Brother Kenny.. I concur with your assessment of the UHQR. Elvin almost steals the show. For me he has a more forward presence and immaculate detail that the 33rpm doesn’t quite rival. The UHQR’s clarity and crispness is weighted with the spiritual depth and emotional intensity that was Trane’s original intent. If we open our ears and hearts we are rewarded with yet another sonic treasure compliments of the quartet and Acoustic Sounds. Again, thanks for your ongoing contribution to the discourse surrounding the music that we love so much.
It’s always a pleasure to hear you compare various versions of classic jazz albums. I’ve got the 2002 CD and an Impulse vinyl reissue, and they both sound okay to me, but I’ve been curious about the UHQR. Thank you, sir.
Could not agree more about Elvin Jones ride cymbal on the UHQR - I have been listening over and over and its sounds so good. I agree with all your assessments about this UHQR.
I don’t have a high end system but a well balanced one with a great cartridge and quiet turntable. I will tell you the 45 RPM always sound better with more detail and clarity of sound. Regardless of what the supposed experts say; my Music Matters and Analogue Productions 45’s are on the top of the scale. Combine all this with the top of the line vinyl being used what else can be said. Most of the complaints you hear about the 45 is having to get up and flip but I’ll take the sound and the exercise😊As always, a great video!
My friend brought the 45 to our listenibg session last night and it blew everyone's minds. I think the speed of the record is a bigger factor than the clarity vinyl and indeed it's frustrating to have that $150 price tag. Ive got the 33 and that's enough for me. My best UHQR is the new Aja. Wow! But I think I am done with $150 records for awhile as I'm going to be buying more of the Atlantic 75th anniversary records coming up. Thank you for your videos!
I was going to hold off on the UHQR since I also have the SACD single layer and two 33.3. Versions of Love Supreme. You convinced me to buy the UHQR! Chad at Acoustic Sounds should send you a thanks. Great review as always! I wish they would do more 33. 3 in UHQR.
absolutely! yes, i love the thought experiment about how the UHQR might sound at 45 rpm on regular black vinyl (no fancy box) for $60. i suspect the highest margin profit comes with the extra frills. I can understand the company wants to do that, and at the same time, you say, it makes this great pressing less accessible. i'd love to see these records as beautiful as they can sound without the frills and mark up.
This is my favorite album, I got the UHQR, too. Haven't had a chance to listen; waiting for a new phono preamp. one the walkthrough you took us through on all versions. I agree, the regular 33rpm AP vinyl is great! Can't wait to hear the UHQR. Thanks, Kenny!
As much as I love this album I cannot justify spending on a UHQR when I am content with the Acoustic Sounds version. I also have this on regular CD. I am from Canada so by the time an UHQR arrives at my house the price is just a little too high for me to pull the trigger on this particular release. I am glad you are enjoying your copy of John Coltrane's Love Supreme UHQR double 45 RPM. Love your review Kenny. Cheers!
Keep in mind, Analogue Productions already did Kind Of Blue on UHQR releases at both 33 and 45, and while the 33 is very good, the 45 takes it to a significantly higher level. Most of the improvements that you're hearing is due to what can be done be cutting at 45rpm.
Kenny, An excellent and thorough review. Nicely done!!! At one point I had my credit card out to buy the UHQR when you first started talking about the sound. However after watching the entire video and listening to all of your analysis I put my credit card away. What made me change my mind? Three things. First I have the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series 33rpm pressing and as you said it was a truly amazing sounding LP. Frankly I was wondering how much better the UHQR could possibly sound? After the Steely Dan Pretzel Logic UHQR which underwhelmed me, I was very skeptical. Your review explained in great detail just how much better the UHQR sounded and in what ways. This was when my credit card came out of my wallet. But I decided to watch the remainder of the video first. My second reason for passing is the very fact I do have the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series LP. As you stated it is an excellent sounding pressing and is at 33rpm. Records that aren't my favorite, I would rather much rather listen to at 33rpm with only one side change. Third and last: You mentioned if you do really love this LP, you will want the UHQR. While I really like this album, it is not a desert island disc and probably wouldn't make my Top 20 jazz LPS. With that in mind I save $150 plus shipping. Thanks for the comprehensive review. I owe you one! Jim
Brother Jim, thanks always for your great comments. I think that you are correct, If this album is not in your top 20 jazz albums, then the 33.3 version is excellent.
I like the way you worded the point what about AP releasing the same premium UHQR 45 but on black vinyl and just offered in the album jacket as usual, no box. If they considered going for lower margins where they can get licensing for more volume that should work. More people will get to listen to this reference version of A Love Supreme if AP goes that route. I can confirm there is sonic benefits to 45 RPM the way the lacquer is cut etc.. You can hear the diff between 33 and 45 like most Miles Davis KOB UHQR customers noticed. Somehow, it has to be about volume to meet demand for the ultimate quality AP offers, at an affordable price.
