Don Woody if I remember correctly. He recorded a few excellent tracks including "Barking up the wrong tree" and "Bird Dog", as well as "Morse Code". This is a good rendition. The definition of good rockabilly is a bit like good art and you know it when you feel it.
Now these guys are good ! You can understand the words, and the other guys can play real great. THAT's what make a good band. They don't drown out each other. The acoustics in the place is just right. To much echo in some places will ruin some good people's work. Good work guys !
Dick Dale actually coined the term in the late 40's. He played old country and western songs and jazzed them up and called it rockabilly. Or so he claims. I think i believe him.
Rockabilly didn't exist as a word until Guy Mitchell cut a song of that name. It was simply hyperactive country music.Fats Domino once said he considered himself a country singer. It wasn't till the 70s that the word began to enter the curriculum
The style of this band is definately rockabilly, and to my ear sounds specifically like "western swing" rockabilly. A similar band would be Big Sandy and the Fly-Rite Boys. Anyone disagree?
True that Sam Phillips was recording black artists before Elvis. Sure there were archeic rockabilly (hillbilly bop) before rockabilly, you mentioned Roy Hogshead, Paul Howard, Chet Atkins..even Bill Haley falls into that category (pre-54, pre Comets). I define (and many with me) artists such as Carl Perkins (the composer of Blue Suede Shoes), Gene Vincent (Bebopalula), Johnny Cash as rockabilly as opposed to artists like Fats Domino and Little Richard, chuck Berry.
This is great stuff - appears amateurish at first then you listen more closely - they are quite good. Lets get rid of the trolls listed here - we don't need them
I am a a big fan of the rock and roll trio, best rockabilly group ever, but not the first, nor the first to use the term, they cut there first records in 1956, rockabilly wa a recognized style by late 1954, the trio didn't start until Elvis was on the charts, and they worked at the same electic supply warhouse and tried to get into the music busines, but by the time they got going, rockabilly was being replaced by sedate and polished rock and roll, they never got a top 20 hit, outrageous!
Not excatly..Rock'n'roll came from New Orleans (Fats Domino said in 1955 that Rock'n'roll had been played in NO for a decade). Rockabilly grew out of Memphis as "the white" rock'n'roll being country based as opposed to black r&b/r&r that was more blues based.
The word was coined by Tin Pan Alley-simple as that.Guy Mitchell just sang the song. I think you are new to rockabilly mentioning names of what were no more than regional artists who cashed in on Elvis and Carl Perkins. As for Fats Domino he was really a country singer.Who said so? HE DID
Not sure I agree with that. Sam Phillips was recording black r n b and Blues artists ...even some doo wop before 1954, when Elvis walked into the studio. This doesn't take into account performers like Roy Hogshead who was playing this kind of jumped up hillbilly/western swing in 1952! Who cares...it's a great musical form, arguably America's only hisorical legacy.
@tugs44 they have more style than "the reactors"(such name BTW)you guys should be ashamed of havin a youtube channel, but amazes me the fact that you guys make the poor TRY to make good music ;)
This is realy great! Saw them for the first time @ High Rockabilly Calafell 2010, and that was one of the best act that year.....
Absolutely wonderful. Very tight. Guitar is magic. Thanx

Great song. Almost like Don Woody. Really nice. You're right that's Rockabilly.
Dick Dale actually coined the term in the late 40's. He played old country and western songs and jazzed them up and called it rockabilly. Or so he claims. I think i believe him.
Wow just great this is real rockabilly, just love it
20 years ago I learned a few things from an old guy who had an F hole guitar like the leads. I'd give my left nard for that old box.
@TheBalvis The Skip Rats they still play together at times. All members are involved in other rockin' bands

Great video!
I want to download this song! where can I find it?
After further thought, I disagree with myself. Western swing has steel pedal added to the rockabilly sound. This is rockabilly in it's original form.
You guys are the best ! you guys really get it!
whats the name of this great rockabilly band?
I've booked the Skip rats, and they are terific, pull a good crowd too
worlds best rockabilly number ewer.
Its my dream to play at the rockabilly rave

Real Rockabilly !!!!!
GOOD AS IT GETS
that was awesome!

Is the lead guitar an old Gretsch? Guy does a real decent job on it. Who needs Gene Vincent when you got theses guys.
This is real ROCKABILLY
It's the real deal. Yeah.
RAB RULES!
The word was coined by Tin Pan Alley-simple as that.Guy Mitchell just sang the song.

The Skip Rats - Morse Code
Yes this is real Rockabilly!!
Great!!! TH-cam search MANUEL VARGAS (DISCO 45 and VIVA EL ROCK AND ROLL) and you will see an honoring to rock and roll music.
this is great
Rock ´a ´billy Rules........Yeahh
why does it sound like a Johnny Cash song mixed with Elvis sounding vocals?
GO CAT GO!
great rockabilly
Thats the best!
rockin' fan f'ntastic!'!
Utterly HEP!!!!
Nonsense. The late 40s? Dude, Dick Dale was born in 1937. And he has nothing to do with Rockabilly.
Because it does NOT sound like Mozard opera mixed with Britney Spears vocals ;-)))
Rockabilly for ever! Yeeehaaa!
This rocks and it is Rockabilly in opposite to crap like Dick Brave.
cool!!!!
nice guitar......
If you dont like this then you dont like Rockabilly!
no problem... :-)

Western Swing What?

I fucking liked it

@tugs44 they have more style than "the reactors"(such name BTW)you guys should be ashamed of havin a youtube channel, but amazes me the fact that you guys make the poor TRY to make good music ;)
search the Mystery Gang ;) a little bit better
check it out :)
Good except for the singers 'overdramatic' singing of "marse code" instead of "morse code". Some attempt at a silly period correct accent maybe?
dwse psile
:))
I disagree,it's not the origin of blues & R&B.
Yap... real 50's style, not some neo-crap... :-)
