@@johnholland723 I play finger style. I’m 77. I learned at folk festivals, listening to Elizabeth Cotten and Mississippi John Hurt and Gary Davis. I had never even heard of Merle Travis. I did know about Chet Atkins. I did not know about all these other players until six years ago when I started playing with FL snowbirds in a trailer park who come from KY and Indiana and Canada. TH-cam has changed my musical life from when I was 13 and buying sheet music at Presser’s in the next town over in PA. Pressers was a sheet music printer and publisher. That used to be a big thing! And record stores with listening booths where you could buy opened records with finger prints on them.

As Merle Travis’ illegitimate son his career path was sort of chosen for him.
He wanted to stand out to Merle and carry on the legend begun by the Kennedy Jones “Cannonball Rag”. I have a lovely vid of them playing it together on the same guitar at the same time.
A great man. I’m only alive because of him. I still have the fifty year old guitar he left in my hospital. I’ll never let it go.

The greats in this sytle of guitar are almost always very kind and modest. As good as they are, they're in awe like the rest of us of Chet, Jerry, and Merle.

Oh Thom. My Papai Noel. If only you knew it worked; you saved my life. I’m still here. You will be missed at the centenary of the CAAS. I can’t believe it’s been almost two years. I will feel it in May as I did last year.

RIP both. Sucks not having them around. Buster, sure as hell would ve figured new ways to play the guitar had he stayed around a bit more, as he always did, that bloke never let one day go by without evolving his playing. The Breshmen s passing really hurts bad, even to this day. Since this kind of player and entertainer is gone with Thom. Sure we have Tommy Emmanuel, Greg Koch and what not, but those cats arent that deep rooted in the foundations, Greg s a more Danny Gatton- esque and Tommy s more Lenny Breau influenced player. Thom was the last true original from this country guitar picking saga, the player s that pionnered it and kept innovating til their very last breath. Nowadays it's all about being influenced by them without taking it further. A hollow victory, but still a win, cause letting this music disappear would be the worst thing to happen.

@@nathaninostroza7655 you’re just looking at the white finger style. There’s a whole other world out there and Stefan Grossman is that world’s Thom Bresh. He is an academic player. He plays cleaner than the black players that he re-creates but note for note. I met Bresh once in Nashville at a CAAS. Nashville ignores the whole Black side of finger style picking. David Bromberg took lessons from Gary Davis also. You won’t see these players in Nashville and at a CAAS.

@@nathaninostroza7655 what kind of things do you play things like The Glory of Love and Creole Belle. Freight Train. Going Down the Road Feeling Bad. Bluebell. And showtunes. The other day I figured out God bless America finger style! I am not an academic player at all. My first finger on my right hand is pretty much paralyzed from a bad operation so I’m down that finger! Sucks on rolls. But Jerry Reed never played with his index finger either. So that keeps me going. Look at Jerry Reed closely you will see his first finger curled up. He actually plays with the three remaining fingers.

@@robertlee8042 i'm a self taught too, on english and guitar, from chile. I was first attracted to country guitar pickers through Chet Atkins, then i discovered Merle Travis and found such a flavor in the sounds his picking produced. same with Jerry Reed. I put down the country practice for a while since i'm working on My own tunes, rock oriented with strange chords and bendings. But the listening experience and search for new music to learn and inspire from is an always on switch im wired with, i guess. It really is great you're keeping on with playing despite that index finger issue You ve got. More power to You, bro. Finger independency and dexterity isnt a field where everything is said and done, so you're not done, by teaching your other fingers to compensate, it may take more discipline than usual, but it can be done. I saw a pinky, ring, middle, pointer fingering trémolo by a peruvian vals specialist, a chilean friend, in front of me, not on tube. It sounded so neat and it was difficult at first attempt but practice s gonna take us there. I ve got healthy hands, thank god, but the only thing My hands are good is for guitar, u throw me an orange and it's lost forever 😂 i won't catch it. All the best Rob.

They never once acknowledged the audience applause. That’s a real drain on an audience. They didn’t even really interact with the audience. It’s a shame because they are both brilliant players.

Interresting observation.Could he be a little jaded?I think all accompished musicians/performers feel they deserve more applause.I noticed the applause was not that enthusiastic as if it was kind of 'ho-hum'.A kind of agreement the individuals have with each other:..."Hold back ,now ,..Just light clapping.Who knows ,he might be keeping the best til last.
Do you remember the song "it's hard to be humble"?.It is you know.
Any rate,I thought he talked alot to the audience.
