If a child did this, they would be sent to therapy. The fact that a grown woman not only did it, but thinks it’s something to brag about, is absolutely bonkers.

At 14 months old, that dog was still in puppy mode!! If she couldn't handle the dog, there are shelters, other families that would adopt that dog as a pet, not a hunting dog, or have it trained to be a hunting dog!!! It doesn't come naturally, how to only point at the pheasants, they have to be taught, and she obviously didn't take the time to have that dog trained properly!!!!! Then she killed a billy goat, because it smelled.....well, trump better steer clear of her, because he's definitely "untrainable" for politics, and he smells awful, according to people around him!!!!

She didn't describe though what she did with the dead corpses of the dog and the goat: buried, burnt, rendered? How did she sleep that night, when a family member is gone by her hands? Also, how it is easy to say, "I love hunting from my childhood." She is some dangerous basic instincts and God forbid she gets near the Oval Office to make war decisions on behalf of the country.
The anecdote about killing the neighbors cat then feeding it to him was so vicious & cruel. Can see why Trump would choose her as a running mate.

My opinion of Mika Brzezinski just went up 1,000% after hearing the story about her chickens. I already knew she was a smart journalist but now I know for a fact that she is a uniquely compassionate, wise, and moral person.

I'm pet sitting for my friends two fourteen month old australian healers. They are still mentally puppy-like in alot of ways and very much in the training stage. Most dogs aren't fully mature until they're 2 to 3 years old.

My grandfather was a shepherd in the Scottish Highlands, collie dogs and hounds were part of the farm life, not once was a puppy put down ever.
He knew how to train and care for them and took responsibility no doubt. Noem expected this 14 month old pup to train itself by watching other dogs. First hunt he embarrassed her, then the chickens. She HATED the dog. That was it. What a vile person.

Training a pup requires love and patience, if you do it the right way, not with cruelty. Much like governing a country, one would hope. The fact that she put this dog in the too hard basket as not trainable shows she is absolutely not suited to governing anything at all.

Had a neighbor who had two dogs of terrier mixed with ? I warned her that her dogs were trying to dig under the steel fence I had put up. She threw loose dirt into the hole. Two days later I hear a ruckus in my chicken coop. Her dogs were in my chicken coop. Only one hen was damaged before I got out there and threw them out of the coop. I yelled for her to come get her dogs or I would drown them in my goldfish pond (I wouldn't but she didn't know that). Only one hen was hurt. part of her breast was torn open. I treated her and she outlived all of my other hens I had in that group. Her name was Effie. I now have Tanya and Tallulah, Australorp hens,; Uma and Ursula,: two barred rock hens and one little Production Blue hen named Veronica. My hens give us their eggs and then they live as retirees for the rest of their lives. My hens love me because I give them dried mealworms and bugs. I also have 4 dogs. Wendy and Surprise are my 16 year Tibetan Spaniels, they are from the same litter and two other small dogs who had a Chihuahua mother who seems to have had many other dogs. One looks like a wire-haired Wheaten Terrier ;and his littermate who looks like a Min Pin. Their names are Rico and Ponce. Spot the cat owns me. The dogs love him.
Once I was forced to have to give away my dog because of a divorce. The thought of killing my pet was never a thought. Unthinkable is what such a thought was. Instead, I took her to a shelter and paid for her to be taken care of until she was adopted. I wasn’t in there for more than 5 minutes before a couple came to me that was there to adopt a dog. So I gave her to them with them granting me permissions to come visit her when I got my living arrangements squared away.
She lived a wonderful life with that couple until she was 20 years old and was always happy to see me when I came to visit.
That’s what a normal person does. A sociopath is the kind of person that shots their own dog for no good reason. Just for being annoying. That’s an insane person with zero regard for life.
Noem can't be trusted with our politics now.

Mica, please, PLEASE share this story more widely because the important point is one that I haven’t heard yet: You accepting the responsibility for leaving the gate open because your dog was doing what it is natural for the dog to do. Why did those “friends” of hers not see that- and left their chickens accessible?! Something sounds ‘fishy’ about that….

Fellow chicken & dog owner here. Love the Mika's been bit by the bird bug.
We got Candy, a sweet new puppy - five months old and very shy and gentle. The day we brought her home from the Humane Society, she stepped out of the car and looked instantly bemused by the chickens free ranging around the yard. Within seconds she wriggled out of her harness - yes, she was leashed and in a harness! - and charged off into the thickest cluster of our girls, frantically slapping them with her paws and trying to catch one in her jaws.
After darting around after her for a minute or so, I managed to catch her, scoop her up and bring her inside. I talked to her a long time - that I understood she's wired to chase those funny things, but they're her sisters and that's a no-no. That night, I went out with her and got a properly fitting harness and retractable leash.
The next day we started a few weeks of training that I called "Chicken Zen". I'd take her out on a short leash to the coop yard. We plopped down on the ground right in the middle of the flock and I'd hold on to Candy, with my arm around her shoulders to gauge her reaction.
Being naturally curious and social, the chickens eventually surrounded us, picking and scratching, and checking us out.
Any time Candy started to get up, I'd hold her down and tell her no, then pat her when she calmed down. Any time I felt her start to prep to lunge, I'd hold her tight and tell her no, then pat her when she calmed down. Any time I'd feel her shoulders tighten, I'd give her a big backrub and tell her no. When she would finally calm all the way down and lay down, I'd tell her how good she was and give her a treat.
Within a few days, she listened to my commands to leave them alone if she forgot and started to get excited. Within a couple of weeks, we could let her out amongst the chickens. Six years later, she still hangs with the flock and takes dust baths with them.
Compassion can be taught, even to dogs. But you need to have it to teach it.

Yes! This is the normal way to respond to a story like this. Normal, empathetic humans, across the board are horrified at any animals being unnecessarily hurt. Also, the normal response is for the human to recognize their errors and how they created the situation.

TBF, the cruelty wasn't the point. Noem was trying to claim that her executing these animals (poor Cricket in front of horrified construction workers) proves that she can make "tough" decisions, when it just showed that she's heartless and takes the easy way out when faced with challenges. "I hated that dog" and "worthless" when talking about a 14-month-old big puppy tells me all I need to know about Noem.
Killing a dog out of spite is not a tough decision, it's callousness. People having to decide between paying the electric bill or buying food is a tough decision. Or having to move out of your apartment because you can't afford it, and having no where to go is a tough decision. I had to move out of my apartment in 2001 in that circumstance,and lived in a hotel for a week before a friend graciously allowed me to move in for 6 months.Noem chose herself over her dog,which makes her unfit to lead anything.

doesnt she also attack Natives and the reservations? look I had a cat that got cancer and she was 16 usealy the type of cat she was doesnt live past 14 or 15. we took her to the vet one night and found out she wouldnt be able to have a good quality of life they gave us two options expensive medicine that would just more then likely pro long her suffering or we could put her down.. Trust me I cried like this little furry creature was our child. We made the hardest desicion and let the vet end her suffering I know we made the right choice but man even 5 years later is stings sometimes. I seen my grandpa put a dog down that was old couldnt walk couldnt eat and I never seen that man cry like he did that day the dog got bitten by a rattle snake and we had no 24 hr vet and the poor little guy just wouldnt survive. I say all this to say I cant imgainge them people like this this Noem lady not being even a little bit upset. I cant even watch the dang commercials with the poor animals who are being rescued with out tearing up. I just will never understand Hurting Animals and Children at all
