This was a super fun video. I am always struck by how few weeds you have in your garden. I would love to hear how you manage weeds in a future video. I think your Groundcover strategy is good, so maybe that is one of your secrets. Plus hard work, I suspect. Thanks for the instruction in this one - super helpful.
Glad to see you guys got the small chainsaw. Dewalt makes awesome tools. I just used mine on “pruning “ all the broken branches from our latest dumping of heavy snow (27”). Not what I planned on, but nature obviously had different intentions.
lol. such an excessive tool for the task, but I 100% agree with cutting those babies back! I sat through a whole summer, leaving mine large and spindley, cut it down to the ground the following spring and was SHOCKED at how quickly it recovered and the beautiful foliage it produced. Well done!
Also, just a video idea: take footage from this video and combine it with little snippets of how it’s growing all summer and people can see rejuvenation prunes aren’t as scary as they seem.
The thumbnail 😂. Also, I love the #FactsByChristopher about the forestry history. It reminded me of the Betty & Erastus Corning facts he shared on one of the tours.
“And we have a tiny chainsaw” 😂😂😂 So much pride in that! I just watched your video where you guys try cutting down the apple tree and so glad you invested in one.
Boy, I have to get on my smokes. Hubby got me a little saw like that, and I have not tried it yet. Thanks for the lesson. I never knew to cut it that short.
I love your smiles and upbeat attitudes. Wishing you great success in the garden and through life itself. I am in the same zone with 3 acres and use you (and others) to find beautiful tested plants. Thanks for doing the research and testing for me!
i just did this to my smoke bush and it is coming back beautiful, already leafing out in march zone 7b. i am not going with the new zone 8 because i saw 2 degrees this year.
Hey guys! I just love how you go out there & just tackle your garden. It’s invigorating. I have an overgrown abelia & azalea shrub I’ve been wanting to coppice for years but too afraid to do so. This video gave me the inspiration to fearlessly do the same. TY❤
Well, you’ve inspired me to go out and coppice my Winecraft Smokebush. It’s starting its second season and I don’t like its shape. I think I also put it in a spot that it will outgrow and encroach upon my Ginger wine Ninebark, which I love!
I used to live in CNY and had a larger smoke bush that I took down to about 2 feet. It had been sending up a lot of tall whip-like branches. Anyways, it never seemed to grow right afterwards and I was always pruning it. Alas, it died (I suspect I had something to do with that). : )
Good morning😃wonderful that you made this video on coppicing, a courageous approach one may need to do at times in the garden. Great for many deciduous shrubs, with evergreens it takes years, a definite no with coniferous specimens.
So many fun quotes from you guys today including: "We can coppice that right out of the ground!" LOL 😂 As I always say, I love how you guys work together!
Oh Lort, please take a Chainsaw Safety class. That poor Winecraft Gold had a chunk of bark come off from the chain skidding with that one-handed technique, which could have ended up as an emergency human situation, and not healthy for the shrub. Love you guys, be safe!!❤❤❤
I’ve been wanting to buy a smokebush but hesitated because I know they can get fairly large. Here is my answer! Can you coppice the same tree again in a few years if need be?
This reminds me of the George Anderson method of pruning, cut everything down to the nub! ( He's a gardener from the TV show Beechgrove . The Scottish version of Gardeners World)
Hello Eric and Chris. Love your videos. Very informant. I need your advise. I am in 6B. I want a sun loving hydrangea that would be good for my front landscape. I need it to be no higher than 4 feet and on my west side of house. Can you suggest something? Thanks.
Im 38 and my mom still doesnt want me near power tools period. I had to find ones with all the safety things and she still takes it away from me and does the cutting in the garden or she will pay for someone to do it. lol that looks satisfying.
This is the first time on these shrubs. I bet they are back to that size in two years. Keep in mind the root system is developed so there should be a lot of energy
If the deer hadn't 'coppiced' your Candy Corn Spirea would you have pruned them ? Just curious since mine got very leggy last year even with plenty of sun. I didn't trim them at all. '
Okay 👍. I'm about 20 mins. south of you! Mine are 3 years old good sized plants, got them from Troy Landscaping. So looking forward to getting back in the garden!
I am having another panic attack over your "coppicing". (I feel like I learn new words on your channel all the time and I have been gardening for years). I am not that brave. I will be sitting on the side of the chair this Spring and Summer waiting to see the progress on your shrubs. I would like you to do a month by month show of these shrubs for progress and for those of us who are more than a bit squeamish to prune so much. You gotta love that little chain saw 💪
Has your Kintzley's Ghost honeysuckle vine bloom for you? How old is it? I have one that grew a lot the first year but no blooms. Hoping for flowers this second year. Thanks for sharing!
I'm no tree cutting professional but wouldn't a lopper make a more precise cut on the smaller branches? I want to get a small chainsaw for the smaller shrub trees along my woodland garden. My husband uses his manly chainsaw to cut what is too big for a lopper. I'm too scared to touch the big boy chainsaw.
Is it possible to coppice a 15 year old mock orange. I love the plant and it smells amazing but it is looking tired and a bit scraggly. Would this technique help?
That’s a very good question. If I were you, I would do a quick Google search for the gardening, simplified podcast. Submit your question there. They are the experts that we would go to for that kind of question.
@@growformegardening l couldn't believe how far back you cut those bushes. If l did that with my luck they would die for sure. Can't wait to see how they bounce back. I have recently come across your videos and am really enjoying them.
Poor butterflies, I would be moving that butterfly bush because if a hummingbird gets on it, that praying mantis will capture them and suck their brains out. We need our butterflies..
I'm crossing my fingers that each smoke bush comes back bigger and better than before! You two are always great fun to watch.
Thanks 👍
They sure are! ❤
That intro was everything! “And we have a tiny chainsaw” You two are my absolute favorite!
The chainsaw is my favorite!
Can't to see them grow, loved watching you guys ty for sharing ❤❤
Me tooo!

