I’ve got a story about this actually. Don’t have reddit so I’m just gonna post it in the comments. So I work at a grocery shop and its a normal busy day until this older married couple comes in. I start to ring up their items and the husband (H) puts a small gas bottle in front of me. We replace soda stream gas canisters for a discounted price if you bring back your old one, and this was the first time i had heard about this because we are only trained to ring things up. We learn everything else as we go. H: Replace this for me. Me: Uh, I’m pretty sure you will have to ask the front desk to do that. H: No. You can do it here. Me: Uh, let me go check... Now I’m on medication for anxiety so I’m not good with confrontations or anything like that. I pop over to an older coworker and ask her about it. Coworker: Yep. Its done at the front desk. So I head back to my register and tell H what my coworker had said. He just scoffs and angrily stomps towards the front desk, on the way stopping to speak to the older coworker. I see him get more upset but I can’t hear whats going on. He moves past her and goes up to the front. I’m still ringing up their items and the wife is giving me a sympathetic/ embarrassed look. Couple seconds later H comes back and says to his wife H: We’re going. And proceeds to pick up all the bags (they brought their own) and tip them upside down emptying all of its contents. I’m just standing there stunned. H: Fu*king c*nts And storms off with his wife and bags in tow. I start to tear up and the older coworker sees me crying so she comes over to comfort me. The next lady in the line also try’s to cheer me up. So my coworker pops up my ‘register closed’ sign and asks if i want her to take over the last customer for me. I politely decline and serve the next lady still slightly sobbing. The lady was very nice and made me laugh and feel so much better. If your out there thank you so much!! So I finish serving and head to the staff bathroom where I proceeded to cry for 10 minuets and then head down to finish my shift. When i get down, the older coworker has a bunch of flowers in her hand and says that a customer had bought them for me with the message ‘not all customers are bad’ Made my day a whole lot better and now i still have a chuckle with some coworkers about him. Still don’t know who bought me the flowers though, thank you though!! Have a nice day all

As someone with anxiety, I’m very proud of that cashier. I work in a very low intensity, low key environment, and even I get anxious when I have to deal with people sometimes. I have a lot of respect for people with social anxiety who work in retail

