  • Eton College - the most famous public school in the world. Is it really the most private school in the world - an elitist establishment for rich toffs or an education second to none open to everyone? Alumni - including Michael Bentine (The Goons), Patrick Macnee (The Avengers), Lord Carrington (UK Foreign Secretary) and Lord Home (UK Prime Minister), and a guest appearance from Joanna Lumley. A film by Simon Dewhurst and David Rocksavage - discuss....

Thank you very much for the upload of this.. Dunno why, but as an American, elite private schools in Britain is such an interesting topic..
Not to mention the fact that such an old, and otherwise forgotten, media needs to be re-uploaded and shared with the world... Thank you for doing this.

Why is this tagged as BBC? It has nothing whatsoever to do with the BBC!

It was bought by the BBC in 1980 and shown twice on BBC2. As you know tags mean visitors.

A lot of actors have come out of Eton -- Dominic West, Tom Hiddleston, Harry Lloyd, Eddie Redmayne, Damien Lewis, other posh schools -- Benedict Cumberbatch went to Harrow and Henry Cavil (Stowe) and Matthew Goode (Exeter)

Hello to Old Etonian Willie Crawshay, thoroughly decent chap, who sang the boating song for us on school camp in 1979. Not a toff, or an oddity.

The callousness of the joke at the expense of a lad committing suicide 😢
A Ruling Elite raised apart from others and without empathy or humanity just a belief in their superiority.
A very dangerous mix and explains why the world is as it is 😢

If you like seeing others trampled and kept down including your own kin and community then fine. There are always people like you who want to get over others and would do anything to do so.
These same people would not accept you or your son so readily. They are a class apart and strongly fight to keep it that way. The fact they exist keeps life hard for the rest of us. Other countries thrive without private/Elite schools and have much less inequality and chances for all to achieve and do well.

I didn’t attend Elton, but did attend a boys school, where the schoolmasters wore gowns and the head wore a mortar board.
The male staff were all ex military and the female staff, who mainly taught the girls were almost without exception “spinsters”.
Looking at some of the slovenly students at some of the local comprehensives, I feel that most would actually like a more. stringent school life, with defined boundaries and more formal teachers, but don’t feel that can admit to this, as they could be the subject of mockery.
A real pity and I suppose a case of just being led by the nose.

It pains me to disagree with the very agreeable Michael Bentine, but - beating apart - Eton hardly seems like "a very tough society." At least in comparison to the all-girls boarding school I attended, where conforming to petty norms was as mandatory as eating three disgusting meals a day (Etonians, this film indicates, are force-fed just one). Aside from at the half-term break, we could see our families for only two days in a 13-week term; slept in cold dormitories for several years before graduating to the semi-privacy of sleeping cubicles; couldn't watch television until we were in the sixth form; and so on and so on. Amazingly I wasn't unhappy at the time (a time slightly earlier than when this film was made, to be fair).

Tough? Try living in a sink estate in London. Gangs, drugs, murder, mental illness. Where you walk past a crime just trying to get home. Would like to see any of these entitled self serving twats survive in the environment I had the misfortune to grow up. Tough? Wouldn't last 5 minutes!

Maybe The US department of education should make this type of training apart of the curriculum. We have so many sensitive entitled brats now who have a ridiculous inflated sense of grandiosity, maybe some time away from mommy and daddy and taught how to be an adult and how to be polite and graceful and have a work ethic might benefit our future generations, and in the long run, us

Oh don't worry, if you've got the requisite dosh you can send your children to similar schools in the States. Or at least in New England. (Phillips Exeter Academy, where Mark Zuckerberg went; Phillips Academy Andover, alma mater of both Bush presidents; Deerfield; Groton, St. Paul's etc. etc.) That their existence is perhaps unknown to "regular folk," or at least to those who haven't read Catcher in the Rye, says a lot for how successfully this country has marketed the myth of its own meritocracy.

On the one hand Michael McCrumm, who said it, was not entirely accurate as there were plenty of us who had mild handicaps but we hid them well or learnt to cope with them in hostile surroundings. On the other hand he was just being accurate and coupled it with some acceptable reasons for non-qualification. The zeitgeist of forty years ago could take his remarks in its stride.
