Gabby was a musical Buddha.
Uncle Gabby ❤ two masters right there 😊Aloha from Hawaii 😎🤙🏽🌴
Cheeeeeeehhhhhhuuuuuuuuuu 💚 🤙🏿 uncle Gabby
Keep searching Gabby there's alot more, Peter Moon also. Two masters. You can tell Gabby also listened to what his kids were listening to and incorporated it into his 1970's stuff. The back yard video's are awesome with his son's and other Hawaiian music royalty.
The great Gabby Pahinui and Peter Moon! ❤️🤙😎
Wow...I am born and bred Hawaiain. Always respected and admired Gabby's importance, but only now realize...I have never heard him speak!!! Wow! And this video..doesn't do him justice. I wish you could see one where he actualy sings
Slack key! He was all nail!!! Unko Gabby “POPS” Pahinui! Legend in Hawaii!!!
I was stationed in Hawaii. As a young Navy Submariner I discovered Gabby Pahinui and Peter Moon. MAGIC. I got to break bread with them at luaus. 🎶✌️❤️😎👽😍⚓️😇
So good to see Peter moon again . He look so young there and Gabby is just Gabby the Hawaiian master slack key uncle. Mahalo nui for this. I love those times when everything was simple and so Hawaiian!
Gabby Pops Pahinui singing and playing slack key is pure Hawaiian soul music. Me Ke Aloha Pumehana.
Uncle Gabby! 💖
Im so glad to see younger generations reacting to our famous old time kupuna and there life long music. Every year they have a Kanikapila jam session down at Waimanalo Beach Park, its so awesome, loads of entertainers, in Honor of Pops Pahinui. I hope one day you both can come down and just to be there and listen to all these Kanaka Mauoli jam on their guitars n ukuleles. Bring your picnic gear, they have awesome food booths, the beach is right off to the side. Sunscreen is needed for the visitors for sure. You'll be amazed and in awe. Especially when you can sit with a lot of Kanakas, keiki, and our kupuna. Gosh i miss hm., Ke Akuas country/Aina 😢🤙💯🌺🎶🎤, Aloha and eo' o Waimanalo 🌺🌺🌺
Wow I was just scrolling & came across this & love you guys for this I'm a fan of yall page now brand new subscriber
Killer record choice . Being Hawaiian and learning slack key the traditional way that gabby refers to is spiritually rewarding.
You were watching two slack key masters just fooling around on a hot sunny day . Rest in peace Uncle Gabby and Uncle Peter . Thank you for all the music you left for us to listen .
@@brianbenitez3551 Are you related to Darren Benitez? He’s another master/legend in Hawaii!!
@@nomakeanykine No I'm not related to Darren Benitez . Yes Darren is another master in Hawaiian Music so sad that he passed away . I love my Hawaiian music and all kine music to be honest . Aloha .
@@brianbenitez3551 ahhh no problem, was just curious when I saw Benitez in your username. Thanks for replying, it’s much appreciated. Pls take care and stay blessed, aloha
@@nomakeanykine Same to you my friend, much aloha for you !!
That’s exactly how I learned to play. Sit there watch the family backyard kanikapila. Go home practice in secret until you feel like you are good enough for join the circle. Growing up in Hawaii was the best.
Aloha braddah. Mahalo for appreciating the music of “pops” himself
Gabby is in the background. The Camera was mostly on Peter Moon with the thumb pick.
Love this style, I found you by looking for reactions to it
Mahalo for watching 💕
Watching and hearing this made me miss my Dad so much!! He played slack key and I grew up on that music amidst the R&B, Rock and other genres of music out there. Mahalo nui for the memories.
Mexicans and south americans brought guitar to Hawaii because they came when hawaiians needed help ranching cattle. Also legends say the Spanish arrived in 1555. Which has been proven by spanish and french ship logs and maps.
Have you guys heard gabby sing? That’s a must do reaction too!!
Thank you for making a video of my Grampa. #kahahawai #pahinui
Gotta fact check previous comments; Person who mentioned about Kahahawai name, research the “ Macy Case”. Gabby was “hanae” by the Pahinui family. Peter Moon didn’t die a violent death, we went to visit him before he passed. He was in a coma, but very peaceful looking. As for Peter Jr., he’s fine and well. As for Peter not letting your dad go to the hospital, Peter would not be that heart-less to do such a thing.I know Peter,Peter Jr. and I have history with the Pahinui ohana. Happy New Year, Margaret MacDonald Pahinui
The Spaniard cowboys brought over their guitars and the Hawaiian "Paniolo/Cowboy" picked up these guitars and slacked the strings to provide a lower tone to accompany their singing voices.