I once had an asthma attack because I ran to the store so I could make it before it closed. I was so embarrased when I couldn't stand up and leave because of my breathing. The awesome guy in the store give me water, paid my food (he already put the money away so I couldn't buy it, I of course paid him back later) and even escort me to home to see that I was okay. He was really a great guy (and still is, I hope). It was a really cold night (about -30c) and breathing is harder then. My mother went to thank him later haha.
RE: Grumpy old lady leaving behind her card... TL/DR: Don't be rude to staff, or a (sometimes) petty manager with a penchant for following rules to the letter, might decide to destroy your card... (This takes place in the UK, rules vary by country, and surprisingly few people know the rules, despite almost everybody thinking they do). Back when I was a retail manager I had more than a few people leave behind their payment cards. The "Standard practice" required by merchant services providers is to contact them, and report the card that has been mislaid by the customer. They will then ask you to destroy the card, before they contacted the card issuer, who will in turn contact the customer to arrange a replacement. Back then, a replacement could take up to 14 days. Generally my staff would keep an eye out and warn customers that they had not taken their card/put it down on the counter and forgotten it; but sometimes my staff didn't notice either. If a customer was well known (and liked) by my staff/me, their card would be safely stored. I'd contact the customer directly if I had their details (a lot of our customers had their details on file with us), and the card would be returned to them when they came back. If the customer was not known, but had been polite and well mannered, I'd usually give them until closing time to come back, or phone the store, before I contacted merchant services (keeping it safe until they could pick it up with appropriate ID). If the customer was rude to my staff or other customers, I would call merchant services immediately. On one occasion a customer had been extremely rude, accusing my (highly trained and knowledgeable) staff of being "Stupid", "Incompetent", and "Useless" (with a variety of expletives and (non-race related) slurs added in). I took over the sale part way through, to keep this vile person away from my staff members (I have always been very protective of my staff, but would generally serve such customers, providing they were not buying something where we would be providing after sales care. These kind of customers become more trouble than they are worth in after sales care situations). I knew the customer had left his card in the machine after I had rung up the sale; and I deliberately didn't warn him (I am comfortable with my actions). I waited until he had stepped outside the door (I might be petty, but I'm not evil for the sake of it) and was immediately on the phone to merchant services, with the card in my hand (on the shop floor). The customer came running back in before merchant services had even answered the call. Rather flustered, he shouted to one of my staff that he left his card behind. He was told that he would need to speak with me, but to wait, as I was on the phone. This person repeatedly tried interrupting me. I stood there, looking directly at him; the card in one hand, and the phone wedged between my ear and shoulder. My free hand being used to indicate that I would be with him shortly, and to stop trying to interrupt me. At the end of the phone call, I complied with the instruction given by merchant services to cut the corner off the card, making sure to cut through the magnetic stripe, thus destroying the card. (This was even more pleasing, as I was able to do this in front of him, looking him in the eyes whilst doing it - a not insignificant feat for an autistic adult that struggles with eye contact). Then I simply said "Yes sir, how may I help." Needless to say he raged out, but putting up with that was worth it. I informed him that I had no way to know who he was, and so couldn't take the responsibility of looking after the card he had left; and that I had to follow the instructions given by merchant services, on behalf of the card's owner (yes, referring to the "Card's owner" was just to be a pedant). Explaining, after his obvious reply, that "No sir, you do not own the card. It has always been the property of (issuing company), as per your contract, and this statement written on the back of the card." He did eventually leave, and I was quite satisfied that his disrespect of my staff members had been appropriately punished by my petty revenge. A complaint was made, but this was a small independent business and my actions were supported by the Managing Director (although he did comment that I could have handled it without destroying his card). I really related to the one with the confrontational old lady. I have Anxiety too and it's really nice to see someone like me getting the accommodations and acceptance they need.
The one about the old lady and the person having a panic attack made me cry. I have anxiety too and have had many anxiety attacks at work after dealing with rude customers or even coworkers. It's nice when management is at least nice about it. I've literally been bullied by coworkers before for having a panic attack so its nice to know that some people are understanding.
Listening to that story about the girl with anxiety made me feel really bad, but it also helped me realize something really important. I've been medically diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, but a lot of times I forgot what that actually entails. When other people yell at me I always feel like crying and I start getting really anxious, but I attribute it to just being a crybaby and not knowing what to do in confrontational situations. It may seem like a ridiculous, but this story made me realize that my anxiety makes me feel...anxious. Also, I think it was amazing that she was able to do exactly what she needed to do. She managed to stay calm enough to get through the interaction, she was able to take a break when needed, she was able to ask for help (someone to cover her shift), and after a break to let it out and cry she was able to come back to work. I want to be able to do that. Truly inspiring.
JSYK sometimes I listen to yours and others reddit videos in my car and having a transitional sound between the stories really helps me know that the story is over while I'm driving. So thank you very much for that ^^
I feel the person who got yelled at by old lady. I too have alot of anxiety, and are prone to panic attacks when yelled at due to ptsd and other reasons. This lady slapped me the other day because i “didn’t wring her up fast enough”. I was already having a bad day, and ended up having a full blown meltdown, and a coworker came and took over for me while another got me away from the situation, calming me down. The lady got arrested for assault and hate crime, as she had also commented on my race (im asian/russian hybrid- the asian shows through mostly though).

That story about that old lady and the cashier who has an anxiety disorder really pissed me off. I couldn’t believe it. I felt so bad for them. You don’t know what people are going through in their life currently or if they have a mental disorder like anxiety and that’s part of why you should always treat others the way you want to be treated.

