Big respect to the student protesters. Does anyone remember that fiasco in a place called Vietnam or the the segregated township of Soweto or Sharpeville, South Africa, it was the protesting of global college youths that brought about the end to the war, killings ,segregation and apartheid government. They actually do not have the constitutional right to free speech on a private piece of property :) the land owner is free to kick you out at any time for any reason. If you don’t, it’s known as trespassing.
You *do* have the right to protest on the public sidewalk or park.

Not all the schools are private, most are public. Like UCLA is public, they do have a right to protest.
All that said - being arrested for trespassing during peaceful protests is almost as prolific as college protests themselves. We as a society do not learn from history, if we did then we wouldn't see police arresting students on college campuses because 9/10 times it's the police causing the violence rather than the protestors (the folks having poetry readings) being violent.
And just because you are arrested for trespassing doesn't mean your position or your protest is immoral or unethical. Sit-ins for examplehave a long history of arrests, MLK Jr. was arrested more than once for peaceful protests.

Most of the Universities and Colleges involved are public not private and even the private Universities stipulate that student protests are allowed unless a student is suspended. This is why Columbia was until today allowing the encampment but had locked the gates to outside protesters. None of this matters anyway because everytime the "landowners" use their fascist gestapo to tear down an encampment hundreds of other students set up camp elsewhere on the property in their place.

I am revolted by the city and college administrations that can't find a way to shut down these protests by offering them a way to protest via DISCUSSION and by committing to the protection of the actual safety of all students, no matter what their opinions or identities.
*Universities exist to exchange ideas. Make it safe and possible. That is the job.*

Kind of seems like campuses should have largely ignored these protests. A lot of universities are near the end of their academic calendar.

Yup, because the Palestinian - Israeli conflict certainly is the latest thing. It's not like it's been going on since 1948.
Our Constitution protects the right to assemble and to petition (ask) the Government to hear and fix grievances. It's right up there in the First Amendment, which everyone is fond of.
College students are not kids. They are almost always 18+ years old and better informed about the ongoings of the world than most other US adults. University administrations would be wise to listen to and heed their student's demands.

Progress through protest, yes. If one is arrested however, it was no longer a protest. Some other factor came into play for these students to be arrested as they have. Trespassing perhaps. Possibly even disturbing the peace and/or disorderly conduct.
Again, and there is a LOT of history to support the objective fact, these "protests" never result in the effect desired by those involved. The use of quotations being key.
I spoke no lies. I merely pointed out something very important which each generation ends up learning for themselves.
Our constitution is very clear. We have the right to free speech and protest. Only not on private property unless authorized by the property owner, along with several other rules of conduct. Well, these places of education are not public property.
That means that on day one minute two, it was no longer a protest.
Each generation misunderstands the strict constraints which classifies such a gathering as an actual protest. As a result, many face prosecution and/or jail. All while the thing they opposed or wanted changed remains unchanged.
While I too want ALL war to end the planet over, none of these arrests will have any effect on any of the nations currently at war. Everything will continue as it is. While the ONLY result of their actions will be lost classes, fines, and very potential expulsion from the center of learning.

Secret time: There was violence among the "protests". That is why the arrests. Not to mention the criminal trespassing on private property.
One is allowed by Constitutional law to protest. However, one is not allowed to violate established law in the process. If they would have remained on public property, colleges would have simply cashed tuition checks and enjoyed the short break in daily routine. If there would have been no violence, the need for police intervention would not have been as important.
There are correct, law abiding means to protest. Then there are these "protests". They had a very good goal. Only they stopped reading after getting to the sentence they liked and did not have a working understanding of the difference between protest and unlawful activity.

There was a cease-fire before Hamas attacked. They view cease-fire has an opportunity to re-arm and re-organize for the next attack.
And Isreal and the IDF sees that as a way to perform land grabs. I won't compare massacres, but at some point this all needs to stop and Isreal has the upper hand to make it so.
Izreall would love to have a ceasefire. But it's hard for them to turn down tens of billions in juicy aid.
