That's because Toph's blindness becomes invisible to them just due to how well she carries herself. The only reason Azula remembers is because she looks for people's weaknesses to exploit them (e.g. the volleyball game "she hesitates with he left foot, aim for her left"). Even though we know that it really isn't that much of a weakness for Topg, Azula would remember it.

The best thing about Tophs character is that the writers are so self conscious about her blindness and aren't afraid of making jokes about it, Dark humor is Fun, Toph looks at it all the time.
Tbf, Toph's seismic sense means she can sometimes function with greater situational awareness than the rest of the Gaang, so it's not exactly unexpected for them to occasionally forget she can't see, when she can occasionally "see" better than they can.
2:09 I genuinely love how Toph doesn’t even miss a beat and passes the scroll to Katara instantly, but at the same time, Katara knew right away and was ready to read it for her. It’s the little things that make this show great
I love how half the jokes involve the characters flat-out forgetting that she's blind. It's a real testament to how capable she is, it's almost like she doesn't even have a disability!

Especially when many disabilities are genuinely debilitating. It makes it harder for disabled people to get the assistance they may need when everyone encourages others to think of disability as a "strength". Disabilities can be coped with, but they're not strengths. What makes someone strong is inside them, not outward things like disabilities.
@@sawyerharris3721 I'd have to agree here. I understand the counter culture of disabilities (kind of like the love your body movement), but having it be your "strength" is outright wrong. Embracing your weak points is good and all, but trying to do so in a way by saying it makes you stronger is just painting the disability in a different light rather than accepting it. Disabilities put people through hardships and that's what makes people stronger, not the disability itself.
I like how when Toph is pointing out how bad of an idea it would be for her to control an airship, she actually looks excited and maybe even a little hopeful, and when Sokka clarifies that he was talking to Suki she almost looks disappointed

I think its because they respect her so much they overlook her blindness. There are plenty of moments where she can see so they forget the smaller moments where she can't. Like with reading and writing. They forget in a good way.

I have a friend with stargardts and so she's not completely blind but she is legally blind and cannot see as well and sometimes you really just forget.
Honestly Toph doesn’t mind, she knows Katara wasn’t purposely trying to hurt her feelings. You get friends like that sometimes, they seem like the mean one of the group, but sometimes they’re the only ones there for you.
There's literally no other way to perform long distance communication. It would be assumed that Toph is with people who can at least see, because they treat her like someone who can't sense the earth.

I kinda love that they forgot it. It's not that they don't know Toph. They know her. They know her as agood friend, they know that she is independent, that she doesn't need help from anyone, so obviously they don't think that something as normal as writing would be problematic. Like she's our badass Toph, of course she can write, she can do anything. They know her as a full functioning person and thus they keep forgetting that there's actually something she's just not able to do.

@@theuniversalhitchhiker1961 Well, they DO have a alphabet system (well more like a ideograph system with phonetic equivalents but it's the same thing) but, as blind people would be considered 'useless' in the setting, no one would have made an effort to make a system where they can at least read. Bas relief seems to exist though, so Toph can at least experience some art by touching or sensing it.
@@liamjm9278 Because, Braille is older than Wheelchairs, and this series has tanks and even a drill the size of half of the equivalent of the Great Wall of China. There should already be an equivalent of Braille if you think about it.
If iirc she’s been blind since she can remember. It’s not as bad if she doesn’t know how much she’s really missing on. It would be cold of she lost her vision after seeing the world because them she’d know exactly how much she missed out on.

Amanda Fodera well, in the episode, Toph was being selfish and not helping with anything. Katars was mad about it, and since they used sleeping bags instead of tents, they could see the stars. It makes perfect sense for her to forget she was blind, because it doesn’t really make sense for her to point it out in that scenario.

Facts. That is something I just realized and it's a good indicator of not focusing on a disability of a protagonist as a way to subsitute it for actual character or personality for them.

I like how this series doesn’t fully “fix” her blindness with Earthbending. Yes, she can “see” better than normal blind people, but they still show that she still has some drawbacks without her sight...but despite that, she’s still snarky and badass and I love her!!!

I love how both katara and sokka try to show toph a piece of paper by whipping it out in her face and expecting her to read it and give them an answer. And how it was the exact same sheet of paper twice.
Because it's easier for her, the party treats her like one of their own, and Toph Largely isn't hampered by her lack of sight, so it's easy to forget that she Actually lacks sight when you do things you'd normally do in social situations

It's funny because she is so capable on her own, and so strong (strongest earthbender ever) that it's natural that everyone just forgets that she is blind. Heck, there are moments where i forgot she was blind because she is so capable and independent.

Bas relief seems to exist though, so Toph can at least experience some art by touching or sensing it.

Amanda Fodera well, in the episode, Toph was being selfish and not helping with anything. Katars was mad about it, and since they used sleeping bags instead of tents, they could see the stars. It makes perfect sense for her to forget she was blind, because it doesn’t really make sense for her to point it out in that scenario.
