If they listed indie games as self-published games, the list would be consistant of, like, 3 good games and some asset flips on steam to fill the page lmao. Almost every indie studio is working with publishers these days. There are punlishers specialized in indie games. I don't know, maybe your definitin is like "games made by studios that aren't owned by publishers but just work with them on a specific game is indie" which would be fair
Larian Studios has around 450 employees with 6 different locations and made a game under Wizards of the Coast, owners of Dungeons and Dragons. Baldur’s Gate is GOTY but it is by no means “indie” lol

Funniest thing about this 10th anniversary of The Game Awards is that Hogwarts Legacy was nominated as one of the most anticipated games of 2023 on last year’s Game Awards to get no nominations for a single award this year.
It was doomed to be snubbed the minute Twitter, Reddit and the media started crying about it. Although I don't think it's on the same level as games such as Baldur's Gate 3, I find it ridiculous that it wasn't nominated for anything. It at least deserved a mention in categories such as Best Art Direction thanks to the amazing work that went into bringing Hogwarts Castle to life.
Which is completely deserved to be quite honest. It's an incredibly mid game riding entirely on the IP. It would have been completely forgettable if it weren't for the branding.

imo Destiny 2 should be completely disqaulified from the "best community support" moving forward, and replaced with Halo infinite for this year for the simple act of bungie axing the community support team, that right there is evidance enough theres no community support to be rewarded. and ya i say this as a former destiny fan, i quit the game less then a month after lightfall's release, decided to make it permanant shortly after season of the deep released with all those server issues, and so ive not played at all since march.

People will argue about this game deserving to win GOTY or that game deserving to win GOTY, but what they don't realise is that caring about The Game Awards in any capacity means that you've already lost. The event is trash on principle, and people are stupid for caring. It's feeling validated because a bunch of IGN reviewers dressed up and read some milquetoast gaming opinions into a microphone. The only good part about them is the trailers, like when they used to announce new Smash characters in between awards.
Underrated, even AC6 is a gameplay oriented game with the gameplay variety to create and replayability (routes & NG+) edit: was it dynamic narrative since AC6 routes has outcome and consequences?
The fact Hi-fi rush is on any of these runner-ups makes me incredibly happy it was such a good game, not anything crazy but a throwback to when companies cared
Baldur's gate is to good I have 13 characters and I've found brand new secrets on each playthrough. Every playthrough has such variation depending on the tiniest of choices all the companions feel alive and the co op is hilarious and fun
If you haven't tried it yet there's also further variations if you pick origin characters. Shadowheart origin feels like an expansion to the base game.

Im so glad people love FF16's score because they used the same producer Yoshi P and the main musical writer writes for FF14 the mmo- the team deserves so much love. Especially the music writer Masayoshi Soken, so I really hope ff16 wins because not only would that be huge for him as a composer but also after his battle with cancer as well-. Big La Hee :)

I don't think so at all. TOTK is going to win and its not even going to be close. The only other game that has a chance is BG3 but lets be real that game was good but way overrated by diehard CRPG fans and it launched with a ton of issues and still has a ton of issues. For a game with so many bugs to get so many 10s I just can't help but feel Larian bought a few reviews for sure.

Near-perfect games got released on PC but were never heard of by console players, who were only used to Nintendo and Sega and Playstation. PC gaming was popular in nerd circles, but this was still the era where nerds were not popular, and the internet was young enough that even the most basement-y of nerds sometimes had to go to literal shops in the real world to hunt down the parts needed to build high-end gaming PCs. My 5-disc BG1 crashed our brand-new Gateway 2000 dozens of times... generic household PCs were simply not at pace with an N64 or PS2 for the average teenager to spend time gaming. Even one of the most highly praised games of all time which is from that era, Planescape: Torment (the best book I ever played), is known of by like 10% of modern gamers, most of them only through seeing it pop up on Best Games lists, and even after an enhanced edition its Steam average completion rate is hilariously low. It's sad to see. Anyways, for all their praise in antiquity, hopefully some people will give them a chance now who always heard they were good but never actually had the chance to give them a try.

