Had a coworker who flew PAL from St Johns to Halifax. On the way to the airport he witnessed a car crash into a moose. The occupants had minor injuries. (the huge moose not so lucky) He had to help and wait for the ambulance to arrive and so was going to miss the flight. The passengers were notified and decided to Wait. He got on the plane to cheers from the other passengers.. He was pretty shaken up from the experience so that act of kindness has stayed with him to this day
An ATC recording (elsewhere) reveals that there were no malfunctions prior to landing. The pilots declared a Mayday only after a normal touchdown and gear strut failure. There were flames visible for a short time - I believe these were from the damaged engine when the prop hits the ground and "torching" is visible - but it is all contained within the exhaust system and stops once the engine is shutdown. (I.e. the airplane did not "catch fire."). Thankfully, no serious injuries.
Most can be avoided if properly maintained and not landing too hard. SAS were caught by the regulator making 2300 flights where safety equipment was not up to standard when they removed the type unnecessarily all because they didn’t listen to the instructions Bombardier left
a cbc news report earlier this evening (Atlantic time) stated that debris was discovered on the runway at saint johns. it is being investigated to determine if it is related to this incident.
Just wanted to say…”Thank You”! You and your report regarding this incident are the 1st that I have heard who actually got all of the correct information and presented it so most people have no issues with clearly understanding what’s going on. The stupid a$& Canadian Media have never once said that it was actually a “Pal Airlines” plane that was involved and have never once said that they were flying the route on behalf of Air Canada. They have only and always reported that it was an AC plane that was involved with the incident in Halifax. It’s a shame how BAD media reporting has gotten these days.
Not the first time there has been a landing gear collapse on a Dash 8 Q400...but I thought they fixed this problem years ago. I live in western Canada and have not flown with PAL in Canada, but I have flown on the Q400's with Horizon in the past...maybe I flew on this plane once.
Just flew Q400 into Halifax a couple of weeks ago from Ottawa and back, with PAL. Good flight but the aircraft seem a little old, which doesn't surprise me due to number of cycles which this type of AC.
For all you people who are horrified at the idea that aeroplanes (of which many tens of thousands fly safely every day) occasionally have mishaps, or ‘crash’ as you like to say - welcome to the world of risk. It is spectacularly low but the fact that there have been some entirely unrelated events has not increased that risk to occupants of aeroplanes at all. That’s just the psychological effect coverage is having on you.
The wheel was found on the runway in St John's a flight from Toronto could not exit the runway as the wheel was blocking it. Lucky it nvr affected the landing of that flight.
@@Syritis my brother works at the airport a flight from Toronto found the wheel on the runway here in St John's and could not exit the runway due to the wheel being in the way. The incident happened in Halifax where yes they closed the airport. But the wheel came off upon takeoff.
I flew PAL Dash 8 for the first time from Halifax to Ottawa for business a couple weeks ago (not booked by me) and while the flight itself was fine, I was a bit shocked at how shabby the interior was. However, our flight back the next day was with Porter (Dash 8) and I took pictures of the wing/prop area from my seat as there was a corner section of the skin that was peeled back and looked like the rivet was missing. There were a couple of other damaged areas that were questionable too and I wondered how well these planes are inspected and why wouldn't they fix something like that? If you can see these things on the outside, what is going on with the parts you cannot see?!!
Add the A220 problems to the ever growing list of carriers experiencing sadness, with the crew member of the Swiss flight sadly passing after smoke entered the cabin following another Pratt engine failure..
I now live in Newfoundland and many flights in and out of the province are Dash 8 flights. Air Canada used to fly in but fairly recently struck deal with PAL to cover all the NL flights. I think PAL have always had that tired look versus Air Canada aircraft. Notably, All PAL aircraft are not using the ADS-B equipment and cannot be tracked fully on Flightradar24. Probably a cost thing for them? I personally do not enjoy flying in the Dash 8 because they rattle and are incredibly noisy in the cabin and seem very precarious if the weather is rough. I wish the airlines would opt for the far more comfortable commuter jets we see Porter or Air Canada using elsewhere. I once tracked a Dash 8 flight over St. John's while my son's flight from Toronto landed easily on a windy day. The Dash 8, full of pax from Halifax, circled for about 15 minutes and then flew back to Halifax; unable to land in the windy conditions. The weather in NL dictates them using an aircraft type that can handle unfavourable and/or windy conditions.
0:28 Actually Philippine Airlines has been referred to it's ICAO code by aviation enthusiasts in the Philippines most of the time as well as PAL Express (The regional subsidiary of Philippine Airlines to where it's name have been derived from which is the Parent company's ICAO code). PAL in PAL Airlines means Provincial Airlines
The airplane didn’t actually catch fire. When the propeller is destroying itself against the ground a lot of it’s debris gets sucked into the engine causing the flaring from the exhaust.
On approach when the landing gear is lowered it must have shown 3 green lights indicating landing gear down & locked ofherwise the crew would have notified ATC of the problem..... possible hard landing on that landing gear causing it to collapse..

Agreed.

This is a common problem with Dash 8s.
They are pretty old at this point

My daughter flew that route on the same airline the following day. Glad I didn’t know about this 7ntil after she arrived! 😅
Well done to the crew and emergency teams.
Fly with them every month Boston-Halifax. Up to now biggest gripe is that they are not TSA approved so no TSA pre available from Boston

The Q400 has a known landing gear collapse issue if not meticulously maintained.
"suspected landing gear issue"
You don't say?
"possible surrender to gravity".
at least everyone is OK
now watch the daily mail journalists say 'it was a Boeing dash 8-400'
Flew with this airline in July from Montreal to Blanc Sablon,

I was on that plane just 2 months ago! Crazy 😵
Still...any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. (I probably flew on this craft when it flew under Horizon Air.)
Wasnt the Dash8-400 notorious for landing gear failures

Missing wheel, apparently. Night landing, so no one would have immediately noticed it.

Shit's not looking good for aviation lately.
busy time of year, more flights = more incidence

No doubt this is Boeing's fault too.

Everything is normal
they might suicide you for speaking too loudly
Is it just me or is plane crashes becoming more common now?
Just you and chicken little.
No just more coverage and more people talking about it on social media. Data shows a decline.
Ever since the door plug incident, aircraft accident or incident *reporting* has increased
media is just reporting now since boeing has been making headlines, but mostly its just a busy time of year.
also now that you watched a video about airplane incident, the algorithm will fill you feed with them so it seems like theres more.
