The finest way to travel was still the old style compartment and side corridor. You had complete control over your environment- heating, ventilation etc. if you were travelling late at night the seats were long enough to stretch out on and have a kip. The lights could be dimmed or switched off. If you had the compartment to yourself you could shut the door, pull down the blinds and have the journey in complete peace and quiet. Bliss !

    • @dave1001
      @dave1001 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Yes that was the best way to travel and the seats were really comfortable too which included the backs and arm rests unlike todays rock hard seats. They call this modern? i prefer the old than the modern

Here in Switzerland and Germany, there are still a few services that offer compartments. For example old ICE 1s to 3, german intercities or BLS Regio expresses. I agree, travelling in compartments is really different... except if they are crowded

      With respect to Lionel Bart.

Not very quick got you from place to place
But now there's just jams, half a mile thick
Stay in the human race, I'm walking
They've stuck parking meters outside our door to greet us
No, Fings ain't wot they used t'be

That's because after Exeter, the line isn't really built for high speed trains. It's too winding, and it's not possible for high speed trains in any part of Cornwall, or the section between Exeter and Newton Abbot which includes the bit the main line is separated from a beach by a wall. Also the reason why this section (past Exeter) hasn't been electrified with overhead cables, as they'd get destroyed every winter.
The seas in winter off Devon and Cornwall are the most ferocious in the whole of the UK. Have you seen pics of massive waves crash over the wall onto the line, or of sea spray enveloping trains. It's mad. It's the reason why the new Azumas terminate at Exeter, and you have to transfer to a slower diesel train for the rest of the journey. The line past Exeter is too dangerous to put overhead cables on.

I think I speak for many of of your subscribers when I say your trip reports liven up an otherwise rather dull Friday morning. I'm sure the attendant wouldn't have minded if you'd switched to a four top to charge your electronics if they'd been in dire need. And finally, on a personal note, I'm so glad you filmed the left side of the entrance to Paddington. I always ride the Heathrow Express in First Class (yeah, I know, daft as all get get out) because it's the back of the council flats in Paddington that tell me I'm back in London. It's been 11 years, but I would've still gotten a lot homesick seeing them again. Cheers.

Thanks for sharing, i have travelled from Paddington to Exeter St Davids a few times and back again, i go for a few days holiday. I have also used the branch line from Exeter to Paignton, via Dawlish people wave as train passes by. I think i might try first class as i saw a few offers last time i booked, its good to know they offer drinks. Such a lovely journey by train, i am getting itchy feet but cannot go anywhere at moment with pandemic but hopefully come summer things will change.

GWR have certainly improved their first-class offering since I last travelled with them. Back then you got tea and biscuits served two or three times during the journey if you were lucky! You did get an HST, however, so it wasn't all bad.

    • @wrestlem8
      @wrestlem8 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I found the 800 series of trains that GWR Now lease / own to be Very uncomfortable I wrote letter to GWR customer complaints & never received a reply
The older HST sets were Very Comfortable in first class not like the horrible cheep & nasty seats in the Hitachi trains GWR haven’t listened to Customers who pay lots of money to travel first class there’s no more traveling chefs & not many Pullman services running since Covid I feel GWR are just maxing out there profit for the company & too blazes with customers be it in first class or standard .
GWR had something Good once that No other train company had which was good service & Comfortable trains but now they see passengers as Cash cows the staff are excellent but the management takes a lot to be Desired probably failed train managers or failed chefs

The activation system has been a constant problem since the IET came in, sometimes work most of the time don't. Add in the confusion when they have incorrect coach lettering too. 1st Class in a HST at least gave you a big comfy seat. Heck you can't even get a hot bacon roll on the IETs now. So much for having better facilities..