I know a lot of ppl keep, oh so observantly, pointing out how you are not slazo. He and you have very different commentary and reactions and I really like both or you, so the variety makes the channel more interesting than the others that only have one person running the show. Oh man...the story of the old lady cussing the cashier out just hit me hard. I also work as a cashier, and when the first line of the old lady was read; my heart sped up so fast I thought I was the one being cussed out. 😂😂 trauma from the job? Lol
OMG a similar story to the women who faked her babies death happened to me. I worked at Nordstrom and this women walks up crying with like 5 pairs of $100 dollar jeans saying her boyfriend bought these for her and that she just found him in bed with her best friend. We have a bar code and every item purchased that can be scanned to ring up old purchases and nothing was coming up. The whole time i'm trying to figure it out she's crying and yelling about her boyfriend and how awful and abusive he was and how she lives in her car now. I told her I couldn't find them and she started getting angry saying she didn't want anything that was from him. A manager comes over and decides these pants were never purchased because they were perfect and she starts yelling how her boyfriend must've stole them and her tears are immediately gone btw. Turns out she grabbed 5 pairs of pants, started crying and walked up to me.
10:15 I had a similar experience....I asked if she needed a bag and she stayed silent through the whole transaction. I give her her reciepte...she demands to see my manager, proceed to tell him that I didn't offer a bag and that I was telling her all this gibberish (would you like to sign fod our program, new paper sale, etc.) and I was shaking and in tears...just shakily trying to tell her that I offered her a bag. Even announced she was never shopping there again...all over a plastic bag that she didn't ask or answer for. But I had the cool manager help me. He gave me a rewards card to enter a drawing for who gets a bonus on their check at the end of the month. Something snapped that day.... 18:07 At least she wanted to buy something. I had this person come in at closing at my last job, manager opens gate for them begrugingly and shows them the printers they were curious in. After staying open 30 mins after closing time, this customer doesnt buy anything and leaves.
I work at a gas station, in the middle of the night. And I always joke about this, but when someone gets mad you should listen to what they say. While it is not my goal that a customer gets upset, it is usually funny to hear whatever bs they come up with. And I can tell you this, 7 times out of 10 a customer will LITERALLY explain to you why you have to say no or refuse them, but say it as if somehow they're right and you're wrong because of that reason.
The baby one happened to me to once, a woman came in with like 15 boxes of baby powder and was pale as all hell. Came up to my coworker and gave her the story of ‘my baby died before we brought her home can I return these’ blah blah blah, our refund policy was that if you brought something back we would give you a full refund and a 20% off coupon but only if you had a receipt. So my coworker asks the woman if she had her receipt and she shook her head so my coworker clearly got distressed and said not to worry about it, due to audit checks we usually have to provide receipt numbers and dates of purchases but the computer would register a refund even without those things So this woman starts crying so my coworker puts the refund through and as the team leader of the store and the manager on her lunch break I used my code to authorise the refund. The woman walked out and walked past our store window where she was smiling and laughing with a friend, clearly happy about something, big change from mourning mother. I went into our office after finishing the line of customers both me and my coworker had and headed to the back office to check the CCTV. Clear as day, she was loading these baby formulas into a bag she’d brought and brought them to the till. Was especially horrible for me because I had recently miscarried and fell for her story and authorised the refund, I was so upset my manager spoke to me and allowed me to take the rest of my shift off, was a truly sickening feeling...
I usually try to have a supportive comment for retail workers when it's a holiday or that someone is rude to them. On occasions, I even buy them a snack or a patisserie when they seem particularly exhausted. That always gets me a funny reaction and a few butterfly in the stomach. Highly recommend it, even more if you're feeling down!
I'm always on data, but i have unlimited and it's about to have to turn it on and off when i leave since my phone hasn't figured out that I'm not an optimum customer anymore so it makes failed attempts to connect to WiFi and disrupts my Reddit and TH-cam binges
My house is in such a shithole that I hardly get any cellular signal inside the house, so I'm kinda forced to use WiFi. And even if I wasn't I still have unlimited mobile interned, so ez pz

I work at Stop and Shop, we had a lady who would come in 30 minutes before closing (which is midnight) and would keep the cashier, bagger, and supervisor nearly till 12:30 to 1AM. I think one of our managers talked to her about it because now she comes in at noon and is gone by 2PM

I too have had crippling anxiety. I have aspergers so confrontation was never good for me. Though I've sort of grown accustomed to it overtime and don't care anymore. It does however still get my heart racing a little and make me doubt myself at times

I was at a KFC once and a guy came in and ordered 10, 8 piece meals. When he got his order he demanded his money back saying that it had taken way too long and that it was required by law that a fast food restaurant deliver anything you order in less than 2 minutes. He called the police when they wouldn't give him the money back, when the police wouldn't help he said he was going to call corporate and have the place shut down because they didn't get him 80 pieces of fried chicken in less than 2 minutes and then refused to give him his money back.

Listening to that story about the girl with anxiety made me feel really bad, but it also helped me realize something really important. I've been medically diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, but a lot of times I forgot what that actually entails. When other people yell at me I always feel like crying and I start getting really anxious, but I attribute it to just being a crybaby and not knowing what to do in confrontational situations. It may seem like a ridiculous, but this story made me realize that my anxiety makes me feel...anxious. Also, I think it was amazing that she was able to do exactly what she needed to do. She managed to stay calm enough to get through the interaction, she was able to take a break when needed, she was able to ask for help (someone to cover her shift), and after a break to let it out and cry she was able to come back to work. I want to be able to do that. Truly inspiring.

