Dawn French should be very proud of this interview. You really get to see exactly what makes this great comic tick. Joan Rivers wasn't just the vanguard of women stand up comics she continued to her dying day, which tragically came too damn soon, to be the finest in her profession. Yes, she could make you gasp in shock ("Did she really just say that?!") but you always laughed hard and long with her. Too insecure to accept how great her contribution was/is, everyone she touched knew she was the real deal--FUNNY!!
I’ve watched a LOT of Joan over the years but this Is honestly the first time I’ve ever seen her just so relaxed which Is wonderful. I think Dawn brings out the best In people she’s fantastic 🥰
I missed this when it was broadcast and was just BESIDE myself so I'm so grateful you put it up! It was a very quick 30 minutes though - apart from being naturally hilarious Joan Rivers has such a humanity and wisdom I could just listen to her all night
Watching this has only made me want to work harder. I dont want to end up at the back of a mac donald counter or working as a cashier. I want to be a stand-up comedian and a fashion designer. Joan Rivers is my idole for comedy and Valentino is my idol for fashion. Joan brings funny to the table, and I've modeled myself off her. My friends want to be the next Angelinia Jolie, I want to be the Joan river knockoff. The asian Joan river knock, that sounds right.
This is the time of year that I really miss Joan, awards season. I would love to hear her thought on the Grammy's turn out, she would have torn them a new one.
I love Joan while finding her challenging. I've come to appreciate her much more than I was younger. Not sure how much is my opinion changing, or her having moved past the jokes about Yoko Ono being ugly, Brooke Shields being stupid, etc., which I found frustrating at the time. Now I find her humor wonderfully biting. It's a little hard to watch this interview since she sounds like someone carrying a lot of pain. Bless her.
@robzrob well if ur taking it that much to heart.. it will hurt.. but its comedy.. they are jokes.. u are not supposed to take them seriously.. or do u just always listen to what people say about you.. she says the things she does to get a laugh.. keep that in mind..
Kathy Griffin talked about the sexism in the TV industry (and comedy), and how NBC flat out told her that they won't do a comedy centered around a woman. Comedy Central doesn't sound much better. It's amazing to read such things going on still, so it makes me wonder how Joan and Phyllis Diller every broke in.
Kathy Griffin was literally on an NBC sitcom that centered around a woman played by Brook Shields, called Suddenly Susan. NBC also had Caroline in the City starring Lea Thompson even before that.
yes really great interview, but honestly i think joan is pretty both oudside and in, wish i had that balance that she has, i feel ugly and now it could be wourse but how do you change that. i think only time will tell. cheerio
@techpops I don't know - I'm in 2 minds, I suppose. Jo Brand has a good rule, I think it's something like: 'I would never mock anybody for something that they can't help being/doing.'
@robzrob nah i dont agree. joans a comedian. first rule, you make fun of things.. people + its an art.. and like she said.. she only makes jokes about those who have success .. thats normal good natured. its not like shes hitting people when their down and out. + its comedy... ur suppose to dig at people
At one point in this interview Dawn French slightly wrinkles her nose when Joan acknowledges that more often than not women who do comedy are not generally pretty women. I totally understand why she would respond like this but in another interview from the same series with Victoria Woods, where Victoria says basically the same thing but not as directly, Dawn nods and more or less agrees. It just really strikes me how much prejudice Joan had to deal with because of her Americaness and her Jewishness and her forthright independence as a woman. I also think that people who don't understand her comedy are often people invested in ignoring the dark side of the human mind. Dawn is a very funny comedian and I greatly love her work, but her humour rarely dips into the truly abject and I think in this interview, she dips between empathy and condescension with Joan.
I've seen the show she's talking about on English TV. I don't know why she thinks that her own insecurities make it OK to poke fun of other people, and justify it as " I hate myself cos Im fat and ugly so I'll poke fun at everyone", but it's not funny and never is. People are cool about themselves, Joan, nobody was thinking this show was awful or funny. They were looking at it as a show about transcending obstacles or whatever, but you used it, like you used everyone, as a target of ridicule. Not cool and not funny. I never laughed at her. Swearing and being shocking, it's not funny.
You've missed the point entirely. She was not making fun of the show's contestants. She was pointing out the absurdity and cruelty of the producers of the show offering up people with a disability. Grow up

Excellent interview. The questions were great and original. I wish more interviewers were like this.
best interview I've ever seen of one of the great queens of stand up comedy. rest in peace joan rivers.
Joan Rivers could make me cry with laughter and giggle for days. She was outrageous and hilarious. RIP.
Greatest interview of joan rivers I've ever seen
Love and miss her. She made me laugh at the toughest of times.
Dawn asks some excellent questions!!!
"You're outta here FRANK!!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dawn couldnt breathe! 🤣
She is the Queen of Comedy, but I love the fact she doesnt feel that way about herself, its part of her charm!
I love you, Joan Rivers.

The best joke: the deaf man couldn't hear people voting him off. It's just hilarious. I love you Joan.
Brilliant questions. Amazing answers

One of the Greatest Human that was here on this Planet. Pure Love.
Dawn French is such a great interviewer... Rip Joan ❤️ (same name as my nan)
Amazing interview. I never knew Joan Rivers was incredibly insecure but I still think she's a legend.
She is very humble!!!!
She has always been!!! And now you are gone ;-(
I missed this when it was broadcast and was just BESIDE myself so I'm so grateful you put it up!

She reminds me of myself in a way.how she sources jokes , she jokes about herself
Why on earth doesnt she have a Sit com.
Would be hillarious.
do you think that when Dawn doesn't agree with something, she'll say: "that's interesting"?
The world is little darker n less funny without joan rivers

She was so insecure but amazing!!! RIP you goddess
@robzrob
there are no rules homie..
only good taste
I adore this lady for her to think she’s achieved nothing is sad to me.. she’s so wrong
@ssips720 'she only makes jokes about those who have success ..' - what about the 'Old People' and 'Ugly People' routines, then?
@ssips720 anything goes, then?
@robzrob
nah i dont agree. joans a comedian. first rule, you make fun of things.. people

I'm afraid of, liking old comments. I think they are dead
I've gone off her. She knows that she lacks confidence and that she's hurt if she's mocked, but thinks other people should just take it.
I always thought Joan was very attractive
