This song originally required at least four lads. TMBG did it at much greater efficiency with half as many lads. Now, we can all celebrate that musical accomplishment in high quality.
@@masonbarrett4144 This isn't an original TMBG song. It's just a cover. It was originally performed by a band called "the four lads" in 1953! I was really surprised when I found this out!
When they were children, my mom managed to convince her youngest sister (the weirder of my two aunts) that the line was "even old New York was once New Hamsterdam".
The Four Lads version - A fun quartet song about the city of Constantinople. They Might Be Giants version - A modernized version with a more artsy touch, perfect for when it was written. The Residents version - Constantinople doesn’t exist anymore, and soon neither will you.

Wasn't the city itself called Constantinople from its founding? I know the kingdom (empire?) was called Byzantium but I thought the actual city was named after Constantine the great (then later unofficially changed to Istanbul after the ottoman's took over with it much later becoming the official name).
I went to a tiny branch campus for college. Occasionally I would travel to Penn State Main campus for football games, and party. The city was like another world. Every house, and apartment had a party going on. This band with accordian couldn’t be farther from that. You could call them nerd rock, but I still love them.
