Do a pay comparison between an owner operator a lease operator and a owner operator with there own authority.... that would be really interesting and very useful information to all truck drivers and help us decide which would be the best route to take as owner operators
Your honesty make you my favourite trucking channel and if you continue on this lane you will be the biggest and best trucking channel in North America. Thank you for all you do !
marvelous video and what today's drivers need to see esp newbies..what the lowest Driver would make compared to a lease of same because you start low then grow in this business
Ronan, what did the lease operator pay for income tax? You HAVE to put that number out and subtract it from the lease ops' take home pay, because you've done so with the company driver. It's not really an accurate comparison without figuring income tax for both.
I will do a separate video Each driver is different I might need only 40K to live while someone else needs 80K But I will go into detail when I do that video. Thanks for the comment Happy New Years.
exactly what i said to myself .... where's the income taxes on that lease operator ?? so i guess we can say the company driver made around $102k and the lease operator around $117k gross on that year . not a big difference between the 2 amounts . so in my opinion it's not really worth it to lease BUT lease purchase option is a different story since the truck is gonna be yours after a certain amount of years . leasing only is pretty much paying for that company truck ... company ain't paying nothing ... you pay the repairs and after the 3 years ( in this case ) you give the truck back with all new parts you paid .

Thank you for the video! It's yet another example of why I like this channel so much. Hard numbers from a transparent company are extremely helpful for those of us weighing the differences between the two options. Tax situations can vary, but since the potential refund was discussed, we should try taking how much is paid into them to begin with into consideration. After all, the final, money-in-the-bank income is the most important figure. I suspect ET doesn't handle the yearly taxes for lease operators, and therefore you would not have access to those exact numbers. Theoretically, including tax burden, the lease operator is probably netting closer to $90,000-$95,000. It's still an advantage, but feels like a lot of extra risk for a relatively minor reward. Other factors need to come into play at that point. How important is it to have your own business, with the freedoms and responsibilities that come with it? Do you have pride in owning your own truck, or plan on trying to keep it after it's paid in full? Do you have the capabilities to manage a budget and balance the books (be honest with yourself)? Do you have enough cash in reserve for unexpected problems?
@@NorthAmerican-Trucking-News yea that’s paying 12% off each load and $250 week for cargo insurance. Had 20k in repairs this year and last year. Might be time to buy a new truck. im from hamilton ontario and almost done my first year trucking and these guys are rock stars to me ... hey buddy can you make a video on investing in trucks as an owner instead of being a driver
Not to mention that the lease purchase driver also has equity in the vehicle with his payments upon successful completion of the contract.. so one could generalize and safely say twenty to thirty per-cent of the payments made that year will be equity..
I guess the lease driver doesn't have to pay his income taxes and other taxes that the company drive pays. Because the "gross" for the company diver is not much less than the "gross net" of the lease truck.
I'm from kitchener Ontario, I have been in the trucking business since 1994. I have driven triaxle dump trucks, owned hwy tractors and worked for 2 trucking companies... 1 of which was bought out by fastfrate of toronto back in 2007 and was just laid off from Loblaw cambridge maplegrove DC in march of 2021. I'm currently driving city transit. Decided to get out of trucking all together just cause of the numerous shady companies out here and uncertainty... I would love to get back into trucking, but transit is a secure great pay, benefits and pension... I would like to say your channel is given me some faith in getting back in. So your owner operators are making $1.47/mile? Or is that for the lease operators? If so what are the owner operators making per mile? Thank you
Lease operator made 128,500$ after expense. It was not net. The net income would come after taxes. Why didnt mentioned taxation on those 128k? After taxes he would probably be close or slightly ahead of the company driver. Plz correct me if am wrong
Thanks for these videos. Absolutely want to see the break down of flatbed lease operator video. Seriously considering making the move. 23 years driving under my belt and have looked into ET as a high candidate to do so.
So $91455 yearly = $ 7621 per month with 12 hours a day with 1 day off in week so 12 hours working 25-26 days in a month which is 300-312 hours in a month so hourly around $ 24- 25$ per hour, is still not good
I only see $60k in HST reimbursable expenses, where is the other 40k ? What else can we get HST back for? Also, the lease operator still has to pay income tax, cpp, EI on that NET you listed no? ( I understand that it's not on the entire amount if it's a corporation)
After taxes, the lease operator makes about the same. Difference is equity. Or as he mentioned wealth. The idea is you buy the truck at the end of the lease. And that’s where the wealth or equity comes in. You’ve invested in your future. All at the same as a company driver. But a $3,000 raise a month after purchase. You can’t get that kind of raise in 20 years as a company driver. Yes you start saving some of that for a future investment in equipment but it’s giving you wealth until then.
I understand al of the tax implications and the like. However, if I am going to be an owner-operator, why would I want to be tethered to ONE trucking company? In this era of truck driver shortages, it would be advantageous to the driver to forego some of the shipments to headache customers in favor of more profitable loads. Also, in a period of low freight volume, doesn't the trucking company have an interest to steer the majority of the loads to their company drivers as opposed to the owner-operators?
