Congratulations on your new pup! I’m a new subber so I need to catch up on past vids but man was this vid on time for me!!! My current SDiT is a wonderful pup & I luv her but I’m on the verge of washing her😭. I also believe in adopting not shopping (my 1st SD was rescued & she was phenomenal). My sweet pup was an emotional pick, I was hoping w/enough luv/patience/time her shyness would resolve - boy was I wrong!!! We’ve been doing PA work for a yr w/o problems - then suddenly she started acting fearful of things & places she had been comfortable with previously. (she’s 3 yrs old so too old for norm fear stages, since we’re together 24/7, I’m confident that she has not had any kind of traumatic experience). We have a vet appt next wk to make sure nothing health wise is going on, then if cleared we’ll get an eval from our trainer and then…..? (I’m still paying off her initial training!) Her happiness is the most important factor - I won’t make her work if she doesn’t want to & she will not be rehomed but I will be BUMMED!!! Thx for letting me vent - I’m so stressed!🐾

My first SD was also a rescue. Amazing dog! Did not quite make it to full SD, hated shiny floors lol but would sleep through fireworks! It is totally frustrating to wash out a dog you have put a ton of time and money into. But you have the right mind set! If he doesn’t enjoy the work, don’t force him. I would do a ton of research on “burn out” something I knew nothing about till my 2nd SD and I almost burned her out. My best advice is step back. Do some fun bonding stuff and then slowly go back to PA. I believe it’s Susan Garrett has an amazing article on 2nd dog syndrome. Which is a bit connected to burn out. Basically your used to a trained dog and you forget all the little things you did with your first dog and skip them with the Second dog. I definitely did this and is why I’m going super slow with my 3rd SD. I hope you enjoy the series!!