BG3 is a game that makes other game developers scared because of how good it is with no microtransactions, and no DLC. It literally stands on it’s own by developers that really do care about their audience. 100% agree with Charlie 💯
It's great cus it itself is a crpg and considered an immersive sim, even it's dynamic narrative alone offered gameplay replayability and variety. its a game that respect player's existence with how the world I affected by players choice. It's underappreciated even in Elden Ring. Edit: ain't surprize if a crpg game didn't win, seeing how niche a crpg is with how overwhelming it is for people with short attention span.
Ive never played XIV but the score that Masayoshi Soken put together for XVI was absolutely phenomenal. For me the one thing that Final Fantasy always nails is the score and Soken lives up to that trend. I hope when it comes out on PC you'll have the chance to enjoy it!
Also Charlie giving props to Vitality's RLCS team is very staisfying to hear. A top 8-12th in Vitality, coming in the very last split, winning all 3 regionals, and winning major, then winning worlds, making history being the first team in 8 years to win everything. Crazy team.
Honestly, Lies of P was absolutely amazing, i love Bloodborne it’s my fav FromSoftware game and Lies of P gave me that same feeling that Bloodborne did, I wish it got more nominations but oh well
@@HellomehungryBloodBorne is and has been my favorite FromSoft game since it was released, try Lies of P, it is very worth it. Feels like a mix between BloodBorne atmosphere and darkness, and Sekiro parry timing, it’s super nice. And the dodge is very BloodBorneesque.
Wish I could play BG3 again for the first time again, two playthroughs through now but nothing will ever beat that first time. FF16 had the best music imo

I choose Totk, but I really understand why people pick baulders gate 3. I’ve never finished it the game goes really deep into so many options and choices and I love those type of games. I’ve played spiderman 2 it was fun but after the story there’s not that much stuff to do and there’s not that much side missions to keep you entertained honestly. I choose TOTK because you can spend 100 hours on it and never get bored so much stuff to do and create and explore it’s honestly amazing

Haven’t played any of these, cuz i’m poor, but i’m a DND player and I can safely say that Baldur’s Gate 3 deserve the win to begin with. Add the fact that everyone loved it and made realize to the gaming community that: “yes, fantastic games still exists, and we can still push the standards” and you got a genuine win in every way Edit: now we only need the categories for: best music score for games and worst game of the year
BG3 will not beat TOTK. It launched with a ton of issues and still has a ton of issues. Not too mention, you D&D fans overrated it to the frickin moon. its ok but not that great. Its combat is slow, dull, and unfair in favor of enemies. The dice roll mechanic is obnoxious and you lose way more than you win and here comes the reload and try again BS. The story is a convoluted mess and not that interesting. The characters are mostly annoying. The world design is just basic. The music was generic. I mean a 7 would be a fair score but for a game with so many issues to get so many 10s I feel like Larian bought a few scores there for sure. Its an ok game, but the best? Not even close. It shouldn't even win RPG of the year. That should go to FFXVI, Sea of Stars, or Star Ocean 2 R. All three were better and didn't have a metric fuck ton of issues at launch.
3:30 is the only thing I needed to hear. FF16 was my GOTY after Titan Lost and my favourite game of all time after I finished it. I'm sad it didn't make the GOTY nominees, but nothing has it beat in Best Score 4:30 as well. Ben Starr SMASHED the competition!

Hi-Fi Rush got snubbed for GOTY if I’m honest. On a less bias note: The indie category only Sea of Stars and Pizza Tower are actual indies. The rest worked with Publishers and Dave the Diver is done by an studio owned by a korean conglomerate. In the Esport coach, they put someone that called them out for not being a coach this year.
I wonder if Jedi Survivor hadn't released with bugs, crashes and extreme performance issues, if it could have at least be nominated for goty. The game has insanely good mechanics, fun lore and it's a blast to play... When or if it works properly which is only like 5% of the time

If we’re talking player choice in story based games, it’s most definitely impressive, but breath of the wild did it before anything else and tears of the kingdom perfected it.
The fact that all of the GOTY nominees were fantastic goes to show how great of a year this was. There's usually always one outlier with each year (Deathloop in 2021, for example. Not a bad game, but definitely not GOTY material).

BG3 is refreshing coming from a niche crpg genre and an immersive sim for its D&D elements yadayada dynamic writing/narrative. TOTK an amalgamation of openworld and a mix subgenre of sandbox elements.
I will be happy if either BG3 or TOTK wins. That being said I voted for TOTK. I have loved every second of BG3 but I can't ignore the emotions TOTK made me feel
Armored core was absolutely robbed. I get its the mech genre is still pretty "niche" but it deserved to nominated for best music bare minimum. Steel Haze Rusted Pride is phenomenal. It deserved to be nominated for best audio design but that category is pretty stacked. Alan Wake 2, Dead Space Remake, and RE 4 Remake have some godly audio design. Only category I genuinely sat there for a moment thinking about what deserved the award more.
Armored core 6 wasn't really anything that special. Great story and fun game, but relatively short without the post game, customization and builds weren't balanced. It was fun for about a month, bur after NG++ and getting all the parts, not real much substance to go back. Pvp feels like elden ring, reskins of people using the same guns.
So glad Charlie recognized FFXVI and its amazing voice acting (especially Ben Starr) as well as its music. What a phenomenal game, and honestly such a good year in general for single-player gaming. I'm happy