I feel the person who got yelled at by old lady. I too have alot of anxiety, and are prone to panic attacks when yelled at due to ptsd and other reasons. This lady slapped me the other day because i “didn’t wring her up fast enough”. I was already having a bad day, and ended up having a full blown meltdown, and a coworker came and took over for me while another got me away from the situation, calming me down. The lady got arrested for assault and hate crime, as she had also commented on my race (im asian/russian hybrid- the asian shows through mostly though).

You don’t know what people are going through in their life currently or if they have a mental disorder like anxiety and that’s part of why you should always treat others the way you want to be treated.

OMG a similar story to the women who faked her babies death happened to me. I worked at Nordstrom and this women walks up crying with like 5 pairs of $100 dollar jeans saying her boyfriend bought these for her and that she just found him in bed with her best friend. We have a bar code and every item purchased that can be scanned to ring up old purchases and nothing was coming up. The whole time i'm trying to figure it out she's crying and yelling about her boyfriend and how awful and abusive he was and how she lives in her car now. I told her I couldn't find them and she started getting angry saying she didn't want anything that was from him. A manager comes over and decides these pants were never purchased because they were perfect and she starts yelling how her boyfriend must've stole them and her tears are immediately gone btw. Turns out she grabbed 5 pairs of pants, started crying and walked up to me.

I had a similar experience....I asked if she needed a bag and she stayed silent through the whole transaction. I give her her reciepte...she demands to see my manager, proceed to tell him that I didn't offer a bag and that I was telling her all this gibberish (would you like to sign fod our program, new paper sale, etc.) and I was shaking and in tears...just shakily trying to tell her that I offered her a bag. Even announced she was never shopping there again...all over a plastic bag that she didn't ask or answer for. But I had the cool manager help me. He gave me a rewards card to enter a drawing for who gets a bonus on their check at the end of the month.

At least she wanted to buy something. I had this person come in at closing at my last job, manager opens gate for them begrugingly and shows them the printers they were curious in. After staying open 30 mins after closing time, this customer doesnt buy anything and leaves.

I work at a gas station, in the middle of the night. And I always joke about this, but when someone gets mad you should listen to what they say. While it is not my goal that a customer gets upset, it is usually funny to hear whatever bs they come up with.
And I can tell you this, 7 times out of 10 a customer will LITERALLY explain to you why you have to say no or refuse them, but say it as if somehow they're right and you're wrong because of that reason.
The baby one happened to me to once, a woman came in with like 15 boxes of baby powder and was pale as all hell. Came up to my coworker and gave her the story of ‘my baby died before we brought her home can I return these’ blah blah blah, our refund policy was that if you brought something back we would give you a full refund and a 20% off coupon but only if you had a receipt.
So my coworker asks the woman if she had her receipt and she shook her head so my coworker clearly got distressed and said not to worry about it, due to audit checks we usually have to provide receipt numbers and dates of purchases but the computer would register a refund even without those things
So this woman starts crying so my coworker puts the refund through and as the team leader of the store and the manager on her lunch break I used my code to authorise the refund.
The woman walked out and walked past our store window where she was smiling and laughing with a friend, clearly happy about something, big change from mourning mother.
I went into our office after finishing the line of customers both me and my coworker had and headed to the back office to check the CCTV.
Clear as day, she was loading these baby formulas into a bag she’d brought and brought them to the till.
Was especially horrible for me because I had recently miscarried and fell for her story and authorised the refund, I was so upset my manager spoke to me and allowed me to take the rest of my shift off, was a truly sickening feeling...

I usually try to have a supportive comment for retail workers when it's a holiday or that someone is rude to them. On occasions, I even buy them a snack or a patisserie when they seem particularly exhausted. That always gets me a funny reaction and a few butterfly in the stomach. I work at Stop and Shop, we had a lady who would come in 30 minutes before closing (which is midnight) and would keep the cashier, bagger, and supervisor nearly till 12:30 to 1AM. I think one of our managers talked to her about it because now she comes in at noon and is gone by 2PM

I was at a KFC once and a guy came in and ordered 10, 8 piece meals. When he got his order he demanded his money back saying that it had taken way too long and that it was required by law that a fast food restaurant deliver anything you order in less than 2 minutes. He called the police when they wouldn't give him the money back, when the police wouldn't help he said he was going to call corporate and have the place shut down because they didn't get him 80 pieces of fried chicken in less than 2 minutes and then refused to give him his money back.
