    Fishing is the calmest soothing thing until the bite. Then its just a lot happening at once. Been ages since I fished. Mostly lake and small river. Tried going out on the sea to fish a couple of times. Learned that I easily get sea sick and spent the time trying not to barf :P

    when you catch a lot of ling are you allowed to donate them to like retirement homes or homeless shelters or could that be considered commercial fishing and you would get in trouble?

    Couple of questions, if I may, John.
    Is it possible to find out the history of the wrecks you fish? Name of the ship, year it went down, lives lost, etc? I just find it a little eerie, but also fascinating.
    You often mention fishing gear, is this nets laid down by large commercial boats? Are they fixed, or drift nets? Again, I just find it all fascinating, but don't fully understand what you are describing.
    Thanks mate, keep up the GREAT work!

    Great vid as always, John. Regarding the tangling line, The fire service method for not having a line tangle is to put one end in a bag/sack and feed the rest in haphazardly. When you need the help rope either throw the bag so the line follows out. Or just pull the line from the bag. Sounds complicated but if you try it you'll find it works.👍

    Absolutely lovely day out there. Earlier in the video, you wouldn't have been able to tell sea from sky if it weren't for the clouds.
    You said ling are part of the cod family? Do they taste similarly, or do they have their own distinct taste? Also, thank you for explaining how you dispatch them. Quick and as painless as possible.
    And that one conger was huge! Super slimy, too, he was. They definitely look like they've got some good fight in them.

    Fishing off the Brittany coast when about the same age as your James. Mum snagged the bottom. The skipper said she had a conger and that I should be put in the fish barrel. Skipper was huge so was the bloomin fish...I watched from the roof of the boat. Once on board the conger was whacked about five times with a table leg filled with lead and still wouldn’t die. Couldn’t get it into the boot of the very small rental car so gave it to the fisherman for soup.

    I live in Oregon, on the Pacific. We have a few species of fish that we cannot retain, namely but not limited to, Yellow Eye rockfish. They suffer barotrauma as well, we use what is called a descender device to return them to a more normalized pressure gradient. I cannot in any way speak to your Ling, but the studies here show there's a good (not great) survival rate when a descender is used. Might be worth asking your local biologists about it if you don't wish to keep the Ling? Your local Bio's could possibly even contact Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and/or US Fish and Wildlife for study information if needed.
    Always amused you guys just call them "Ling" and are directly related to Cod, our version, we call Ling Cod, and have zero relation to Cod. LOL

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      - I used to be a Fisheries Officer and worked very closely with marine geologists on a number of projects. When fishing in less than 100ft of water the descender type tools do return fish well. Not all but some. However fishing in an water over that and the damage is to more than the swim bladder. And although it might go back out of sight the damage is already done. Ling are not a species that copes well.

    I'm interested in your anchoring technique. We see you feeding out the role from midships but presumably it's fastened to the bow. Do you fasten a bow rope to your anchor rope or go around the cuddy to fasten ( probably not as it's pretty risky ) ?