I agree. I am an O/O in the US. By comparison I made net $184,072.21 on 72,917miles or $2.52+/mile in 2021. The numbers that are mentioned in this video in my opinion are utterly pathetic. By running under my own authority I have more options. The numbers tell the story. I literally made 218% more per mile in 2021 than this lease operator.
@@tennesseetrucker1921 What is even more disturbing is that the numbers cited are in Canadian dollars (0.78 US) and that GTA is one of the most expensive markets to live in North America. Ten years ago, my drivers were making US $80k AND making it home almost every weekend (48-50 weeks). What trucking companies, Uber and the like all count on is the ignorance of their employees. If the employees could even do basic analysis on a spreadsheet, they would know that they are not getting as great a deal as they think. As a retired CPA (and corporate controller), I would strongly advise that independent truckers hire a CPA for a few hours and actually discuss how to maximize their income. BTW, TT, I give you credit that you know your numbers.
@@jlawrence0181 In my opinion we should throw the Canadian truckers out of the US market, if they are going to under cut us by that much! @@tennesseetrucker1921 You have the advantage as an independent to be able to take off a few days to avoid bad weather or to take some days off for family functions. I do not think that most company drivers would have that option. On another note, the one GOOD thing about this video is that all drivers should be driving in a manner that minimizes fuel consumption. Have a great year.
Lol Definitely agree with Brian’s Microphone. Good luck finding a good carrier Make sure u read reviews and talk to drivers within the fleet. Best of luck
Hey Ronen. When converting from US dollars to Canadian when is the conversion done? Is it the rate at the time of the transaction or when the statement is produced? Can make a difference, especially on the fuel. Keep these videos coming. Great info for the guys/girls in our industry.
Hey Ronan! Thanks for this wonderful information that you've shared so far, I really appreciate your effort on bring this information to us. Do you have any idea on joining the trucking industry in CA or US from Nigeria?
Good content here. Not sure about taxes to be paid for the lease operator though? I know it varies largely but that seems to be where I’m confused at with that
Hey Ronen, what happens to the portion of Tax that this driver paid on his bills for tyres, repairs, parts etc? Will he get to take an input of these taxes when he files his annual tax returns?
How can I work with you, guys. I have a Freightliner DD15 Cascadia Evolution 2018. I also have a Grand Dane 2016 Dry Van with a lift, capable of lifting up to 3200lbs.
I’m really thinking about going to the next step in my career. I have a great job now where I’m home every day off weekends and make rt at 6 figures a year. I’m actually thinking of getting a truck my own Authority and just putting a driver in the truck. I want to keep my job that way I’m not taking money from my company as I try to start building it. I eventually would like to be a fleet owner. Do you all have any advice??
I've been an O/O for 30 years now here in the US. My advice to you is pay cash for the truck and have a minimum of $40,000 cash in reserve before considering doing this. Trucking is a cash intensive business and a quick way to go broke is to be under funded. The numbers that are mentioned in this video in my opinion are utterly pathetic. $116,732 on 147509 miles is .79c/mile. By comparison, I made NET $184,071.21 on 72917 miles or $2.52/mile. I own my own truck and 2 trailers running under my own authority.
@@arsenix2026 check the video. He plainly stated the lease operator made $116,732 on 147,509 miles. Keep in mind that's in Canadian dollars which presently is worth around .78cents US dollars. equating to ALMOST .62cents/mile US. And that's in a year when trucking is booming. THAT is definitely NOT a good deal for the lease operator. You really need to understand the freight market better. While it was a professionally made video, the numbers he's touting are utterly lousy. I suggest you reference DAT trendines for national averages. The present national average for reefer freight in the US is $3.58/mile, which is more than TWICE what this operator is grossing per mile. Two things are possibly occurring here, 1)the company is making a killing off of this lease operator's ignorance, and 2)the company is what I refer to as a freight WHORE, preying on the ignorance of drivers. Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
@@tennesseetrucker1921 absolutely true ...this guy is terrible ...but who are we to judge? He got suckers for followers 🤣 .... I run a total 32K miles all year, grossed $160K .... With a 7K truck & 15k reefer ...
@@vroor32 Amen brotha!! evidently there are lots of idiots in Canada who don't know any better. More importantly we need to keep these morons out of the US so they Do not drive down wages.
I noticed the fuel amount was very low. $10,000? No way. At 7.5 mpg, 18,354 gals. @ an average of $2.75 per gal. is $50,473.50. Now take another $40k off of the $128,500. It's funny how so many wannabe O/Os will be talked right around the fine print...lol.
We have 2018 freightliners in the company that I drive for. Seems like they are always in the shop for something. I'm shocked at the low amount of cost that they came up with.

Good content here. Not sure about taxes to be paid for the lease operator though? I know it varies largely but that seems to be where I’m confused at with that
I think I need to do a separate video on Taxes
Another great video thank you very much👍
U are very welcome
Hey Ronen, what happens to the portion of Tax that this driver paid on his bills for tyres, repairs, parts etc? Will he get to take an input of these taxes when he files his annual tax returns?
Very informative, thank you!
U are welcome
Appreciate the positive feedback

@@tennesseetrucker1921 $91,500 is the company driver making 147,509 miles btw . he did not mention lease operator miles .
There was $51,000 in US fuel as well, $10,000 was just in Canada
All thumbs up, love the numbers.
Thank u
Much appreciated
Thanks for the video!
U welcome
Do you have a non border crossing drivers in USA that only do runs in the states?
Happy new year 🙏🏻
Happy New Years
Glad u enjoyed.
And thank u for the fist Like.
We have 2018 freightliners in the company that I drive for. Seems like they are always in the shop for something. I'm shocked at the low amount of cost that they came up with.
