  • Come along to The Lonely Mountain with me and climb another active volcano.
Mt. Taranaki is one of my favourite places in New Zealand, the stunning mountain is 2519m and contains several beautiful hikes. One of them, the summit climb is shown in this video. It's a difficult 8-10hr climb, covering around 1600m up and down again. It's challenging for fit hikers, but rewards with stunning 360° views on top.
This was this years easter activity for me :)

Excellent video Kiara. I was born in taranaki and climbed it once but we went up to the Tahurangi Hut in the early afternoon, stayed there and left at 3am to go to summit. We were up there for sunrise. The route around the Sharks tooth into the crater is very different now to back in 1966 when i climbed it. very sentimental to me.
good luck with all your travels.😁

Thank you very much for your lovely comment 😊 I can imagine it to be awesome, being up there for sunrise! Maybe that's gonna be my third time going to the summit when I'm back in New Zealand at some point.
The name sharks tooth is very fitting for that corner!

Not a glacier sorry, just snow, comes and goes annually. Falls, melts, repeat

I'm very surprised to see it without much snow at the top. I was there late December 2022 and at the time it was looking more like your 2019 photo. Crazy that it melted off in only a couple of months.

Oh that is so interesting to hear! I was literally so excited to get to the glacier and then very disappointed to see it nearly completely gone. Crazy you say that a year before it was still there! Thank you for that comment 😊👍

Das ist doch der Einsame Berg, in dem Smaug gehaust hat! Das Gold der Zwerge ist wohl inzwischen verschüttet. Naja, ist ja schon lange her.
