North Wales Wildlife Trust CEO Frances Cattanach discusses the senseless destruction of the Llyn Brenig Ospreys nest which occurred on the evening of 29th April, with BBC Breakfast presenters Louise Minchin and Jon Kay.
I was only in Llyn Brenig a week last Tuesday fishing with a close friend of mine & everytime we visit Brenig this time of year & throughout the summer months it's always a joy to see these beautiful birds flying around the lake. Why somebody would want to do such a terrible thing to such a rare & beautiful bird is beyond belief.
No disrespect but did nobody inform her that the new nest was put up illegally by unknown people. Just tell the TRUTH! This is not ok. This is my local nest & security must be put in place for these 2 three year old Ospreys. This is their first attempt at building a home & family & they are after all protected by law!
Agree. The new illegal nest does not look fit for purpose and I highly doubt the ospreys will use it. I think the most likely outcome now will be that the young pair just spend this season together defending their territory and then hopefully over the winter, a proper replacement nest can be erected in its place and with better security in place for next year.
She knows but according to a new update, they are hoping to dampen down anyone else taking any unauthorised action out of misguided wishing to help. They're going to leave it there for now to minimise further disturbance. It's such a poor nest - you can see the water through gaps - my opinion is the birds won't use it. Or, at least, I certainly hope so!
@@GeemeffGeemeff I doubt very much if any one will be sentenced to five years for this. Convictions for this kind of thing are rarer than the birds themselves.
How could anyone do this? Don't think it was a random act of local vandals.. A detective would start by asking what do Ospreys do best? ~ fishing. Some bunch of local disgruntled jealous fishermen who are fed up seeing Ospreys catch fish with such poise & ease. imo 😥 That's my guess , I hope they are caught. Bigger £fines & jail time should be mandatory. 🐱♏🏴
I hope the police go all out to catch the idiot who did this. He went purposely out in the middle of the night with a chainsaw to commit this inane act. I’m no birdwatcher, but they did give me pleasure on my visits to Brenig. Please catch the bastard.

I watched this news report I can not believe some idiots just vandalized it for what purpose I hope they catch them evil just evil

The law was just changed from max 6 months to max 5 years for animal cruelty.

There are various theories, but what is certain is the police are investigating thoroughly, this is staying high profile.
Perhaps some of the donations could go towards a reward for information leading to a prosecution?
A reward of £2000 has already been offered. Let's hope it prompts someone to talk.
Make an example once the culprits are caught. Fines of 15k to help fund a metal vandalproof nest sight and 5 years in prison should suffice
