Alex Van Halen DOES NOT get the props he should. Such an overlooked talent. He’s the drummer. Eddie is the guitar. One of the best EVER! Then Michael Anthony on bass… and of course Diamond David Lee Roth vocals. You guys really need to familiarize yourself with Eddie, his talent, his Frankenstrat that he built himself, the brown sound…and on and on. Eddie can never be duplicated. He IS a legend. He was using tapping in songs, and all kinds of “ Fret “ tricks in his songs instead of just as a trick to show off in front of a crowd, like everyone else was doing. He actually USED it in his songs, so THEN, they had to figure out how to write that in music… how do you put a symbol for tapping when you’re writing music, ( or any other trick ) when that symbol doesn’t exist? So…basically a new type of writing was created. Because of Eddie. He changed music in a way. There is an interview on TH-cam, very recent interview, and he tells all about this. I couldn’t believe some of the things he’d done, created in music and guitars. He’s truly amazing, and there will be only 1. The interview was very interesting and informative. It would be cool to see you guys react to something like that. Or entire albums, or a live stream where you pick one or 2 artists and do nothing but their songs. It’s cool to see y’all delve deeper into a particular artist. Like Journey & Bob Seger. I totally enjoyed that!
1000% agree! But this song is all about Alex and Dave! Alex plays the most difficult shit to play in the history of drums. And Dave... is at his MOST "Dave" at this point! 😎💯 And you GOTTA love Dave without boundaries! Haha!
Yes! And let's not forget Alex's f*ckin' evil drums that are recorded to sound like a motorcycle engine at the intro! And Michael Anthony's bass holding' shit down like a fat monster tearin' shit up! Genius.
I know you guys love the lyric videos, but you’re missing so much by not watching the official videos! Some videos make you appreciate the song even more and also tell a story. Also, live videos help you appreciate the entertainer.
If you watch a video during a live stream, youtube will sometimes shut the reactor down so they have to be cautious and react to the audio only, particularly for their live streams. With that said, I agree they definitely need to check the video out later on. So entertaining.
Maybe you can watch the video while you just give us a picture so you won't get cut off or demonetized. Best of both worlds because most of us watching know the video.
The entire “1984” album is fire 🔥🔥🔥. Spawned four huge hits , and even the songs that didn’t get a lot of radio play , were fire. “I’ll Wait” is a song that a hip hop fan would love.
Whaddaya mean he played on 4 bass drums? Far as I know, the man only has two feet. The intro is triplets on the hands syncopated with shuffle doubles on the feet. Difficult to play (I can't do it) but not impossible on two kick drums/pedals...
@@rayzerbone4197 - Double bass pedals would do exactly the OPPOSITE of what you are describing...They put two beaters on a single drum, so four pedals would still only give you two drums... Double pedals on four drums would give you EIGHT bass drum pedals. 😂😂 Problem being, you still only have two feet. The SIX (not four) bass drums were used more for visual effect and as a jungle gym for D.L. Roth more than anything... They varied in tone but couldn't really add to a "beat" unless you're claiming that Alex fabricated some crazy pedal rig that strikes two drums out of sync with a single kick. John H. knows what he's talking about. It can be done on a single bass drum with a double kick pedal. Alex likely used two.
Eddie's guitar solo in this is genius level. How can you play notes so fast, and yet still create a melody that at times sounds so epic? oh yeah, shout out to Miss Tilley from high school 1985.
There are so many great guitarists out there but Eddie was untouchable, influencing countless guitarists but no one ever could truly replicate him. He was from another planet.
The original Van Halen here was - Edward Van Halen (guitar/keyboards), his brother Alex Van Halen (drums), Michael Anthony (bass/backing vocals) and David Lee Roth (lead vocals) ... In 1986 til 1996, Sammy Hagar was Van Halen's lead singer.
Child of the 60's and 70's here. Put yourself at that time in history, in 1984 when this album came out, after two decades of unbelievably awesome music, this album was yet ANOTHER reason to continue the ride of excellence we were on! So much great music all around back then, and they managed to kick it up a notch. Legend band.
8th grade year a substitute math teacher gave me 3 detentions in 1 class (which the real teacher doubled when she came back the next day) because of this song. It was completely unplanned but my buddy and me walked into class late and when the teacher said something about it, I don't know why it popped into my head but I looked up at the clock and used the lines, "Aww man, I think the clock is slow. I don't feel tardy." Everyone busted up laughing (detentions 1 & 2). Later in the class she wanted to know if anyone had any questions. My buddy raised his hand. When she called on him he said, "I brought my pencil. Now give me something to write on man." Everyone busted up again. I fell out of my chair I laughed so hard (detention 3). Great memory.