The secret for us has been the Hula Hoe. I think it's also called a loop hoe. We just carry it around and take after a little bit here and there
Glad to see you guys got the small chainsaw. Dewalt makes awesome tools. I just used mine on “pruning “ all the broken branches from our latest dumping of heavy snow (27”). Not what I planned on, but nature obviously had different intentions.
Yeah I am sitting here watching crazy winds blow through. Much different than last week
Thanks! So enjoyable!
This was a fun one
Enjoyed watching your video as always.
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm staying toned to see if your bushes come back. 🥰
ooooh they better!
Same!
Love your video style. Not only educational, you also bring humor ❤
Gardening is hard work so we light to have fun with it!

They are doing amazing already.
Also, just a video idea: take footage from this video and combine it with little snippets of how it’s growing all summer and people can see rejuvenation prunes aren’t as scary as they seem.
Not a bad idea
The power of power tools! Educational and enjoyable to watch!❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Definitely faith in pruning!! Excited to see everything this spring/summer!! 🌺
Me too!!
The thumbnail 😂. Also, I love the #FactsByChristopher about the forestry history. It reminded me of the Betty & Erastus Corning facts he shared on one of the tours.
I do love a good fact
I have my fingers crossed for new growth to come this Spring 🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾
It'll be there!
“And we have a tiny chainsaw” 😂😂😂 So much pride in that! I just watched your video where you guys try cutting down the apple tree and so glad you invested in one.
It's so fun!
Excited to see how the smoke bushes grow back! Its so interesting that the leaves will be larger.
I know right? They could look like little saucers

You're welcome!
Thank you. I took mine down to about a foot but I’m going to prune some more!
Good luck!
Eeek! You guys are fearless gardeners! Go big or stay home, or should I say Go Tiny? Love the baby chainsaw.
Love it!
Holy smokes! Smoke bushes!
hahaha
Well this gives me the confidence to go after my shrubs! I’m always afraid to prune, worried the shrub will die.
They are hardier than you think
i just did this to my smoke bush and it is coming back beautiful, already leafing out in march zone 7b. i am not going with the new zone 8 because i saw 2 degrees this year.

Thanks for another wonderful video!
Thanks for watching!

That must be a beautiful combination....the tiny leaves and the round leaves
Oh how I love your videos!!
haha thanks

From what I've read, younger plants take more kindly to this treatment
I love power tools... especially tiny tools❤... if you have a chance, could you guys do a sharpening tool video, please... thank you!
Confession... we haven't sharpened anything because we tend to lose pruners! haha
Good morning😃wonderful that you made this video on coppicing, a courageous approach one may need to do at times in the garden. Great for many deciduous shrubs, with evergreens it takes years, a definite no with coniferous specimens.
I totally agree. These are fast growing plants.
@@growformegardening I did my smokebush and butterfly bushes on Sunday😉
Awesome!
So many fun quotes from you guys today including: "We can coppice that right out of the ground!" LOL 😂 As I always say, I love how you guys work together!
Thanks!
Thanks for another great video❤ what is the name of chainsaw? Did you buy online?❤
Thanks! We did... it's in the description. We already had a battery for our drill so I was able to buy the chainsaw on its own
You guys are Adorable ❤
aww thanks

No more one handed chainsawing!
Oooh foxy!
haha I LOVE my hat!
I’ve been wanting to buy a smokebush but hesitated because I know they can get fairly large. Here is my answer! Can you coppice the same tree again in a few years if need be?
Absolutely. If you fall down a rabbit hole googling like I did you will learn that it was a very common practice
Your thumbnail 😆🤣🤣
haha

Firelight Tidbit!!! They are so beautiful and the perfect size
I am excited to purchase one.@@growformegardening

This one is pretty safe...you have to hold in two buttons for it to work
Do you know how fast they can grow back to the previous size? Or is it the first time you are trying this?
This is the first time on these shrubs. I bet they are back to that size in two years. Keep in mind the root system is developed so there should be a lot of energy
So the rose of sharons don’t need to be pruned? I have 2 that I installed last year ❤
They really don't need it
If the deer hadn't 'coppiced' your Candy Corn Spirea would you have pruned them ? Just curious since mine got very leggy last year even with plenty of sun. I didn't trim them at all.
'
I wouldn't have. Ours are so tiny. If the shape is a little leggy just snip off the bits that you don't like
Okay 👍. I'm about 20 mins. south of you! Mine are 3 years old good sized plants, got them from Troy Landscaping. So looking forward to getting back in the garden!

Has your Kintzley's Ghost honeysuckle vine bloom for you? How old is it? I have one that grew a lot the first year but no blooms. Hoping for flowers this second year. Thanks for sharing!
I bloomed once in its second year. I think it may have been more user error because we didn't have drip to it.

So much satisfaction with the snip snip!! Can't wait to see everything come back 🌱🌱🌱
The snip snip is very calming
They will!!! Thank you for watching!!
💙👍🏻💙
:P
Held my breath with each cut with the chainsaw. There can’t be any uh-ohs or oops or a finger could be gone. Please be careful.
Absolutely. That saw has a safety tip and you have to squeeze two buttons to make it work
Poor butterflies, I would be moving that butterfly bush because if a hummingbird gets on it, that praying mantis will capture them and suck their brains out. We need our butterflies..
Thankfully it only happened once!
I’m sure you meant “ if a butterfly lands on it”. I’m thinking it would be pretty difficult for a mantis to suck the brains out of a hummingbird! 😱😁
@@peggy-ann1961 no google it. Happens.