    Greetings from Australia!
In 2017, I had the mis-fortune to catch a train from Penzance.
My destination was Swindon and there were supposed to be a limited number of stops on the way... NOT including Bristol Temple Meads... Something like: Plymouth, Taunton, Bridgewater, Swindon,.... => Paddington.
The train left at a reasonable time, (I was not on a tight schedule so I wasn't too worried about the odd 10 minutes) but the driver came on over the PA and apologised for the 20 minute late departure... (his comment that he would endeavour to make up some of that time would come back to haunt all of us).
All was fine, until we left Bridgewater, something like 10 minutes late... (we'd made up ten minutes)
As we were about to enter the Bristol Temple Meads railyards, we hit a red light! Twenty minutes later, we started to move, slowly.
We pulled into the station and the driver made a mistake (or was directed to) and unlocked the doors. Of course, all those who wanted Bristol Temple Meads had departed earlier to catch a connecting train *Because This One Wasn't Going To Stop There.*
But a football match had just finished in town & suddenly it was standing room only!
We moved on only to be stopped at the next red light!
To shorten this story, the next 3 stops took about 3 hours and I, with my newly broken wrist (courtesy of a boulder that bit me in Pendeen the previous day), was getting very short tempered...
I should apologise to anyone offended by my typically Australian use of the vernacular as I attempted to alight at Swindon, by first throwing one bag out the door then dragging the second out behind me.
I did learn *_NOT_* to catch trains in England on long weekends if you want to get anywhere at a reasonable time frame.

Very good summary of the trip. I agree with your comparison with LNER; I think they have the edge with service. Also, the East Coast Main Line is faster, with the train regularly hitting 125 for quite long stretches. I did the Inverness-London run in first class just before lockdown. Having seen negative comments about the seats I was dreading the trip, but they were actually fine (it's an 8-hour trip). I think a big difference between the IET and HST is space. I felt the standard class sections of the HST were spacious and airy, whereas I feel I'd really want to be travelling first class in the Class 800 to avoid feeling claustrophobic.

GWR's refurbished 1st class on their HSTs was the best I've travelled on. These didn't seem to bad but lacked that bit of elegance the previously mentioned sets had to offer. They could do with cleaning their windows as well (for those who had a window!)

Like bacon rolls , plain cheese sandwich. first class lounge at paddington is great. First class advance tickets makes it worth while.

Hey Dylan. I really enjoy your videos. I’ve been to London several times but this past winter I had the chance to take a quick trip around the UK via train and really enjoyed it. Landed at Heathrow in late February and went to Windsor. From there to Cardiff for the night. Then Swansea to Shrewsbury for the night. On to Liverpool and Carlisle for the night, then to Edinburgh for a few days. Back to London for a few days. Even took a side trip to Brussels. I loved every minute. Your vids make me anxious to get back. Just a quick question, I bought all of my tickets (some 1st class and some standard) on the Trainline app. I was happy with the pricing and flexibility. Is that the best site to use or is there something better? Wish our system of trains in the U.S. was as nice as the UK.

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed my video and I'm pleased to hear you enjoyed your trip! The trainline is good for split ticketing (where it is cheaper to buy two tickets for the same train) and just generally keeping all of your tickets in one place. That said, they do often charge a small booking fee so I tend to shop around and just buy my tickets directly from the operators where possible.

We were lucky enough to take a train trip to Santa Barbara just before they shut us down again this past week. We had Sleeper Car Service both ways because that's the only way to get privacy on an Amtrak and you don't have to wear your masks in your room. The only bad part of the trip was I had for the very first time a room attendant that was just awful.. Bad attitude, zero service, acted like we were a bother more than anything. Never had that happen before but it was made up by the train attendant we had on the way back who was just wonderful and got much respect and kudos for her service as well as a generous tip. The other downside was we currently downgraded dining service which was like a bad mix up of TV dinners and airline food. At least we had thought ahead to bring some snacks LOL. First time out in 7 months and we loved it but we're back in quarantine again. Hope you are well, looking forward to future videos as always.

Travels around Cornwall remind me of Poirot and the places where he solved perhaps the most serious but also the most interesting murders. Today, GWR offers us truly beautiful trains (IC - HST), although I am surprised that the service in the first class is not a little richer, considering that the trip lasts a little less than 6 hours, but also because of the rich and widely known tradition of GWR.
Is it possible that the price of the trip varies so drastically in relation to the train departure period (as I noticed in your two videos from 2019 - £ 39.25 and from March this year £ 58.10) or did I not understand something best there. By the way, I apologize for having to seek help from Google in order to write better in English, because I'm not that good at it. Thank you for the video, for this, but also for all the other reports from the train journey. I’m definitely sure the top three in the rail travel presentation program are on you tube: You, Nonstop Eurotrip and Simply Railway.
