    Thanks for the review! I really appreciate the little details like all the small consumables that are required. Not a lot of equipment reviews go through that sort of stuff. Affordable resin printing might get me into 3d printing. I've never liked the rough resolution on filament printers. The output from this looks incredible.

      That's exactly why I went with the Elegoo Mars. I too wanted to get into 3d printing, and FDM is just so low quality I just had no interest.
      The Mars is pretty great, but the Elegoo Saturn is nicely above that. ( Saturn is Elegoos equal to the Photon Mono X. They use the same screen. ) The Saturn far outsold Elegoos expectations, so they won't have it in stock on Amazon until sometime next month, and will probably sell out pretty fast.
      Here's a bad image of an example of what the Saturn can do out of the box:
      pbs.twimg.com/media/Ek_ZcvfWkAACS3d?format=jpg&name=4096x4096
      That's another thing that doesn't get mentioned much: SLA basically just works out of the box, while FDM requires a lot of tweaking.
      Now, that isn't to say there isn't plenty of tweaking that can be involved in SLA. There are a lot of settings that need to be tweaked for different things. However, if you stick with a simple grey resin ( always start there ), it's amazing how well it can go.

    • @3DJapan
      @3DJapan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it will cost a little more, especially since IPA and gloves are harder to find right now. But the quality really makes it worth it.

      @shadow7037932 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you've printing mins and such, resin is definitely the way to go. But for functional prototypes and such, you'll still want a FDM printer.

    • @ivangutowski
      @ivangutowski 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zemerick Awesome info cheers, what about cost of the final product. To make the same product does it cost a lot more in consumables with a sla vs fdm printer ?
      I thing for now - protorptyping I'll get an ender 3 pro for ~£150 and then later look at these products..
      Money is not an issue, it's just that I prefer to properly invest in something when I know alot about it.. so having FDM to start seems like the way I may go

    • @zemerick
      @zemerick 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ivangutowski If you don't NEED the size, you could get an Elegoo Mars for about $190 us to try out how SLA works, then if it's good for you invest in something better.
      SLA does tend to cost more than FDM, but it has also come down a lot. It's a bit hard to directly compare though, as there are lots of factors on both sides.
      The simplest though is material price. I'm not too familiar with FDM, but last I heard was something around $15-20 / KG.
      Most resins are $35-45 / kg, but some are just $25 or so. ( And can be perfectly good, such as Siraya Tech Simple. )
      Outside of the basic resins though, price can indeed absolutely soar. There are resins that are in the hundreds of dollars per KG.
      I prefer Elegoo and Siraya Tech for my resin.

      I have a question. Can this Model of 3D Printer, print in color? I just see the grey colored resin's? That would really be worth the money if it could do that! I'm not saying it's bad in any way, and the scale and definition this resin printer achieves is astounding! But, color would put it over the top. Thanks for a great video, Norm and Crew! Stay safe!

    I've had a photon for years, and just upgraded to the Mono X (and a base Mono) and I love them both! The increased speed and size is absolutely a game changer
    In addition, there's another change that is extremely welcome. My old original photon vented air from the build chamber out of the printer so it produced a lot of fumes. The new mono printers don't do that, so as long as the lid is on there's practically no fumes (it's not a perfect seal, but close). So I'm able to work near them without any trouble.

    If you don't want to use the crappy ass Photon slicer this has been my workflow through Chitubox.
    - Do all your printing prep (Supports, hollowing, adding holes, ect.) in Chitubox.
    - Export the supported model as a STL file.
    - Import your supported model into 3D builder (Free Microsoft software) and repair the file, if needed.
    - Import repaired STL to Photon slicer and slice it up.
    Hope this helps someone. This was my first 3D printer but I did a ton of research while I waited for the printer to get delivered. This work flow has worked flawlessly for me.

    Had one for a week on loan from my neighbor and the only reason why i'm not switching from my CR-10 mod is because i'm perfectly ok with prototyping around the little bits that the resin printers can make from scratch. To me, the precision i've achieved with the CR-10 is far faster and perfectly acceptable vs the whole resin process. That said, if i'd start fresh, i'd likely choose the resin over mine.

