The housing market is broken and we desperately need more homes. However people who have kids whom have left home should not be expected to give up homes that they have been in for many years. One thing I find extremely annoying is people whom move into one or two bed council /HA flats or houses and then produce lots of kids then complain that they are overcrowded and put their stories in the media. People have to take some responsibility in their lives and only bring kids into the world when they are in a position to do so.

Fair play to this mp for actually participating in a real, detailed discussion with the public. Wouldn't see that nowadays.

The answer is a new form of affordability. If you have a good credit record and can afford rent, then you should be able to afford a mortgage. But the banks only lend 4 1/2 times salary which just isn't enough for most people.

The government needs to stop trying to fix problems it created in the first place.

Developers are broken too. They built crap buildings. Crappy workmanship. Leaky damp homes and inadequate brickwork.

A landlord will pay three taxes. A private owner will pay two taxes. You do the maths. It's in the interest of the revenue to push for a renting culture.

Why don't we build more flats? We love in a tiny country yet insist on everyone living in a home.

In London there are too many flats, families want homes with gardens. Whereas in Cumbria, where I am from, there are only houses. Flats are pretty rare leading to people having to pay the bedroom tax (if it still exist, not sure). They have the right properties in the wrong place!

@@rosfow most European cities are 90% flats, they're much more efficient in terms of land usage. Europeans also tend to rent more too but have better rights.

@@lw3646 I'm not from a city. London I would say mainly has houses but social housing seems to have too many flats and not enough houses. There is a difference between the general housing stock and the social housing stock.

Rubbish, move to where you can afford...the longer you wait the hard it would be to get a mortgage. the problem is that everyone wants to live in London and are being extremely picky...unless you have the money to do so.. move out of London
