  • Yesterday, the company handled a 2 alarm house fire in our first due, which started in a detached garage. Engine 502 and 54-2 arrived simultaneously and stretched multiple lines to knock down the fire in the garage and the house. The fire in the house was contained mostly to the siding outside, the attic, and the 2 rooms directly against the garage. Crews worked for about 3 hours before clearing. We were assisted by members from Lampeter, West Willow, New Danville, Quarryville, Lancaster Township, Blue Rock Fire Rescue, Strasburg, Conestoga, Manheim Township Fire Rescue, Ronks, Gordonville, and Reamstown fire companies. Thank you to Rescue 80 (Columbia) for standing by in our station. Willow Street Fire Company. Taken 12/17/22
    Engine 502 is a 2010 Pierce Arrow XT

    FAQs-
    Q: "Where is this?"
    A: Our fire house is located in the town of Willow Street, just south of Lancaster City, Lancaster County Pennsylvania.
    Q: "What is the spinning thing?"
    A: That is called the "Roto-Ray," it is a spinning light designed to catch drivers attention.
    Q: "Why is the call so far away?" or "Why does it take so long to get there?"
    A: Many of our responses, or at least many of the ones that are uploaded are responding to assist other departments. Usually another firehouse can be seen or is passed by who is already on the call. We can reach the far end of our first due in West Lampeter Twp within 5 minutes, and in Providence Twp about 7.
    Q: "What camera are you using?"
    A: For dash cams I use a GoPro Hero 7, helmet cam videos I use a FireCam 1080

    Thank you, all of you, for what you do. March 5 1980 my house blew up and burned down killing my roommate. I was asleep on the couch and it saved my life as the blast went right over me. To this day I have not lived in or even slept in a house with gas. It is a bad thing to wake up to. That said, I am impressed by what you do and grateful. Thank you again and be safe.

    This was an exceptional response and knock down. I have seen video before of professional fire department that let a garage fire take down a dwelling, multiple vehicles and damaged a neighboring structure... because they all just took their sweet time gearing up and laying out their lines and couldn't be bothered to really go. You guys were right off that truck and getting those lines out immediately to save as much as possible of the house.

      As a career FF and former volunteer I completely agree with you not only did they get the line into play extremely fast they ignored he raging garage fire to protect the exposure. If they would have gone to the garage first they could have a well involved attic fire on the delta/side 4 exposure. This is how our crew operates, that’s why it always blows my mind when rigs are on scene of a simple residential occupancy for 4-5-6 minutes with no water application. Shows a well trained crew career or volunteer can operate seamlessly.

    Very impressive work! Great salvage op (almost non-existent these days).
    My only suggestion is that you all learn and practice “Transitional Attacks”. Big fire require big water, big time and fast, since fire doubles every 30 seconds. I saw that you have a TFT Blitz nozzle, but didn’t use it first (suggest preconnecting it).
    Good stop on the extension to the house.

    • @Fire-Rescue50
      @Fire-Rescue50  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not a huge issue, but with several lines flowing at the same time we had to try and prioritize different ones

    • @tom0photographi
      @tom0photographi ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lines now operate at considerably lower pressures than before, those lines all look to have adequate pressure. This is due to nozzle design and larger attack lines. 1 3/4” vs 1 1/2” means less friction loss. The nozzles combo nozzles we run need 52 psi at the nozzle and flow 150 gpm. Water supply shouldn’t cause these issues unless you are over pumping a hydrant which is very difficult to do based on the lines they have off in this video. Had they been operating multiple 2 1/2” or master streams or a combination or are pumping multiple hydrants off the same water main (typically would get city water works to boost pressure to that area) that could cause issues. Or you are doing a water shuttle, which isn’t applicable in this case.

    I am not used to seeing melted houses, vinyl siding has not ever been an option anywhere I have lived either due to wildfire hazard, or simply due to ambient heat plus the sun making it run. That house looked like it was built very recently, such a shame to lose it.

      After the soaking you gave that firewood, it will be a year before it is useful ;p
