Cuba only opened it’s private sector last year, and it’s still poor from everything being public. Laos doesn’t have a private sector and it’s still as poor as it was back then. Iran’s also sanctioned by the USA since 1987, was the most sanctioned country in the world until Russia beat it in it’s invasion of Ukraine, and yet it’s GDP per capita is above the world average

Because of US embargo, Cuba is poor and even can’t use US dollar for trading. On the other hand, Vietnam and China are doing alright.
