The 1963 GANEFO Games or Games of the Emerging Forces apparently was championed by Indonesia's Sukarno as an alternative to the Olympics dominated by the then domineering West during the Cold War.Many Third World countries especially China and Indonesia participated. To many it may seem deplorable that Indonesia should request that China throw the badminton team event to allow Indonesia to look good but in the circumstances it was necessary as Sukarno sponsored the Games and China at that time was too ready to comply as the spirit of that time was "friendship first and competition second".Nowadays of course China has adopted the American kick-butt model of winning at all costs. Few years later Sukarno was deposed, apparently sponsored by some Western powers, and millions of people linked with Communism were slaughtered and many Chinese residents repatriated. More can learned by searching Ganefo and Sukarno.
yes, it says that he received a directive from above to lose the match on purpose, in order to "save face" for the indonesian sports authorities who were present and hosting the event, as well as for indonesian pride.
@iamreallytall101 Thanks for trying but some points were misinterpreted.Tang confirmed he was quite ordinary in Indo ,it was the Chinese sports system that made him great. It was the Ganefo Games,a sort of Asian Olympics, Indo didn't want to lose face and demanded that China throw the group match and Tang was asked by his Minister to lose deliberately to Indos.During the Cold War China used sports as a public relations exercise to win allies, friendship first, competition second.
Being born in Indonesian doesn’t mean they are Indonesians. Just remember how you slaughtered all Chinese ethnic people in your country. How dare you say that they are Indonesians
@@dodo-eu6ox Not all of the Chinese people in our country were slaughtered during the events of both 1966 and 1998. I'm proof of that, ethnically I'm half Chinese, half Batak. The discrimination is still very real, though.
Amazing... this is why I don't like Chinese national sport teams even though I'm Chinese. It's always been in the service of politics instead of for the sake of sports itself, and some players are shameless about it. That's understandable in Tang's era of course, but sometimes I feel that it's still true now.
Obviously you dont understand what Tang was saying at 30 seconds. He is stating very clearly that he was quite ordinary whilst in Ina, it was only when he was absorbed into the Chinese system that he started to excel. If you watch Chinese Badminton history you will know that China Badminton was already established by other Ina Chinese long before Tang. All the players you mentioned except LD and Xia were trained by Hou Jia Chang.
They are not Indonesians, they are just Chinese who happened to be born there. Indonesia never gave them citizen rights and they no longer what anything to do with Indonesia later
Well Tang admitted to be a bad actor as bad as Yu Yang and Wang Xiao Li in the 2012 Olympics.I believe China has agreed to take a few steps backwards and concentrate on promotion rather than winning. there is nothing more to achieve after the success of the 2012 Olympics.

What is Tang saying at 1:40? Something about losing his match on purpose?
Tang Xianhu, Hou Jiachang, Fu Haifeng...we lost so many potential Indonesian greats because of our own stupidity. I wish we hadn't done what we did
