  • In this build i Create an "On Air" sign for my office using Epoxy Resin instead of acrylic. I make the custom sized sheets from epoxy and then tint them to the color i want. Using my CNC I route out the grooves and then make a groove to pour the rest of the resin into it. I back light it with a battery powered LED light and use a torch to give the whole thing a Shoshugibon finish!

    I've been watching a lot of your old videos and the difference with this one is striking. Not just the cinematography and sound which is obviously much improved, but at first you were so formal and tentative and trying to be "professional" and by this time you were just letting your personality come out and these videos just overflow with energy and fun. It's been fun watching the evolution.

    If you still have the molds you used, I would suggest remaking the resin back plate and tinting it a MUCH more opaque white, milling out the ON AIR letters and filling them in with a transparent red so when the light is on, it only shows through the red letters rather than the white background...The translucent white makes the sign hard to read...

    Hey dude, if your resin is super cold it's good to give the bottles a warm bath for 5 minutes, it makes it much easier to measure and mix. Also using a drill to mix it is the reason your "clear" sheet was so frosty, there are loads of microbubbles in it. It's best to set a timer for 5 minutes and mix by hand. If you don't have a timer just mix it for as long as you think it could possibly take to mix the ingredients, scrape the sides, then mix until you want to gouge out your eyes with a grapefruit spoon. McDonald's drink stirrers are excellent for small batches.

    • @John_Malecki
      @John_Malecki  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Toby, the clear was actually tinted white, so thats why its cloudy, thats the look i wanted. but good tips!

      @@John_Malecki So you're saying I actually have to watch the video before telling you you're doing everything wrong? How professional, that's never going to work on TH-cam.

    • @John_Malecki
      @John_Malecki  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hahah sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesnt. But a lot of people suggested no drill. I think with the ultra slow setting stuff is the only time a drill is good, because it has so long to let air release

    A way to make this easier and cheaper is just red and white acrylic or PVC sheets and skip that step. Hobby shops usually have finished lettering too if you want to go real basic with it. Or you can buy vinyl sheets, cut it with a vinyl cutter and stick it to the back of a clear acrylic sheet.

    Movie is Almost Famous, but not gonna lie, never seen it (not sure how I remember where the music is from though). Great use of epoxy to make something that doesn't have a lake/stream/pond/brook/gulf in it. Love how the light comes through. For the shou sugi ban finish, does it matter if you're using map gas or propane (yellow vs blue fuel)? Never done it before, but would love to give it a try.

    Was really thinking that would have turned out better than it did. The light / led used is very underwhelming . The light shines through and drowns out the ‘On Air’ so meh

    Stuff you know: Easier ways to do this besides $25 worth of epoxy. And using that drill for mixing caused micro bubbles really bad ... Use a stick or something that moves slow enough to avoid introducing air. Thick epoxy takes more than 8 hours to cure hard especially in cold air. ... Checking voltage requirements before wiring is a good idea. Yeah ... but you got the light you wanted.🤣🤣

    How can you call this a diy?
    You have all this equipment.
    Its a diy provided you have a cnc table saw and more. Not a diy but more like a project.

      Because i Did It Myself.......I was not aware for a DIY video you have to use two rocks and a stick to build something.

      I been doing things like this for years. Projects require multiple tools yes and I have tools to do such a project. However DIY means simple things done by hand with everyday simple odjects that dont need lots of machinery. I mean great job on the project and this video is very well made. You did well. Just not a DIY more like a project people can do. Nothing bad just saying thats all. Some everyday people however dont have equipment like this. Hell I'd be afraid they would get hurt not knowing how to handle such tools. To you and I its simple put a router in ill hands bad things happen lol.

      First I have twice as many tools then your little shop there. Secound I have done carpentry work for over 18 years. So whats my knowledge? A do it your self project means anyone can do it with simple tools and hand tools and basic knowledge of how. Using machinery is more like a project you can do. However not a simple diy. Diy is simple things people can do with simple tools. Maybe not so much knowledge as you or I have but more like a teen learning. Or maybe a mom learning or something. When you start using machinery that one not every one has. Two know how to use without hurting yourself or someone else. Due to lack of knowledge of how to use the machinery. The only reason I bring it up because my son was looking for something simple he could do to make cash. However when he comes to me asking to use tools and machinery that he has no knowledge of could get hurt. However was encouraged by your video. I do teach my son however at his age and level of understanding could have gotten hurt. Thank the father that he comes to me before he touches. Now can you see where I am coming from. I mean your a great guy I'm sure and you did very well on the project. I am in no way attacking you here. It just worries me that some kid could get hurt being encouraged by the video.

      @@bryanroye1112 First, if people don't know how to handle their tools, they shouldn't handle them at all. Second, you don't need a router to get yourself hurt - a simple box cutter does that just fine and pretty much everyone has one at home. Third, while the router itself is definitely a more specialized machine most people don't own, it isn't essential for a project like this and neither is an electric sander.
      I'm with "D" on this. Your definition of DIY is way off and saying this isn't a DIY project is just a lame excuse for not trying to be creative and working around your limitations. Don't have an expensive CNC router? Buy a cheap Dremel knockoff and use that - or, if you've got shaky hands, buy vinyl cutout letters instead. Don't have all the necessary equipment and skills for the resin? Buy a sheet of acrylic. Don't have an electric sander? Use regular sandpaper. A project like this could be done in X different ways, depending on your skill, your budget and your equipment.
      After all, the lack of a CNC router or a pneumatic nail gun didn't keep people off from building houses or other stuff 200 years ago, why should it now?

      Ok that can be your next video. You should build a house with no tools at all. That I would like to see. Geee I hope it wont take to long.
