  • First broadcasted on July 21, 2012.
    The Russians want James Bond dead. Will his romance with a beautiful spy finally cloud Bond's judgement? Stars Toby Stephens and John Sessions.
    It's 1955 and the Russians plan an act of terrorism. Choice of target? James Bond. To be 'killed with ignominy:' a major sex scandal will leave his reputation, and that of MI6, in tatters.
    Colonel Rosa Klebb of the KGB devises a plan to lure Bond into their trap, using beautiful Corporal Tatiana Romanova as bait - plus a Spektor, the latest Russian decoding device. MI6 learns that Tatiana wants to defect and 'M' orders Bond to Istanbul. When Tatiana makes contact she seems to be in love with him - but is she? Either way, he soon falls for her and they leave Istanbul together, accompanied by larger-than-life Darko Kerim, Head of British Intelligence in Turkey. The climax of the drama includes a surprising confrontation between Bond and the murderous Rosa Klebb.
    Stars Toby Stephens as James Bond, John Standing as M, Janie Dee as Moneypenny, Julian Sands as Q, John Sessions as General, Mark Gatiss as Kronsteen, Eileen Atkins as Rosa Klebb, Tim Pigott-Smith as Kerim and Martin Jarvis as Ian Fleming.
    In writer Archie Scottney's brilliantly evocative 'radio screenplay,' we see another side to 007. Unsure of his judgement, can he bring the lovely Tatiana safely to England, along with the precious Spektor? Will the Russians succeed in having Bond killed? If so, who is the would-be murderer?
    This is Jarvis & Ayres' third James Bond dramatization.
    Specially composed music by Mark Holden and Michael Lopez
    Director: Martin Jarvis
    Producer: Rosalind Ayres
    A Jarvis & Ayres production for BBC Radio 4.

    These BBC plays are such great adaptations of the books. Just finished reading this one and the radio drama is spot on with the book. Kudos!

    I think these are really well made and so skilfully take a rich novel and compress it to just 1 and a half hours, keeping the sense and the style. Excellent cast too.

    What a brilliant cast of actors ....... I would listen to them reading a shopping list. How extraordinary.
    Thank you so much for sharing this and lightening the burden of these present times.
    From my isolation in Europe gratitude.

    To cast a Bond Villain as Bond, is genius. I've listened to all these new radio productions many times. They get better woth each listen. Let's hope for more!

      If they wanted to cast a Bond villain it should have been Sean Bean. Die Another Day was the worst of the series with the worst villain and Bond performance ever. I don’t know why everyone loves Pierce Brosnan so much. Sure, women and gay men love him for the same reason I love rewatching that scene from Basic Instinct, but for everyone else, he’s a cartoon character designed for 13 year old boys. I rooted for Zao in DAD.

      He's much better as Bond here than he ever was as a villain.

    If the 007 stories were remade, the way the fleming books are portrayed in this audio makes it good for a netflix-type series

    Toby Stephens much like his father has proven himself well worthy of great roles in BBC audio dramas
    his father Robert Stephens voiced Aragorn in the 1981 Lord of the Rings BBC Production written by Brian Sibley

      Some of them aren't that good but this one is outstanding- which is good because From Russia with Love is by far the best book in the series.

    Ian Fleming intended for this to be his final Bond novel as he was growing tired of the character, but much as with Conan Doyle's failed attempt to distance himself from Sherlock Holmes, Fleming's fans wouldn't allow Bond's death to be a final death. They inundated his publishers, agent, and Fleming himself with letters begging for Bond to be saved.

    • @jmann6130
      @jmann6130 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that unfortunately happens to a lot of writers who feel like they have been stuck to a book series that the fans now demand that you have to keep writing for witch is a shame because he really did put in a lot of work into 007 and caused a world wide of interest into espionage and supervillain’s

    • @naughtydog1617
      @naughtydog1617  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @JW G sorry for the late reply but that notion of yours is actually a common misconception. In fact, Fleming NEVER had any intention of "killing Bond off." He only went with this ambiguous ending because he was inspired by a book before his that did the same kind of thing. I forgot what book it was though. I learned all of this from listening to the commentary of the From Russia with Love film on Blu-ray.

    Such a shame he played a villain in a Bond film, otherwise he could have been a contender. He does a good job in these recordings, which I’ve been enjoying (thanks for uploading!), along with a star-studded cast

    Conspicuously absent were the gypsy camp and killing of Krilencu scenes. Not vital to the story and probably omitted to keep the run time manageable, but would have loved to have seen (heard) how it would have been presented for radio.

    So does Specter not exist in the books? I take it then Blofeld and connections to Dr. No don't exist except in the movies?

    • @naughtydog1617
      @naughtydog1617  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the books, SPECTRE doesn't get introduced until Thunderball. And no, there aren't any connections between Dr. No and Blofeld in the books.

    There's only one minor thing that bugs me during this.
    The part where Bond and M are reciting "That's what little boys are made of" is very out of character for both of them.
    Bond would never make a comment like that to to his superior during a briefing, and M certainly would not go along with it.
    Otherwise, this is an excellent audio drama version of the story.

    • @lynchaney6844

      Continuation or adaptions seem to struggle with the Bond M relationship. John Gardner had a weird take on it. Like M was permanently p1ssed off with him and held Bond in permanent contempt. That wasn't the dynamic created by Fleming. Artist licence I guess.