This obviously is a segment of the hobby for those with the computing power to manipulate the 3D models (not an older iMac) and a proficiency in 3d jargon, apps, programs, etc. I guess I’ll just buy printed parts from online vendors.

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Norman, this is a great review and I'm glad to see you having fun with this great printer.
    One thing that was missing for me, was to address the use of resins. What's the cost of resins, what different types of resin have you used, and most importantly: do you have options for this printer that are not proprietary? I think that's a big deal for resin printers as many of them may (or may not) have a low price of acquisition, but then the user will be stuck having to buy supplies from that company at a higher price point. Looking forward to more reviews, and thanks for making this video!

    Pro tip I figured out, with it being harder to find isopropyl alcohol. Filter it through a Life Straw. It gets it at least clear again, if not all of the resin out. It what I use for my Form prints. I have a large oil filter hooked up to some rubber tubing clamped to a life straw. It takes a bit to go through, but it's cleaned it better than Britta filters, oil filters or coffee filters by far.

      Well...this IS the "large format" for resin atm. ( There are some slightly larger, but I think they're more in the $1,500 range, and fairly proprietary. )
      Elegoo has teased a "Jupiter" coming eventually though. No details yet.

    • @C-M-E
      @C-M-E 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zemerick Oh no, there's large format printers for the consumer market. The cheap ones are about $2500 at the moment.
      Correction: The Peopoly Phenom MSLA has come down to 2k. Still, original wishlist/desire holds true.

    • @zemerick
      @zemerick 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@C-M-E The Phenom is largely what I was talking about, but it's really still in the same size class as the Mono X / Saturn ( and trades off that slightly larger size with being equally lower detail since it's still only 4k ), and then being twice the price you were mentioning.
      Things in the SLA space are definitely moving fast though. It was only about a year ago I bought a Mars on sale for $260, and now they're $190 base price, with multiple variants. If Elegoo could manage a similar improvement to the Saturn, that would put it at around $365 in a year, leaving lots of room for a well priced Jupiter.

    I'm curious about odors. What kind of stink do the resins make? How do those odors compare to printing ABS on an FDM printer, for example.

    • @jasperb9233
      @jasperb9233 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You really don’t want to stay in a room with the printer for too long. It is a very unpleasant smell, but it really also depends on the resin you use. Don’t cheap out on resin. The higher end resins have less odours and better print quality.

    • @cinnamoncookies
      @cinnamoncookies 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Anycubic resin smells pretty bad but the Siraya Fast Grey he's using in the video isn't bad at all. You still need lots of ventilation though, especially since your prints will be going straight into alcohol for cleaning afterwards.

    • @zemerick
      @zemerick 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elegoo resins also have pretty low odor. It's a fairly typical plastic smell, and in normal use with a lower odor resin is completely trivial. For comparison, IPA / Acetone are orders of magnitude worse.

    • @christianpoynter7971
      @christianpoynter7971 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It also depends on the printer. My old original Anycubic photon vented air from the build chamber out of the printer so it produced a lot of fumes. The new mono printers don't do that, so as long as the lid is on there's practically no fumes (it's not a perfect seal, but close). So I'm able to work near them without any trouble.

      Been using this printer for 3 weeks. As a first time user I had difficulty getting the prints to stick to the plate. I was using anycubic resin and 70% of the prints weren't adhering. I switched over to Siraya after someone on reddit recommended I try a different resin, and I've been having 100% success. I setup a station in my garage so smells aren't an issue. It smells, but honestly the IPA smells worse than the resin imo. Overall, I love it and the quality is amazing. Shoutout to Eastman for his amazing busts... Deadpool, Darth, etc...

    Toward the end of the vid I was wondering about how long you could use the IPA before you had to change it and could you filter out the particulate resin and reuse the alcohol. 5 seconds later you told us how you do it!!!!! An informative review of the MONO X, and a nicely instructive vid for general mono printing. Now get your your hands on the Elegoo Saturn and review that. THANKS!!!!!

