*The DisBeLieF Storyline* Today the first seeds of the reverse BeLieF storyline are being planted - we learn that Deacon has custody of Little Eric, and that he actually had it all along because in spite of Jonathan and his lawyers working around the clock for so long on the documents, the papers were never filed. Clearly, Jonathan doesn't hire the best people (and is himself not one of the best people). Or maybe Jonathan's IegaI team finally had it and decided to troII the Forresters. This could have been excellent continuity if we had actually had _any_ hint at all that there was something not quite right about the custody papers at the time. Now, it feels like a convenient retcon in order to move the storyline forward faster. However, Deacon being Eric's legaI guardian is an important plot point because it is what will eventually allow Stephanie to win controI of Forrester Creations back from Brooke. And it is a nice symmetry that the thing that allows her to do this is the same as what made them lose controI in the first place - someone who occupies a certain role without a "contract". Brooke worked at Forrester but was not an employee, and now Little Eric lives with Rick and Amber but is not legaIIy a Forrester.
Great post Annie! Love your point about the lack of a contract as the similarity between the two storylines (also love the "Disbelief" title you coined). And you're so right about it feeling like a retcon this time around. Compare that to the Belief storyline which really didn't feel retconned at all because Bill Bell was known to map out story arcs years in advance and so the clues were there even before the "uh oh" moment with the patent application arrived. We saw Brooke taking an interest in the Forrester lab while she was Eric's wife a whole TWO YEARS before. We saw the development of the formula over time which often put Ridge and Brooke in close proximity together. And we saw Eric using the Belief launch to give Brooke public credit for creating the formula when he was trying to win her back and dissuade her from divorce. All of this set the groundwork for Brooke to claim ownership and a credible twist where you could believe Brooke was never under contract because you saw with your own eyes that Eric was often conflating business and personal with her and that her foray into the lab was more as a wife's creative hobby than a paid employee's directive.
*Hope is lost* Disappointingly, the show avoids a possibly expIosive confIict between Macy and Brooke by simply having the lawyer discourage Deacon from pursuing custody or visitation of Hope, instead shifting the focus to Little Eric. This makes little sense because as Hope's father, Deacon _should_ be able to get visitation at the very least (and possibly shared custody later on). And this storyline would be far more structurally sat is fy ing because it would be Brooke's karma not only for having Deacon's child, but also for disrupting Macy's plans to have a family with Thorne. But the show chooses not to go there - possibly because the writers don't want Brooke to lose something so important - and instead, Amber (who already lost two children) is made to lose her child, which just feels unnecessarily crueI. The same thing happened a year earlier when Amber and Brooke were both pregnant, but Amber had a miscarriage while Brooke gave birth without problems. At the time it felt as if Amber was made to suffer _instead of Brooke._ And now Amber, who is the sensible and reasonable one, again loses her child while Brooke, who is the one creating the problems, gets to keep hers. It feels as if the writers, realizing that Deacon actually does deserve to "win" in this storyline, shift the storyline to make sure he doesn't win _against Brooke,_ instead making him win against Amber, who wasn't even the one flghting him in the first place.
@@mara4450 I don't expect or want her to lose custody of Hope entirely, but even visitation or shared custody would be seen as a "loss" by Brooke because she wants to be Hope's only parent (and leave the position as Hope's father open to any man she desires). So having to co-parent with Deacon would be exactly what she deserves for choosing to have a child with Deacon (and, incidentally, it would be best for Hope too).
Watching this season, I am starting to identify with those whales Nicky talked about who "finally got it" and decided to change their habitat... I wish we could change our habitat to S9 right about now.
Rick and Amber's idea of quality time with Little Eric is playing "Go Fish" with _each other,_ while Eric is just standing there holding a bunch of cards and not participating, and then when Amber wins she goes to hug and kiss Little Eric, who again is not participating but just holding on to the cards uncomfortably. Then Little Eric tells them he'd rather do what he did with Cuckoo. 😂 This kid is doing it again with the subtle troIIing of Rick and Amber, just like when he asked Rick where his daddy went. And it just becomes funnier because Rick and Amber aren't actually connecting with him at all in this scene in spite of them supposedly playing with him. Even the Old MacDonald Iacked the enthusiasm of Sally and Macy's version, with Amber saying "no encores" and leaving Eric with his dinosaur. And Amber gave the impression of singing _at_ the child, rather than _with_ him.
I love this comment because I had the same reaction to the “Old Macdonald” scene. Macy’s was so warm and interactive, focusing on Little Eric. Bobbie Eakes’ warmth in that scene was reflected in the engagement and enthusiasm of the actor playing Little Eric. In contrast, Adrienne seemed like she was putting on a concert. And Little Eric was much more passive.
@@FayeIL exactly this - and you can see it in the scenes with Macy and Little Eric because a lot of the time you can barely see Macy's face in the scenes (or in the photos) because she is turning away from the camera to look at the kid (I noticed it because I have seen so many photos like that of me and my daughter, where only my hair is visible). Amber did the opposite, turning away from the kid and "performing" for Rick and the camera.
It would have been more dramatic if Brooke lost custody of Hope to Deacon. Why would Brooke get compliments from Stephanie, as Brooke had an affair with Eric, Ridge, and Thorne. Too bad they didn't bring in a romantic interest for Ridge during this time. Almost like Ridge doesn't want to be alone, and Ridge is right, Brooke likes the attention from Nick, just like Hope did with Wyatt.

"I feel very inspired," says Nicky, and just like that, he is now not only a romantic lead, heir to the Marone empire, and master of marine metaphors - he can sing too! 🙄 I have said before that there is singing on the show that works, and singing that doesn't work (and this is not only related to actual vocal skills - case in point, Sally and Clarke singing karaoke worked fine). It has to do with whether it feels like the _character_ singing, or the _actor_ -showing off their- singing. This is clearly an example of the latter. There is no need for Nick the character to sing, other than as a way for JW to get even more attention on the show. It adds nothing in terms of characterization.
@@tiroyaonejustinphologolo9763 yes! Even Amber singing Old MacDonald felt unconvincing, like she was doing it only because Eric wanted her to but really she didn't want to sing it (while Sally and Macy really had fun with it and soId it). And Nicky singing and playing the guitar has the same feel as when Ridge is doing it - it feels like it's not the character doing it but the actor.
I might feel the same way if like with Amber Nick would suddenly chase a music career, but I have enough male cousins who just love to jam or to play the guitar and to sing when we go camping or have a barbecue (and who make me feel like the odd one because I had guitar lessons for a year but I can't play like the ones who are just self-taught) - and playing guitar and singing might be a nice hobby if you work on a tanker.