I play mostly in slack key myself and it is so simple to provide several tone levels to accompany my single voice.
GABBY #1.
It’s slack key a style of loosening the strings created in Hawaii where the guitar sounds so beautiful but it’s a little bit more soft on the fingers
Uncle Gabby, My great grandmother used to play music with him, he would come over to her house and have a Kanika pila session which means (lets play music) and by the way, this is what a pure blooded Hawaiian looked like, there were a lot more during those days. we are a dying breed. awesome to see someone react to his music!
Why uh lie ? Is how to pronounce Waialae. Gabby is an absolute legend in Hawaiian music and is one of the if not the central figure in what was called the Hawaiian renaissance in the 70s. Peter is also a Hawaiian institution, Cane Fire and Guava Jelly are two of his best known songs. Gabby's kids were all good musicians and had a band together at one time, a couple of them pursued careers as professional musicians, including Bla who was a great guitar player in his own right. Bla had a big hit in Hawaii with his song Come And Go With Me, he also played a right-handed guitar left-handed, but with the strings upside down in the right-handed position, because, as a kid he had to learn on his dads' guitar, Gabby was right-handed. Dick Dale Is another guitarist that plays a guitar in that configuration. Brada Iz - Israel Kamakavivo'ole (kah mah kah veevo olay) pays tribute to Gabby at the start of his world-famous cover of Somewhere Over The Rainbow when he says, "kay, this one's for Gabby" The video has received over 1.2 billion views and is widely considered the best version ever done. A fantastic song by another great, well known Hawaiian artist is, Magic Planet by Brother Noland, (Noland Conjugation). Either of the three (Bla, Iz, Noland) or all, would provide a great reaction. If you haven't heard any later Dick Dale, his song Nitro is a ripper with a great video. Thanks for checking out Gabby !!!
One thing I love is the respect you guys show towards my family 🥰 ik it’s weird to claim but this would be my great grandfather’s brother my last name is Rosecrans but since my family split up he was adopted under the Pahinui family
🙏
Try jealousy by maoli tysm for sharing this video we live on the same street as the pahinui family in beautiful waimamalo.....
Gabby and Peter Moon...legends from the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970s...Kanikapila!! NO BETTER decade of Hawaiian local music of the day!! Kalapana, Cecilio and Kapono, Olomana, Country Comfort, Sunday Manoa...how lucky to have grown up in that era!! IMUA!!

If you want to hear more slack key then try the band HAPA
What we have here is Hawaiian Therapy….
why-uh-lie lol :)
"W" in Hawaiian is pronounced as a "V" ex: Hawaii is Ha-Va-ii. However, most locals don't do the "V" exchange. Hawaiian is a dying language. I was born and raised in Hawaii.
Try Hank III - Smoke and Wine!
I actually know/love that song!
@@JustinPanariello its one of my favorites! I think it would be a good introduction for your wife! If she doesn't already know it
@@SgtSaint420 she doesnt.. and yes!
You guys are killing me with the Olelo Hawai'i pronunciation! Are you local?! And, if so, you're just discovering Gabby? Auwe!
no we're not local
@@JustinPanariello Kay den! I was confused by your Wife's comment that there was a Country Club near you called Waialae which would suggest you live in Honolulu.
Good job pronouncing 1:49
Peter Moon was a rich jeweler, and he died a horrible death in a very long coma. And the son had to deal with monetary predators. ~ My dad missed my birth because he said he was at band practice with Peter Moon and Peter wouldn't get my dad leave rehearsal. hmm.
Wye. Ah Lye
its pronounced WHY- AH- LIE
Why lie…why a lie = Wai`alae. Not vai a lae. Lol
Cheee uncle gabby hawaiian hof
prounounced WHY A LIE
My Grampa Gabby is Maui royalty descended from war Chief hero of Maui Kahahawai. That generation changed their names from Kahahawai to Pahinui because the United States government was genociding our family in 1932. They burnt down Lahaina because the US military SAID they were going to kill us all, the descendants of the last Chiefs of Maui.
Aloha Kamaka!
Slack key plays by ear not lessons.
Why I lie
Y a lie
