The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section passes under the River Hooghly, on the east and west banks of which are situated Kolkata and Howrah City.

The construction of East West Metro started way before Modi came to power in 2014. Initial planning and adaption of the project was done between 2004 and 2009. In 2011, the project was handed over to the Indian Railways. It was not a smooth going since then. Due to some major setbacks like slum relocation, technical glitches, route realignment etc, the project got delayed. Unfortunately the railway authority of India also does not bother to move fast to complete the project. All the metro projects in Kolkata suffer due to this kind of attitude. The construction works started atleast a decade ago but not completed yet. Only 6 pairs of trains ply on weekdays between Joka and Taratala (a fragmented section of JOKA-BBD Bag Metro Project). No commercial service available on Saturdays and Sundays. There is no metro service on Sundays in the operational section of East-West Metro as well. Can you believe these?

@@swastickbasumallick4696 You are correct. And you must agree that things are atleast moving now. New Garia - Airport route work is also moving in a fast pace. The Nashipur rail bridge took 20 years to complete but majority work(95%) was done in last 3 years.

Esplanade station is this large as a third line (Purple Line) is also going to merge. Already Blue Line is there.. so, in total 3 lines will merge in Esplanade.

This project was passed during UPA govt in 2009..but until 2016 no work was done.. It was ultimately Modiji who took it on priority and finished the job.. Salute🙏
