To be able to do slack key and play the harmonica and sing. One of a special breed. Heaven only sends one of you down every once in a while. Aloha to your soul.
This is the one song that changed this West Virginia hillbilly into an avid Hawaiian music fan. The poetry in this song just blew me away. There is no such beauty to be found in any other type of music that I have encountered. This is the pinnacle. Mahalo, Dennis, for introducing me to my love of Hawaiian music. Mahalo Jon for the wonderful videos. The sound quality is stunning. This is the BEST. Me ke aloha, Auntie Wanda
What a beautiful song. Don't even need to understand the words (but if you do, even better!), it's simply BEAUTIFUL. One of my favorite Hawaiian songs, so glad I just happened to find this on TH-cam 😀
Aloha Uncle....Although you are no longer suffering....I still weep that you have left here. Mahalo for everything you gave me and the whole world...showing by example on how to love one another.
Tonight Hawaii left a great slack key player, song-writer and singer. He took time out of his busy schedule a few years ago to let me interview him for my History of Hawaiian Music class. I offer condolences to all his family and friends. We will miss you!
Can't go wrong listening to anything that Dennis Kamakahi has ever done. Another classic video from Hisessions. Mahalo for all your hard work and professionalism.
The way you play and sing this beautiful song with such tenderness brings me to tears and fills my heart with sweetness. I don’t even know what the words mean. I see from the comments you are no longer walking the Earth but I feel your spirit. What a gift you’ve given to the world. Aloha and mahalo Uncle.
I'm almost 70 now, I cried with tears of joy when I first heard the Good Reverend sing this so long ago; tears still come today, something in the words, something in the music, all coming from this man's reflections on his inspiration for writing it calls me back to Hawai'i, calls me to come home. Ku'u lei aloha, you sing for Madam Pele now Dennis.
In Seattle WA now, but right back home in the Islands in my heart with HI SESSIONS and these performances. Mahalo Nui and Aloha to all that you all do at HI SESSIONS!!! Much appreciated!
Only just discovered this remarkable musician - only to discover he is playing his music o a different level of knowing and existence. Saddened but I know I can still listen to him here and in other places. Travel in the light dear and gentle soul.
I’ve always loved the beautiful melodic sound of this song! Thanks for the background on the song and the translation, Dennis! I want to attempt to learn the Hawaiian 🌺 words

When my wife and I first visited Hawaii 3 years ago, this was the first song I heard playing in the Kona airport and it just stuck with me and is my favorite Hawaiian song. A couple days ago, we were wrapping up our visit to Kauai with a boat ride up the Wailua River. They play live music and take requests (except for Tiny Bubbles). The singer seemed a bit perplexed when I requested this song, so I was worried they didn't know it. Turns out they were surprised I knew the song. When they finished playing it, he asked if I was from Hawaii. Then, he asked how I knew about it. I guess he is used to us haoles asking to hear Somewhere Over the Rainbow (which was the very next request).
Love it! Been playing this one with my boss every Friday morning jam session. I gonna break out my harmonica like this. So inspiring! Mahalo from Kaneohe!!!

So lucky to have seen him in October 2008 at Napili Kai, and Ledward in December 2017, such a blessing.
