Thanks for watching ❤ Are you going to make your dream game or follow me and make a few smaller games first?

Man, resisting the temptation to make a really good / big game is so difficult. I applaud your plan to make manageable games and save your best ideas for when your skills have developed enough to do your dream game justice.

Right!? It's the same as the small voice tell you to add more scope to the project... "just one more feature, what's the worst that could happen".. dang scope creepers ;)

That's a really good strategy, it's always better to have a few smaller game to the portfolio instead one big but unfinished.
    Cute cat!

You're making some great points, it's some of the thoughts I have when i see my recommended page flooded with "My dream game" type videos. Usually I'm thinking you're either lying, aiming too low or too high. I wish the game dev community could come up with a new term that would elicit the same emotional response as "my dream game" but where it's implicit that the game you're building is a stepping stone.

For sure, and like I said... I was part of the problem. I think we get "this game is my dream game" mixed up with the true feeling of "my dream is to make a game". Thanks for watching and the great comment :)

my reason for why _i_ don't make my dream game is that
what my dream game is always changes much faster than i can finish any game

when I started gamedev I picked puzzle games, a genre I never enjoyed, hoping to make changes on things I didn't like. Now it's my favorite genre to play and make in

to this day, I say: make stuff in genres you don't enjoy. And also specialize in one genre to make the best possible game

Some inspiring shit, I like it! Made me remember how I tried to create Dead Cells couple of years ago, took me 3 months to make someting simillar with tons of frustation in process and nowdays, I can make that bloody statemachine in a day or so. I guess I'll sub.

"My dream game" vs "Game I wish existed" 😂 one sounds a lot better, and to me both mean the same thing

Oh yeah, all good TH-cam videos (or heck any content) need a healthy dose of clickbait. It's like saying "I don't judge a book by it's cover" ... have you seen book covers these days!? They are crazy cool to look at and I totally grab the ones that look interesting. I don't blame anyone for using sensationalized language in their videos (I did and do it myself), but calling your game a Dream Game seems like we're just setting ourselves up for failure. Anyways, thanks for watching.. good luck on your journey!! Cheers :)

Supergiant didnt know they were going to make hades from the beginning. They were looking for new ideas at that point and did a lot of research into greek myth.
    Still good points.

Zach and Tarn Adams have been building their dream game and they've been doing it for over a decade. Measure that number against how long you expect to live and decide if you think that's worth it.

That's an interesting take on the subject, and I totally agree with you! I think it's a better idea to build the knowledge by releasing smaller games before committing to something big.
As I've told you, I wanted to make a video on the subject, but I was going to approach it differently. It's not that I think there's a time for a dream game, but more than the idea of a dream game doesn't resonate with me. As an indie, I'm a business and I don't want to be dreaming. I want to stay realistic and also detached from my ideas. Having a dream game sound a bit scary to me because you put so much hope into a single project. If it works, great.. but it might be hard to work on the next game after that. If it doesn't, you might be devastated. This doesn't mean I don't have ideas that I think are awesome but unattainable for now, more than I don't want to dream about them, I want to be realistic. I don't know if it make sense.

    • @Aarimous
      @Aarimous  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

1000% agree, I think Jotson talked about this on his stream. His goal was to find a game idea that was right in the sweet spot between games he wants to make & play(test) and games players will actually want to play.

  • @nomadshiba

didnt watch the video yet but i think this one is gonna be about making money and finding players and stuff etc
    releasing on steam and stuff
EDIT: changes based on why do you code a game, you can code because you dont wanna die before building it, or you can code in hopes for finding players and some money. there can be both too but one has to be stronger always.
also i think you cant develop your skills for something bigger without building bigger things. you can either build and finish small things and get good at it, or you write something big then fail and then code it again, then fail, then remake it again, then fail, then remake it again then fail, then you have something that is actually cool and you have learned a lot, then remake it again even better, then remake it again and get closer to almost perfect every time.
building small games is like building web front-end, building big games is like building big scale back-end. getting used building smaller games might make it harder to build bigger ones.
but changes based on your background. also building smaller games might help you design games, if you care about selling it.

I just started making game 3 days ago and I agree with you. Making dream game especially for the first project can be brutal. It will probably take long time to make and most likely it will be bad.
I am currently making 2D Psychological Adventure game which I actually like as a genre, but it is not my dream game at all. My dream game would be Zelda-like or monster taming RPG like Pokémon, which I will never make.

    • @Aarimous

That's awesome, welcome to the game dev journey. I think most of our dream games would be best made by a bigger studio as opposed to a solo indie dev. Good luck out there! Cheers :)

So I've been into making games since I was 8, these games back then where total garbage. Then when I was 13 I actually picked up actual useful programming knowledge when modding minecraft. Then spended some years doing visual effects & animation untill I felt like picking up my gamedev dream. I've now been working on one single game for 5 years, the fact that it's my dream game makes me wanna work on it on daily basis, unlike my old office job where I had to program boring websites and apps about boring ideas. I do a parttime job out of my field on the side. doesn't make me a lot of money, but it does allow me to spend my time doing what I like
