    Tech tip: run the new keys in an out on the outside lock cylinder to smooth out the rough cuts on the blade. It prevents keys getting stuck on the ignition. Love your videos.

    Well, that was easy. All it took was the right equipment combined with a whole lot of learning and experience. When I was in school one of the jobs at the lumber yard was making keys, I got pretty good at it and I think they cost a quarter.

    Been a fan of the channel for a while, but came across this video...Glad to see you crossing over into my area. Autel is one of the popular programmers in the locksmith world. My main programmer is Xtool Pro Pad 3, but does include a lot of the mechanic side also...but I stick to my lane (unless it's friends or family needing mechanical diagnosis).

    Those handheld computers are amazing tools, a whole bunch of testgear in one place.
    Even a basic obd2 scanner is handy for the diy'er to get a rough engine fault :-)

    It truly sucks that you have to spend several thousand dollars on a tool just to program a key, or do basic diagnostics on the vehicle. Just goes along with my opinion at all the electronics at new cars are unnecessary and just plain suck.

    I programmed two new keys for my 2004 Sienna without having to buy a scanner. Just follow the procedure of opening and closing the door along with inserting the removing the keys from the ignition to get into program mode.
    I am playing around with Toyota Techstream software which I was able to install on a $70 Windows 10 tablet that I bought last week. I am not a mechanic but my dad was an ASE certified mechanic, but he didn't want any of his children following in his footsteps.

    • @38911bytefree
      @38911bytefree 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are some alternative procedures, I know for VW for example that is all made using the door, hood and trunk switches, then it forces you to put one physical key on the ignition while the "new" one need to hold the door switch in "open" position That is, you will never be able to program a key if you cant show at least one original key on the ignition. This keys doesn't use transponder, is just for the alarm and central lock system. A scanner could do it faster but still this backdoor there. In this very particular case only 4 key were allowed, a 5fth key will delete the first key learned. And there was another whole combination for complete key deletion. At this point the only thing that is protecting the car is a proper physical key on the ignition. Which is a bit weak for today standards, but it was enough 15 years ago. Also, this combinations of switch action and times (very weird) were unknown to the user ... OF COURSE ... (I believe ...)

    hi Eric, I have an Australian 1998 Prelude that is my weekend car, I believe it has the T5 key (probably the same as your civic) and the factory immobilizer/alarm. You can buy T5 keys with chips on eBay but I believe that requires you to "clone" an existing key rather than adding a new key to the system, is that correct? Honda Australia wants nearly $100 for a key and the dealers near me can't even tell me if they can program keys for "such an old car". I have one original black key and the Red key, what's the best/cheapest way to get another key?

  • @lucifur999
    @lucifur999 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Alot of times with a after market remote starter the second key fob goes in a little box underneath dash so it will register the immobilizer to allow vehicle to start... Just incase anyone cares lol...

      Autel would be an amazing scanner if the graphs werent so useless. You pull up O2 pids and instead of the graph being set at 0-1 volt it defaults to some useless arbitrary number like 0-18.24 volts and it doesnt matter what you do in the graph settings you cant just put it to 0-1. You can usually get close enough but sometimes not. Same thing on 5 volt circuits except worse. It really makes the graph useless and I have to grab the (stupidly overpriced) Snap On.

    Very helpful video. I was trying to program keys to an 09 Civic the other day and found out the ECU is bad, so I have one on order. This video will help for the Civic I'm doing even though the process may be slightly different. I'll be using my Snap On Solus, but I also have an Autel scanner and a Silca key programmer, so one of them should do it.

    Thanks for at least partly taking a stand on scan tools. As you said, the higher end ones are a big investment and it would be good to know more about your opinions of how the big 4 compare as there not that many experienced guys who have real time with all 4 brands like you do? It's complicated with Autel suffering from legal action, the Verus being super expensive, while Launch and OTC are relative unknowns.

    I don't usual comment but I have to say this to all mechanics. Why the hell do you still have the Scrap-on scanner when the Autel and even the Launch can do all the Snap-on can and A LOT MORE!. The Autel can program keys. The Snap-on can't. Great whey you are repairing/replacing switches. The Autel can program PCM's, the Snap-on can't. Now what mechanic has to taken the car to the dealer just because he can't program a burned out PCM? The Autel can program BCMs, Battery management Systems, Immobilizers, etc. The Snap-on..forget about that. Take it to the dealer. Finally the Autel is an Android based tablet, with camera, speaker, etc. You can put in TH-cam app, Skype (use it as a telephone or texting tablet), whatever android app you want, etc. You want to see videos of funny cats whilst you work?The Snap-on is windows based. Slow with time clunky and crashy. Finally the Autel is much much cheaper, The updates are much cheaper. The Snap-on.... get ready to bend over. A mechanic is limiting his work abilities by using the Snap-on instead of the Autel. BTW, I go to several mechanic's shops to program cars their Snap-on machines can't. And I earn good money that way.

    Am a snap on user been paying thousands of dollars on updates and buying new scanners just bought an autel for less than 350$ and does lot more than my expensive snap on modis with all updates what a waste of money ...how snap on want us to ve paying more updates and buying new equipment..when with less than what you give a down payment for new machine can buy an autel and get free updates for a year and plus no subscription need to be pay for other programs ..by the way am over 19 years experience technician....just take the chance and go take a shot worn this new cheaper machines that work really good ..KUST DONT EXPECT WILL BE AS FAST RESPONSE LIKE SNAP ON ..but will work just need tome to get used to and nees to put some tome to discover more abilities on the software..good luck guys

    Hey Eric, very informative as usual. Are you aware of any DIY J2534 programmers for Honda that will do the same as your Autel but at a fraction of the cost since I only need it for Hondas? You mentioned DrewTech, are you referring to the MongoosePro for Honda? I know those work with Honda's HDS but would it (MongoosePro) allow you to make make more keys w/o having the LSID from NASTF? Thanks for your info.

    Just bought a Honda that came with one key and one remote, key and remote are seperate. I do NOT like the idea of having to go thru the aggravation of this key crap thing nor the idea of not knowing why the original owner didn't have a freakin spare key, or how many keys were programmed. I'll get charged a rediculas price now just to reprogram new keys... this sucks!!

    • @upallnight888
      @upallnight888 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The theft light is what a car owner see, the money light is what Eric O sees. Why didn't the Honda dealer also program the keys when he cut the keys? Keys don't usually come precut and on a BMW, the dealer can't cut or program the key. You will need to provide proof of ownership and they will order you a new key. New key comes programed to start the engine, but the dealer will still need to program the FOB.

  • @SmittySmithsonite
    @SmittySmithsonite 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I THINK my Autel 906TS can do this too ... but don't quote me on that. Going off memory. I recall seeing the option to program keys on other vehicles I've had here. A great feature, for sure!
    This thing has already surprised me with it's capability. So far, it's all I've got, besides a 10 year old AutoXray AX7000 - no bi-directional control with that one, aside from an EVAP test. Doesn't tell you what it's testing, but from learning from all you guys on TH-cam, it's probably the purge solenoid - can hear it click on/off.

    There is an illegal update to that tool which Chinese are selling to auto theft gangs. And the code allows you to code new keys on vehicles without the original key being inserted! I hope it's not autel itself who is providing the code! Actually I wish someone had tried to copy keys without inserting the original key, wonder if it would work?