Eruption, You Really Got Me, Running With The Devil, Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love, And The Cradle Will Rock, Everybody Wants Some...it's the years from 78-81 I like the most.
One of my favorite songs from this band. Check out the official video. It's over the top. Like a young man's wants. Lol. You can see in the video they had a great time making it. A really good time kind of song. In around 4th grade, all the boys were so into Miss Fleischman. Gorgeous young woman, probably in her mid to late 20s. She broke our (boys) hearts when she said she was getting married! She brought her fiance onto class one day. If looks could kill, that man would have died a dozen or more. Lol. Great memories! Peace y'all!
I know 'Jump'... 'Panama' & 'Hot for teacher' were the big singles from Van Halen's '1984' album, but there some great tracks on the record - 'Drop dead legs' ... "I'll wait" ... 'Top Jimmy' ... 'Girl gone bad'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘
Love, love, LOVE this song. Alex Van Halen is an amazing drummer who is too often overlooked. Such talent. "I don't feel tardy' is my favorite line in this song LOL.
Also if you get a chance, even if it is on your own, you should watch the official video, as it is essentially what you both were speculating about at the end. It's funny, and over the top on purpose, but still captures the band's talent.
React to, Van Halen, You really got me, which is a cover of The Kinks song. Eddie Van Halen is the guitarist, his brother Alex on drums, Michael Anthony in bass and David Lee Roth on lead vocals
The video for this song explains it all!!! I was in middle school in 1984 (the name of the album), and every guy through high school and beyond loved this song!!
LOVE VAN HALEN ! her first albums ; all are great musiciens . DAVID LEE ROTH have a great voice , and EDDIE are one of the best guitariste in the world ; rest in peace , paix à son ame , merci Eddie . HELLO from FRANCE ;
I was 20 when this came out. I went down to Florida that spring with 4 other guys and we listened to this all the way down from Michigan. It was so great and we had such a great time. It always brings back some great memories.
I have seen them 5 times throughout the years, always a great show (David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar shows). So much talent in this band, so fun to see live. R.I.P Eddie!
So glad to see a whole new generation appreciate Eddie's/Van Halen's music. So hard to believe I will never see him perform again. Everyday I pick up my guitar, I'm always playing a VH tune.
In the now out of publication THE INSIDE MAGAZINE ( official independent fan magazine ) , there were interviews with some of the band's high school buddies that said the song was based on a teacher from their high school .
Oh, the drums. at the beginning..so much like an engine revving! 😎 That's how these young boys are. I really hope you watched the official music video! 🥰
He revolutionized guitar playing back in the late 70’s.when people listened to his Eruption Song.all I say all were blown away.WTF was this?Amazing Yeah people EVH RIP
The Drum solo that Alex started the sound with was a him simulating a Dragster Engine with the off beats being the firing notes of the engine. Awesome in concert.
The official video with the babe teacher is half of the fun of the song.
All Marks agree with this statement

As the saying goes, if I had teachers that looked like them when I was in school, I'd still be in school.

Alex is a beast on most tracks…definitely doesn’t get the praise he deserves!!!!
Alex Van Halen is one of the best Rock drummers of all time in my opinion!!!!!
Alex is easily in my top 10 rock drummers. He does not get the recognition he deserves.
For damn sure Alex is absolutely on fire as a drummer! This is my fav drum solo ever!

It’s a classic. And worth the watch.
This is one of Van Halen’s best songs. Period. The guitar, lyrics, David Lee Roth’s vocals it ALL comes together here! Fantastic choice!
and the video for this song is great.
And Alex on drums? This is his song!
one of the top 3 solos for me!

And the guitar from Eddies magic fingers in this ...
And those drums ...

I agree this is a great Halen album ("1984"), much better than the one before it ("Diver Down") which was mostly covers.
"I don't feel tardy" is my favorite lyric of any song EVER.
That look on Asia's face during the solo, priceless.
Alex Van Halen drum sets were crazy he played with 4 bass drums that’s how he gets those awesome beats
Watch a TH-cam video on how that drum intro is played. Impressive...