Nice review Kenny. I have the Impulse 33 1/3 RPM and I'm quite pleased with that one. I was disappointed in the 33.3 RPM UHQR of Kind of Blue because the vinyl was very noisy, and being in Canada it was a costly venture to get it and then to return it would be even worse! So I am holding off on UHQR and may dip my toe back in for Aja in October. Cheers
Great question about lowering the price of the record by using black vinyl. I’m sure you and everyone reading this already now the clear virgin vinyl used for the UHQR is the purest form of vinyl there is. I’m a believer that the black pigment additive may actually reduce sound quantity, for a number of reasons, maybe enough, for the most discerning audiophile ear to notice. I don’t see how skipping the process of adding an ingredient (in this case the black pigment) make the record MORE expensive. Adding the pigment involves, first and foremost, the bulk cost of the pigment itself. And then there’s the additional step and labor costs of mixing the pigment into the clear vinyl beads. That all amounts to more production costs. Theoretically the clear UHQR vinyl should cost less. Maybe the company that makes and sells bulk vinyl beads to Chad charges him more for the clear beads than the black ones. I’m no expert here. I’m just a hypothesis away from guessing lol. I think I’ll stick to my first pressing stereo OG. After tax and shipping I can think of better records on which to spend $180.00 to $200.00. Thank you for sharing your experience. Steve
Hey Steve, thank you very much for your comments. Your comment about black vinyl vs clarity UHQR vinyl and cost makes tremendous sense to me. I've often wondered about the actual cost of the premium vinyl vs the normal standard black vinyl. Thank you very much for viewing my video and your comments 😊
My copy is at low 300 and it sounds great. Better than 33/3 AP reissue but, that 33/3 is an awesome value and it should satisfy just about everyone. With that being said, UHQR with its black background, low noise floor, 45rpm advantage and overall more in the room presentation is in fact sonically superior. As to your questions? Well retouch in mastering, better mastering equipment, 45rpm are probably the culprit of its superiority over AP 33/3. But I’m sure if it was pressed on quiet black vinyl at 45rpm for $60, it would sound almost identical if not indistinguishable from UHQR. And more people would have a privilege to hear it at its best. As to top UHQRs. Rastaman Vibration, Miles and Coltrane 2nd and Cheap Trills third.
Thanks Kenny for this very well done video, I always enjoy your postings. I bought the 33.3 Impulse version on blue vinyl in March, but didn't give it a serious listen to until this evening after watching your video. Less than 1/4 way into side 1, patches of splatter, distortion, started appearing on the loud sax passages. I had not yet cleaned this record, so I immediately did so and the splatter problem went away. Starting a few weeks ago, it is now my standard practice to clean every new acquisition before first listening to it. I use a vacuum cleaning machine. Kenny, awhile ago you posted that you had just bought your first cleaning machine. How's that working for you?
Thank you very much for viewing my video and your comments. The cleaning machine works great for me especially on the used records that I purchase that really could use a good cleaning.
I have the AP 33, but am going to pass on the UHQR. I have found the clarity vinyl to be not as quiet as hyped. SRX and JVC is so much better. If I decide to better the AP 33, I’ll go straight to the AP Ultra Tape. AP’s Ultra Tapes are the real deal, BTW.
At $500 the Ultra Tape should be the real deal...one of these days I'm going to have to give one of those tape editions a try. Thank you very much for watching my video and your comments ✌️
I also would like to know if they could make a standard 45 for around $60. I really don't care to pay for those boxes, though i would love to have the deeper version. For me, their 33 is enough for now (and great).
Sorry to say but you are wrong, I have never served in any branch of the great armed forces of the United States in any capacity. Why do you say that ?
You’re just no-BS. You’re a straight talker, clear communicator, and seem disciplined, with a sense of humor. I appreciate your brand. Just subscribed.
I sincerely appreciate that, thank you very much ✌️...instead of being part of the military, I went to college straight out of high school and I have degrees in computer science and math, and both required discipline and structure...that being said, I have tremendous love and respect for the men and women who choose to serve in the military in the United States. Thank you very much for your comments ✌️
The Clarity vinyl does nothing and 45RPM just helps tracking in this case. The only things that matter in changing the sound is the source and mastering. The best UQHR is probably the Miles KoB. Its from the 3 track and a great recording. This ALS is from a copy of a 2 track tape.
Thank you very much for watching my video, I reallyappreciate it. I found my UHQR of A Love Supreme was just a bit more (not by much) deminsional and detailed than my UHQR of Kind of Blue despite A Love Supreme being sourced from a tape copy. What were your impressions when listening to both records on your system in your listening room ?
@@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews It sounds fine, most RVG recordings do. But I dont class RVG as highly in terms of recording as say Contemporary records or Columbia Studios from the late 50s. It doesnt create a soundscape as well as KoB. Also, while different preferences and systems may affect the sound differently, how they sound in relation to eachother in terms of quantity remains the same no matter what system one has. For example, if one pressing has more bass than another, then that is true for any system in the world, which one is preferred is subjective however. Thats why I appreciate such descriptions more as its easier to deduce which version is right for me.

Love Supreme is a spiritual album. Carlos Santana would listen to this album before his concerts for spiritual motivation . The UHQR, is amazing.
Thank you very much for your comments, I appreciated it 😊✌️
Never tire of hearing or hearing about A Love Supreme. Thanks, Kenny.
Thank you very much 😁
My exact ranking! I listened to every copy I owned before the UHQR and it truly blew me away beyond all expectations.

Kevin Gray 2LP 45 2010 is still the best version IMO
I do not have that version but I wish I did.
Is that from 🇺🇸 original analog masters?
@@UFO_computers yes
Why hasn't A Love Supreme been re-released in mono??
That's a fabulous question, one that I wish that I had the answer to. A mono version would be fabulous for the fans of this legendary album.
I think it was recorded in stereo only. If you have a mono button, just hit that!