BG3 is my GOTY. Because it got people who weren't into playing D&D dice rolling turned base type of games, to actually play it. I even gotten to the lore more thanks to BG3. 10/10 would drop a building on Astarion again to get that wonderfully acted scene by Neil Newbon. 😂

Funniest thing about this 10th anniversary of The Game Awards is that Hogwarts Legacy was nominated as one of the most anticipated games of 2023 on last year’s Game Awards to get no nominations for a single award this year.
I didn't play it but without a doubt it looked like the best HP game. The problem with that is the bar is buried in the floor with that standard.

It was doomed to be snubbed the minute Twitter, Reddit and the media started crying about it. Although I don't think it's on the same level as games such as Baldur's Gate 3, I find it ridiculous that it wasn't nominated for anything. It at least deserved a mention in categories such as Best Art Direction thanks to the amazing work that went into bringing Hogwarts Castle to life.
Which is completely deserved to be quite honest. It's an incredibly mid game riding entirely on the IP. It would have been completely forgettable if it weren't for the branding.

All of them had incredible voice acting, but Asterion felt like he was really there in that time period, dude absolutely NAILED that performance ngl.
Him and Amelia (the narrator) along with many other VA’s did an incredible job. I’m playing it solo and probably won’t play it with others until my second playthrough.

The event is trash on principle, and people are stupid for caring. It's feeling validated because a bunch of IGN reviewers dressed up and read some milquetoast gaming opinions into a microphone.
The only good part about them is the trailers, like when they used to announce new Smash characters in between awards.

Baldur's gate is to good I have 13 characters and I've found brand new secrets on each playthrough. Every playthrough has such variation depending on the tiniest of choices all the companions feel alive and the co op is hilarious and fun

I don't think so at all. TOTK is going to win and its not even going to be close. The only other game that has a chance is BG3 but lets be real that game was good but way overrated by diehard CRPG fans and it launched with a ton of issues and still has a ton of issues. For a game with so many bugs to get so many 10s I just can't help but feel Larian bought a few reviews for sure.

Having spent 2 decades trying in vain to convince my friends that the Baldur's Gate series was one of the greatest of all time, and falling on deaf ears... it's been awesome to see the love BG3 has been getting from every corner of the internet this year.

Back then, PC gaming was very niche compared to today. Near-perfect games got released on PC but were never heard of by console players, who were only used to Nintendo and Sega and Playstation. PC gaming was popular in nerd circles, but this was still the era where nerds were not popular, and the internet was young enough that even the most basement-y of nerds sometimes had to go to literal shops in the real world to hunt down the parts needed to build high-end gaming PCs. My 5-disc BG1 crashed our brand-new Gateway 2000 dozens of times... generic household PCs were simply not at pace with an N64 or PS2 for the average teenager to spend time gaming.
Even one of the most highly praised games of all time which is from that era, Planescape: Torment (the best book I ever played), is known of by like 10% of modern gamers, most of them only through seeing it pop up on Best Games lists, and even after an enhanced edition its Steam average completion rate is hilariously low. It's sad to see.
Anyways, for all their praise in antiquity, hopefully some people will give them a chance now who always heard they were good but never actually had the chance to give them a try.

The amount of games I knew and played in last years game awards is DRASTICALLY different from the games today.
BG3 is a game that makes other game developers scared because of how good it is with no microtransactions, and no DLC. It literally stands on it’s own by developers that really do care about their audience. 100% agree with Charlie 💯

Ive never played XIV but the score that Masayoshi Soken put together for XVI was absolutely phenomenal. For me the one thing that Final Fantasy always nails is the score and Soken lives up to that trend. I hope when it comes out on PC you'll have the chance to enjoy it!
Also Charlie giving props to Vitality's RLCS team is very staisfying to hear. A top 8-12th in Vitality, coming in the very last split, winning all 3 regionals, and winning major, then winning worlds, making history being the first team in 8 years to win everything. Crazy team.
Honestly, Lies of P was absolutely amazing, i love Bloodborne it’s my fav FromSoftware game and Lies of P gave me that same feeling that Bloodborne did, I wish it got more nominations but oh well

@@HellomehungryBloodBorne is and has been my favorite FromSoft game since it was released, try Lies of P, it is very worth it. Feels like a mix between BloodBorne atmosphere and darkness, and Sekiro parry timing, it’s super nice. And the dodge is very BloodBorneesque.

