My late fiancé studied abroad for a semester in Johannesburg. He told me stories of having to keep several locks on his door/windows and never going out after dark.
The idea that you could be locked up snug as a jewel in an iron box and yet be attacked by the people you trust and love the most is a pretty terrifying one to me.

Women who have low self esteem and who will settle for the dregs of society. With a prisoner, they can have more status and importance, at least until the guy gets out of prison.
Plus, if the guy will never get out, they can have this "romance" that never gets ruined by actually having to deal with the other person from day to day

Also from South Africa. Good to see all the South Africans here! I have worked a lot with drug addicts and come across some horrific crimes committed by teenagers some as young as 14 years old who have had severe brain damage from meth ('tik' in South Africa). None of them had any memory of the crimes they had committed but certainly showed signs of drug induced psychosis. All very tragic. Either Van Breda had undiagnosed signs of narcissism, and other psychiatric conditions exacerbated by meth or his abuse was severe enough to have caused this episode of violence. A huge tragedy for all.

i enjoy it almost daily as well. He's developed a versatile and concise format that makes for interesting listening. I do find it interesting how he has clearly leaned into the true crime genre more recently, while his earlier videos from 2-3 years ago were broader in the subjects they would cover. Based on how well he's currently doing, I'd guess that was a great creative decision.

@@genuineimitation8799 That's too bad he's made some mistakes in his videos. It does happen, we're all human. Luckily his videos are not fundamentally about research, like a History channel might be. He deals primarily with true crime now where the facts are typically well known.
And the crux of his channel is about his personal opinion/speculation (which he makes clear every time) where he uses his knowledge as a Dr. (of psychology or psychiatry, not sure) to assess a person and/or relationship/situation. And it's for entertainment, he's not testifying or treating someone, so occasionally making research mistakes isn't a big deal, thankfully.

What I found suspicious while editing a book about this case was the call to the police. If you are familiar with security systems in South Africa there should be immediate questions. Even a standard alarm system does not call through to the police. The South African police is too slow to react. Every security company has a call centre and every home fitted with an alarm and security system not only has alarm triggers, but panic buttons. You will find these buttons spread through the house and perhaps on a key holder. This home was fitted with such a system. Pressing that button would prompt a very fast reaction from an armed reaction unit close by - in this case in the complex - even closer. So, you almost never would call the police in an emergency situation - even for an ambulance - you would press that button. That way they know who is calling and would be on their way before you even have to pick up the phone. Henri had ample opportunity to activate the alarm in various ways, but never did. If there were "perpetrators" in the home, the alarm going off would probably have scared them away. Henri decides to do nothing of that. He claims to be passed out... he wakes up... still no panic button - no need for help to come immediately.