    Thanks for uploading this video, I found it very informative. The first 3d printer I bought for myself is a Voxelab Aquilla and I do love it. I wanted to get another 3d printer that does resin and after watching this video I am pretty much sold on this one. I print a lot of Deadpool items for my friends and to sell just for fun, I also make my own designs and print them. I am looking forward to getting my resin 3d printer.

    From watching you work you really need to pull the vat out and clean things up as you dripped some resin right onto the screening surface as it dripped right down the side of the vat. I find it best to move the build plate away from the machine as quickly as possible and also raise the build plate about 20 mm higher than you did giving yourself room to work. On the clean up get Photo's wash and cure station as that makes short work of cleaning up the prints. Then I found that it's okay to wash the build plate, resin vat, and all other parts with Dawn soap and a fine sponge, but always dry the build plate and resin vat with a microfiber towel. Don't use normal paper towels as they will scratch the FEP making it hazy causing it to not print with the clarity we all love about these resin printers.
    Now I also noticed that you didn't cover the wash container which means someone like me needs to tell you that Alcohol is anhydrous meaning substances like this will actually pull moister out of the air in to them so keep things covered as best you can to avoid this better for the life of the Alcohol.

    Your telling me I wasted money on the ANYCUBIC PHOTON S as my first? Literally picked it up last night...and now I think I should of waiting for this.

    • @zenny1329
      @zenny1329 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the photon S is still a powerful tool. I purchased a Mono X because of their easter sale but I still plan to run my original photon regularly. The mono screens are faster but they're still going to require multiple hours for prints. Also, the Photon S may be older but that also means it's going to have greater support. People have used it more than the newer monos so you're bound to find more support articles for trouble shooting and should run into less issues when following said guides.

    • @Voidmonster
      @Voidmonster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simple Green is actively bad with the Siraya Tech resins. It makes the prints gummy. However, denatured alcohol works great. I found mine at Woodcraft.

    3D printers are so cheap these days, and that's not to mention the deals you can get. I just bought this printer on sale for half price and it's my first SLA printer. Can't wait to try it.

      Just got one free, result of a Ebay purchase gone wrong, so will likely sell it cheap. I purchased a used Anycubic Mega X FDM printer, and the seller shipped this by mistake. Several exchanges later looks like I get a refund and get to keep it...
      Just too much involved for me not being into printing quality miniatures or jewelry, etc.

    • @funx24X7
      @funx24X7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brianmi40 completely understandable, other than setting up the machine it’s a lot more demanding than FDM printers.
      I will say it’s almost worth the trouble to get a nice clear print, and it’s also great for making mold patterns which is my primary use case.

    • @brianmi40
      @brianmi40 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@funx24X7 For sure, since it's free, and appears never assembled (great buys on Ebay as "unrepairs" which are customer returns to Amazon), I may keep it and play with it at some point. Watching some videos, as their latest Mono X 6K model with the 9" screen it's a solid printer...

    I was actually surprised at the $760 price tag. I used to be a Lab Tech for my colleges 3D Printing lab and can remember shopping out printers like afinia that were thousands of dollars and not even in the ball park of 0.01 layer thickness. And this was only 4ish years ago.

    • @overbehindunder
      @overbehindunder 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The technology is advancing really quickly - the smaller SLA printers prior to this used OEM screens which were very cheap and the solution to the pricing problem, whereas these newer 'mono' printers are FAR better performance and more tailored to the technology.

    • @zemerick
      @zemerick 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Elgoo Saturn will be just $500! And 200 people got one for just $400 after shipping.
      Note though that with mSLA printers, layer thickness doesn't mean much. The real factor is the pixel pitch, in this case .05mm.
      Oh, and that's only because these are large format monochrome versions. Standard RGB screened printers are only about $190 for the same detail level.

  • @fakiirification
    @fakiirification 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    remember that the LCD screen itself is a consumable in these printers. 1000-2000 hours expected life. So load up that build plate every time to get your full moneys worth before needing to swap screens