I choose Totk, but I really understand why people pick baulders gate 3. I’ve never finished it the game goes really deep into so many options and choices and I love those type of games. I’ve played spiderman 2 it was fun but after the story there’s not that much stuff to do and there’s not that much side missions to keep you entertained honestly. I choose TOTK because you can spend 100 hours on it and never get bored so much stuff to do and create and explore it’s honestly amazing

Haven’t played any of these, cuz i’m poor, but i’m a DND player and I can safely say that Baldur’s Gate 3 deserve the win to begin with. Add the fact that everyone loved it and made realize to the gaming community that: “yes, fantastic games still exists, and we can still push the standards” and you got a genuine win in every way

BG3 will not beat TOTK. It launched with a ton of issues and still has a ton of issues. Not too mention, you D&D fans overrated it to the frickin moon. its ok but not that great. Its combat is slow, dull, and unfair in favor of enemies. The dice roll mechanic is obnoxious and you lose way more than you win and here comes the reload and try again BS. The story is a convoluted mess and not that interesting. The characters are mostly annoying. The world design is just basic. The music was generic. I mean a 7 would be a fair score but for a game with so many issues to get so many 10s I feel like Larian bought a few scores there for sure. Its an ok game, but the best? Not even close. It shouldn't even win RPG of the year. That should go to FFXVI, Sea of Stars, or Star Ocean 2 R. All three were better and didn't have a metric fuck ton of issues at launch.
Lies of P not being in the best action game category is definitely a blunder. Being titled as an RPG and competing with Baldurs Gate is suicide.

Hifi Rush was an amazing passion project - definitely game of the year for me.
3:30 is the only thing I needed to hear. FF16 was my GOTY after Titan Lost and my favourite game of all time after I finished it. I'm sad it didn't make the GOTY nominees, but nothing has it beat in Best Score

This year was very hard, I personally voted for TOTK because I havent fully played Baldur's Gate or Alan Wake enough to fairly vote on them. All three are masterpieces in their own write.

If we’re talking player choice in story based games, it’s most definitely impressive, but breath of the wild did it before anything else and tears of the kingdom perfected it.

The fact that all of the GOTY nominees were fantastic goes to show how great of a year this was. There's usually always one outlier with each year (Deathloop in 2021, for example. Not a bad game, but definitely not GOTY material).

BG3 is refreshing coming from a niche crpg genre and an immersive sim for its D&D elements yadayada dynamic writing/narrative. TOTK an amalgamation of openworld and a mix subgenre of sandbox elements.
I will be happy if either BG3 or TOTK wins. That being said I voted for TOTK. I have loved every second of BG3 but I can't ignore the emotions TOTK made me feel

TOTK starts out great and has good gameplay, but the "story" couldnt be more stale and shallow even if you tried.

Armored core was absolutely robbed. I get its the mech genre is still pretty "niche" but it deserved to nominated for best music bare minimum. Steel Haze Rusted Pride is phenomenal. It deserved to be nominated for best audio design but that category is pretty stacked. Alan Wake 2, Dead Space Remake, and RE 4 Remake have some godly audio design. Only category I genuinely sat there for a moment thinking about what deserved the award more.
Armored core 6 wasn't really anything that special. Great story and fun game, but relatively short without the post game, customization and builds weren't balanced. It was fun for about a month, bur after NG++ and getting all the parts, not real much substance to go back. Pvp feels like elden ring, reskins of people using the same guns.
So glad Charlie recognized FFXVI and its amazing voice acting (especially Ben Starr) as well as its music. What a phenomenal game, and honestly such a good year in general for single-player gaming. I'm happy

Lowkey crazy that charlie didnt even mention yuri lowenthalls performance in spiderman 2, that was genuinely some of the best voice acting ive seen in a good minute. Same for accessibility, but i get why he didnt choose it since he didnt really care all that much. But the setting for spiderman 2 actually did go crazy.
It’s a great performance but Starr as Clive in FF16 and Newborn as Astarion clear the rest of the competition heavily

I agree so much with Charlie here. Vitality's Rocket League run this last split was flawless and deserved to be nominated.

BG3 was the best game I've played this year, but holy shit AC6 was fantastic.
I’ve never enjoyed games like baldurs gate at all, however, I’ve put so many hours in to this already. That alone says a lot. It’s getting my vote for sure. There’s so much to do in it, it’s insane.
BG3 is my GOTY. Because it got people who weren't into playing D&D dice rolling turned base type of games, to actually play it. I even gotten to the lore more thanks to BG3. 10/10 would drop a building on Astarion again to get that wonderfully acted scene by Neil Newbon. 😂
