all the exceptional songs on this album--Embers, Metropolis, Dementia, When Can I See You Again, Bombshell Blond--and gained new appreciation for the others I didn't like before. (I can't stand Gold though, sorry.) This album is very underrated by Owl City fans. Overall, I think it is a better piece of work than ATBAB and OE, and it is only surpassed by Ultraviolet.
bullying is never gonna stop. we need to teach the kids to stand up for themselves. i used to run and tell teachers. they can't solve the problem. It only stopped, for me, when i stood up and went: "Stop bullying me right now. I don't like it." The girl apparently didnt know she was doing it. and stopped. Now, if that doesn't stop, id call a teacher and say it even louder.
Trouble with that is, most bullies know exactly what their doing. Then when you try to stand up for yourself, you get in trouble. The worst they ever get is "Ok, whatever, don't do it again.", while you get treated as though you assaulted them unprovoked.
Yeah no, Teachers ned to be more involved, and more aware and active. When I've confronted bullies they did nothing, except for laugh in my face. you got lucky. Violence is never the answer, even if you are being physically abused, you don't do anything, because you could also get in trouble. Go to the teacher, or the principal, or even your parents, and explain to them the situation. That's the smartest route.
***** I never said to not do anything, I said to not resort to violence. What's stupid is getting violent with a bully, in most of those situations both parties lose. Go to a responsible adult, that can deal with the situation in an intelligent way, with a lot of heathy communication. That's when both parties come out winners, because there are reasons why bullies are bullies, and finding that out can help them get help, and be better people in the future.
***** hopefully when they are capable adults, they have learned enough from the adults in their life, to deal with their problems in a heathy way, by good communication. They will be able to talk about their problems with this person, or the problems the other person has with them. It's not they they weren't dealing with their own problems, they were, by getting someone smarter and older to guide them through the problem they are dealing with.

Cheers from 2021. If you see this we are friends.
This is why I don't go to public school. Bullying just like this happens so often, no one even cares to try and stop it anymore... its just sad.....
Hello, I'm from Brazil and I just wanted to comment that this song is really good, it brings that good feeling of nostalgia, of our childhood fantasies, of the heroes we saw on TV and that we wanted to be, of something that has already happened or that can happen with you, something good of course, how happy and innocent we were, I will always remember this wonderful song.
kinds actually encourage other kids to fight in school cause it makes them look tough or whatever and usually when someone is bullied ,a fight usually arises, because most of the time kids just act like silly kids, but i love this video, really inspiring, and shows how things can be handled better! props
Yeah, the ending is so realistic..
Ck009 lol
Go Adam! He creates an amazing song AND sends out a good message!
Nice song! Adam Young is amazing with his music
Damn I remember watching this for the first time in middle school and now I'm watching it on my lunch break at work lol
This song should have more then just 1million views.. its deserves more then 80million
I dont undestand People Who say they see bad things in this vidéo...
I only see hope courage and message like défend yourself and dont let thé bullies win... and Share love and happiness
I totally agree
Yeah, they're probably only mad because they haven't gotten rid of their insecurities that make them a bully-type.
Such a great message. Only stop bullies if they tease a hot chick
I mean how can he seriously think that he can take care of a girl he has a crush on if he can only think of himself?? - _ -* sorry I'm really upset
My ass, this is a very simple video somebody made for a known popstar because they knew it paid well.
Bas Kollen
" i left my heart in metropolis" being the main line, kinda showed that he really only stood up when it was someone he truly knew and cared for that was getting attacked, and actually... that's actually sort of how the call of a superhero to take action begins in most comics, when a loved one gets attacked by a bad guy... so it kind of makes sense in way, he was only thinking about doing something until he saw someone he cared for alot getting attacked.
subata45 He didn't knew her, he just thought she was hot. They didn't actually talk.
And to not care when some boys get attacked but only when a girl he thinks is hot is just being a dick. Hope we never have to rely on that super hero or else I'm fucked.
^agreed
bruh, this song has been stuck in my head and now I’m here. I’m gonna be listening to this for the next few days.
I can't believe my eyes, this song is so good.
As if I could love him anymore, he makes a kick-ass music video
Woaw so cute and really loved this video !! It's a reality that lots of kids suffer theses days but this vid is quite cool for them !!
It is .............
I remember listening to this song when I was in the back of a yellow bus going home from elementary school. Now I’m to be a senior in High school...time sure does fly.
Edit: I’m a senior in college, still listening to Owl City. Thank you dearly, Adam.
I love this video!!! It has a great message and "super" art along with amazing music!
This song gives me a different feeling every time
Yes YES!!!! SO GOOD!!!! Thank you for the effort in this and every work ♡♡♡
Why doesn't this have 6 billion views yet???
Never gets old
first of all: That kids spine is popping out of his neck. Second of all: that moment when the guy grabs the girls hand and walks away, the girls expression is just like "what the truck?" Third of all, the bully's face when the boy and girl walk away is just like "Hashtag duckface selfie! :D"
Sounding as picky as Linkara. lol
***** omg i love him do you watch nostalgia critic too :3
Tottaly agree xD
And its pretty racist that he only helped the girl -3-
Dagnes Negron That's not racism, if anything it's sexism. Sexism is when you think the other gender is inferior, but we can see here that he helped the girl (i.e. the other gender).
