Yep that's no puffer, here in Puerto Rico we call it Chapín.
They are delicious.

Your weird fish was not a pufferfish that was a spotted trunkfish and about largest I have ever seen. A member of the Boxfish family Ostraciidae and a distant cousin to puffers. They can't blow up like a puffer but have a hard rigid body triangular in cross-section. Only their tail and pectoral fins move. BTW, FYI they carry the same tetrodotoxin that puffers have.
