I've had my 2012 5.0 nearly 4 years now, and absolutely love it - one just "wafts around" in it like royalty, rarely feeling the need to dump 500bhp through the drivetrain. You definitely need the right mindset to running one, it was an £85k car new and the bills don't get cheaper just because the car does. I put money aside each month for maintenance and to build up funds for the chain job when it needs doing. Aside from servicing it religiously the big ticket items were a supercharger rebuild (the coupling wears and rattles), underside rust protection (it's nuts these things aren't protected better) ... and the interior heater blower, £85 part but 15 hour interior strip down to get to it (the wiring loom for the digital dash runs over the top of it). Oh, these things lunch on front arms too, thanks to our roads. Tax is £700+pa and insurance has risen too, but it is what it is. This thing is so next level that anything else would feel like a step down (or be even more financially crippling, haha)
Thank you for such a great an honest guide. Considereing buy ine of them later this year, and have been a passenger in a TDV8, and that was lovely. I like the description of the 5ltr as a day to day Bentley :)
People ask me all the time when I tell them my Westie is a 4.4, “jasus, she must be a sow on juice”. My response is if you have to worry about fuel consumption it’s not the car for you. That said my 4.4 averages 11L per 100km so that’s not too bad The one thing you may not get in the UK but you do get in a small rural town in Ireland is people staring. Some of it positive, some of it definitely dirty envious looks. Yesterday I had a man in a Touareg literally look at me up and down for two minutes. Anyways every time I watch this channel it makes me glad I purchased a Range Rover, it reaffirms any doubts I might have. So today I’m going to change the diff oil and give her a bath 😀
Brilliant video, I was hoping you would do a video on the 5.0 sc, I have one and i absolutely love it, and that’s coming from a 3.6 tdv8 which was an amazing vehicle
Very interesting video - thank you. I live within the ULEZ area and spent over 6 months looking for a 5.0s/c. The premium attached to them, lack of availability and advice from specialists about ongoing maintenance, particularly large jobs such as the timing chain replacement pushed me towards the 4.4 TDV8. This isn’t a daily so ULEZ costs aren’t a barrier and I’m not regretting it.
I’ve just bought a 2011 4.4 tdv8 85000 miles full service had everything done and changed absolutely immaculate no one has sat in the back 2 owners from new amazing
What a great review of the 5ltr. Like all RR some are nails and some are well cared for motors. But not all m62 RR have a bad reputation, yes, I've had issues, who hasn't with all range rovers, but I've kept mine in top condition and always serviced every year. Tows well too....as for mpg....who cares, if you worry about fuel this kind of motor isn't for you....and I've had v8 petrols for the last 20 plus years. Keep the videos coming 👍👍
Great video as always, have you done one on the 4.2 SC? As the 5.0lt came with the full spec did the 4.2 come with the same or was their a choice of spec? Cheers.
Cheers Darren - I’ve been looking forward to making it since you suggested it on one of the previous videos. Hell of a car - a friend has floated the idea of lending me his 5.0 L405… hopefully that will happen soon!
Hi James I think you may have missed a trick there with the glasses. Other TH-camrs with channels have started selling their own merchandise. You could dip your toe in the water by selling the glasses. Especially since we are all interested in the L322. £££
This issue that I am hearing about the 5.0L repair work is that there is almost 15 years of Range Rovers with this engine... If no one wants to work on them, then this is a major problem for almost everyone that owns a Range Rover.
Zach - it isn’t that “no one wants to work on them” there are companies and individuals who are specialising in dealing with the 5.0 specific issues and there are quite a few engine builders who will happily work on them. The issue is that your local “LR Specialist” may not want to take on the tougher jobs.
Literally viewing the 5.0L supercharged RRs right now, so this video really helped. 4.2L supercharged a bit too slow! whats the cost for replacing the timing chains on a 5.0? might use this as leverage at the dealers!
Hi Dave - you are probably looking at between £3.5-£5k for the chains. I wouldn’t get your hopes up on a discount though - most dealers won’t entertain discounting a perfectly working car based on a problem that may or may not happen. From what I can see in the market place most cars that have had chains replaced are trading at a 3-5k premium over those that haven’t. So unless you are looking at a particularly expensive example without chains done it’s unlikely to be a line of negotiation they will entertain. Good luck with your purchase - if it doesn’t work out and you fancy a diesel - do get in touch I’ve got a couple of nice ones awaiting prep.
Fortunately the independents that I use to tackle the bigger jobs are good as gold - but I did ring round a few in effort to broaden my network and there were a couple who wouldn’t take a 5.0 in for anything other than routine work. The point is - if you are thinking of buying one get a plan in place as to where you are going to take it should you need more complex work done.

An excellent review and comparison. Highly informative and interesting! Kindest regards.

Very good point - funnily enough - “Does ULEZ matter?” Is going to be one of questions I’ll address in part 2.

Good info to take on board like the channel
Been waiting for that. Excellent video . Pleased that you didn't just focus on on the elephant in the room (fuel) . That did sound awesome 😀

Stealth wealth like the Rolex white gold day date ! Get one bought !

Always making me put in the lotto with your fantastic reviews. One day my ship will come in. Lovely view at 14:53.

Would be interested to know your opinion of the 8 speed gearbox .
I would have the 4.4 tdi 8 speed box much better on fuel and does no revs . No brainer for me which is why I bought one.
Tell me please. What would you get average fuel consumption on the 5 litre supercharged. Ahhh. That’s why the 4.4 tdi makes more sense!
Between 10-18mpg… 🫠
@@fullfat4x4 18mpg 😀. Most I have seen is 16.1 I do a lot of short journeys though.
@@jonathanbaker4238how has your maintenance & reliability been?
If the LR independent isnt capable of working on the 5.0 then how useless is that independent.
