While neat, this is 100% about the material hardness. Newer axes are not hardened as much to prevent edge chipping. Old axes they couldn't control hardening as well. If you wanted an axe with the same hardness as older ones with better modern materials, it's trivial to make. Customers don't want that, they want sharper edges with less chipping.
@lonelyplanet1080 notice how that light golden color flakes off when the axes are separated? That's not heat-treat tint. That's a layer of oxidized metal.

This is the entirely wrong test to determine axe quality. Modern axes are made to be less hard to prevent edge chipping, and easier sharpening. Just like a car in a crash, it breaks for a reason.
They probably made the axe softer because its cheaper, but since its now softer it shouldnt break for much longer because it can take a harder hit and absorb more kinetick energy

not really. the marginally harder steel was going to cut the marginally softer steel when enough pressure was applied... and it took many many tons of force. this basically tells you nothing about what would happen in human use conditions.

proper heat treatment to quality steel means alot
heat treatment means nothing if you don’t know what the chemistry of the metal is, also simply using an axe will not “work harden” anything

That's pretty damning for the new axe huh?
Not really, there are advantages to using softer steel for a tool that takes repeated impacts. The harder steel is more brittle.
The new axe will most likely last longer because it will deform over time and is easier to sharpen while the old axe is just going to shatter one day
not really. the marginally harder steel was going to cut the marginally softer steel when enough pressure was applied... and it took many many tons of force. this basically tells you nothing about what would happen in human use conditions.