Adam you are a great artist keep making these songs and stay awesome and never EVER let anyone tell you any different. :-)
Owl City, you are my favorite artist, I believe am the only one playing ur songs in my state ,Edo -Benin City-Nigeria. I love your songs, more strength to give me more songs because I have every of ur songs.

My favorite artists are:
One Direction
Will I Am
Lorde
Clean Bandit
Inna
The Weekend
Ylvis
Just kidding :D Read the first letters and then you'll know my absolute favorite artist.
Lorde is not that bad, actually. Sure, her lyrics indeed are not that pure, but at least she has good vocal skills.
you don't like one direction?
@@katarzynamysluk3801 lorde's lyrics are the best thing about her
You obviously dont pay attention to details
Nice
@@soupgod1448 bruh he meant the lyrics aren't that clean/pg
Dear,Adam
You were changed my my music life by this song and some more.
This is it.😢😢
Admit it, at some point in your life, you have tried to see if you have superpowers. This summer, I spent hours trying to become a mermaid. When I was seven, my friends and I tried time after time to fly. #Embarrasing 😃🌺✌️
Ya. I watch H20 and I try to lift water when no one is watching
I once dreamed that I could fly and somehow did not realize that I was dreaming. The next day I tried to show my ffriends and face planted.
Some of us never stop wondering/wanting them.
I love this song! the point where the girl stands up to the bully and the Boy that likes her pushes him. Just priceless
I was in this music video! It was so much fun! Everyone was so nice!
which part where you in?
Spencer Abrams I was just an extra, but it was still really fun
I was in this too ha! We probably walked past each other 20 times
Haha yeah probably
I noticed that, I was like, wait his skin tone changed
I love how the bully looks so serious all the time
He's not he laughs when throwing the books about!
His acting is actually pretty good. Like he looks like he's hiding behind his own insecurities.
Anyway why are we all complaining about the boy only standing up for the chick? Aren't we here for the music?
I just want to add to my other comment that I love how this video shows that everyday actions can be heroic
Its surprising how many people are in the library
the way the kid just walks off in the end... just grabs the book, shoves the bully, gives it back to the girl, and walks off.
I cant stop listening to this song!
GOOD (best singer yet)
me TOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me 3
It's about the courage he has inside and the fears he beats in himself in order to be the guy he wants and thinks himself to be
this was filmed at my school
what a lucky young lady here🎉
i wish the world had more music like this..!!
Funny how I find a music video of my favorite owl city songs, and I'm just like " There's a music video for this song?" :0
Owl City is one of my favourite artist of my past days so I wont forget among all artist
I love this song!! 🤓
Metropolis - Owl City
---- Lyrics ----
Oh, oh, I can't even take it in
Oh, oh, I can't even take it in
Oh, oh, I left my heart in Metropolis
So far apart, I check that the coast was clear
I feel like a postcard, I wish you were here
A subway through the dark, carriage through the park
Taxi down the street, get out and use my feet
Don't matter much to me what it is that I do
As long as I'm coming home with you
Oh, oh, oh, as far as I can see
You're the only one, the only one who can get to me
Like a hijacked plane or a runaway train
Or a speeding bullet, there's no stopping this
I left my heart in Metropolis
A thousand miles feels like a million years
Like hundreds of postcards that say I wish you were here
Airplane through the sky, greyhound racing by
Dirt bike on the beach, sailboat on the sea
Don't matter much to me what it is that I do
As long as I'm coming home with you
Oh, oh, oh, as far as I can see
You're the only one, the only one who can get to me
Like a hijacked plane or a runaway train
Or a speeding bullet, there's no stopping this
I left my heart in Metropolis
I left my heart in Metropolis
Like a hijacked plane or a runaway train
Or a speeding bullet, there's no stopping this
I left my heart in Metropolis
I left my heart in Metropolis
I left my heart in Metropolis
I left my heart in Metropolis
Oh, oh, I can't even take it in
Oh, oh, I can't even take it in
Oh, oh, I can't even take it in
Oh, oh, I left my heart in Metropolis
i honestly think owl city should get more credit than what he really gets. most of his songs should at least me on billboard top 100, not low in level like this.
The only time kids huddle around like in the end is when there is a fight.
In short, the song evokes a sense that Lois Lane is expressing her sentiments regarding the Man of Steel and how she has left a part of herself in the city of Metropolis.
love this song
I left my heart in metropolis
What the hell is wrong with people who hate TMS? It's one of the best records ever, especially Dementia. It's different from Of June, Maybe I'm Dreaming, Ocean Eyes, ATBAB, Beautiful Times, etc. but still cool!
I imagine most people's frustration is due to the relatively radical change in direction. I'm listening to this album for the first time, after listening to all of his other songs and I have to say it's very different. Much more dance/house - personally I like it, it's hard to say if I prefer it.. but I can definitely understand if people don't like it compared to his other stuff.
Yeah totally agree with you man! TMS is my favorite Owl City Album ever
(I can't stand Gold though, sorry.)
This album is very underrated by Owl City fans. Overall, I think it is a better piece of work than ATBAB and OE, and it is only surpassed by Ultraviolet.
2017 and I still love this! Adam, you'll always be my first love
bullying is never gonna stop. we need to teach the kids to stand up for themselves. i used to run and tell teachers. they can't solve the problem.
Bullies are all cowards. Once I stood up face to face with mine and told him to cut it or else, he never bothered me again.
